Thanks, all, for the replies. Anyone else, I'd love to hear your thoughts. If the bag is for resale, I like #2. I'd have to get a cobbler involved. If the bag is for me, I like #3 or 4, which I think I could do. I'm not into wearing backpacks, myself. But I do love how cute the bag is. I think the easiest thing is to remove the buckle part that's coming undone and leave the rest as is. But I have this vision of straps with leather tea roses...

Has anyone used “recoloring balms” on their bags? If so, what did you use to seal it? - so it doesn’t rub off. That’s the only thing I’m unsure about with those items. Loads of reviews from people who’ve used it on their leather couches, but not much on what to do so it doesn’t rubs off. Mink oil has been suggested in a few reviews and Q&A’s on Amazon. Idk, would Resolene be better?

I’m just curious how your experience went with these.

I used furniture clinic on the scuffed piping of my court bag. The color was gray (Coach called it stone, IIRC). I didn’t really seal it, but did do some Black Rocks. So far, I’ve not noticed color transfer. The areas treated were not huge, but the are high contact (corner piping).

Has anyone completely painted a faded vintage Coach item with leather paint? Then used leather sealer over the paint? Can it be removed?
I found an online listing that the seller has done that to, so I have no idea what product line was used. Would the shine be from the paint and/or sealer, or maybe just the photo shots?

the shine could be from the paint. I've noticed that most leather paints are too shiny to look natural.

I assume it would depend on what was used. Even if it could be removed, there might still be some color residue and you might still have to color it. Most products can be removed with acetone but it is a long and tedious process. I would dunk first as some colorants might come off, at least partially, in warm water.

It's a coin purse, so dunking would be out of the question and maybe any kind of paint/sealer removable as well. The seller provided a before photo, which I agree, it was faded. But an application of leather paint??? Leather CPR may have been a better option for solving at least some fading etc. But as we all know, red can be a difficult color to restore depending on the leather and the items past history. The shiny finish just looks very unnatural and unappealing.
Both photos are from the seller.

It looks horrible! What a shame! I think it could still be dunked. Is it lined?

I agree - horrible and a shame! And asking $125. which was much more than I'd pay. Seller could have potentially gotten a nice price for a hard to find item, even in it's original condition, but now after being painted......?? Possibility someone will get it and be disappointed even though the paint and sealer was disclosed.
I was curious about the shine and reached out to the seller. It's leather lined.

⬆️ this 💯

I’ve been working with a Stewardess that was covered in shoe polish. The same rules apply to paint as well. I dunked it in hot water, and it helped loosen a lot of the shoe polish, and I scrubbed it with a nylon brush. The polish looks & feels very gummy when coming off. Once the bag dried, I used pure acetone (Klean Strip) & 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove the rest of polish. It’s a long process, and do it outside or in a well ventilated room.

Here’s a pic mid-way through the polish removal. See all the tiny little black specks on top of the bag, that’s the shoe polish.

I want to include this as well for reference. The inside of the bag didn’t have shoe polish. Here’s a comparison to know what to look for if you think a bag was painted/shoe polish.

The Office No GIF

Thank you for the reference photos of the shoe polish. I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry at the painted Florentine so I laughed. UGH!

I have not used these products. Lordy there is so much out there! I have used Saphir (brand) Juvacuir recolorant in black. All over a Plaza that had universal fading. Iirc I then used BlackRock on it, probably after 24 or 48 hours. No issues with transfer. I did the same for a Pocket bag, but don’t know if I ever used that bag! Touched up another bag with the same product that was a match for BT and no issues either.
I know I have since used some CPR on the Plaza for periodic conditioning.

Great information. I’m definitely bookmarking this for future reference.

That was back in 2017! I discovered those products after seeing older posts on them. They weren’t cheap, factoring in shipping but they didn’t break the bank. And am pleased with the Plaza. It was in great shape but the overall fading just nagged at me. It did the job and I was completely satisfied. I use it regularly and the application has lasted.
Man I sound like they are sponsoring me!!!
