Next bag in the rehab lineup. Burgundy skinny tote with kisslock pocket. I think it's a 9546. Suds, vinegar rinse, and drying.
You know how you apply leather CPR and then wipe off the excess? Well there is no excess! Two applications of CPR so far and there's nothing to wipe, it's instantly absorbed. This bag needs serious conditioning.

Yes! I have always been fascinated with how a kisslock purse got incorporated into bag designs. Was the bag psrticularly stained in addition to being dry? Can’t wait to see how the burg turns out.

I have a question please. It's not exactly a rehab and rescue Q but I'm not sure where else to ask this.

I understand that the regular conditioning of a vintage Coach bag is a good thing....every 6 months or so I believe. Is there a suggestion or recommendation as to removing 'everyday' accumulated surface dirt before the routine conditioning? Is a full cleaning such as Fiebing's saddle soap necessary? Or is something like a damp microfiber cloth enough, actually better?

Thanks very much!

Personally I wouldn't use saddle soap. Unless a bag is super dirty or stained, the conditioners usually clean too. You could clean with the conditioner, wipe it all off, then put on a new layer on the clean surface. I would be afraid to use water as it might cause water stains if not applied evenly.
Typically I do like to give a vintage bag (and some non-vintage) that I have been using more a wipe down with my go-to cleaning solution which is a few squirts of Lexol leather cleaner in about a quart of warm water. I don’t saturate the bag, just give the surface an even wipe down. Then I let it dry, which is less than 15 minutes and condition. I feel that maybe the dampness allows the conditioner to penetrate more.
That being said, whateve makes a good point about water staining so use your judgement!!!
I do this regularly on bags that I have rehabbed so they are well conditioned. I often buy bags in rough or heavily used condition, with a few usually minor flaws that don’t improve so anything minor that happens is not a big deal.
I did buy a saddle color Boat Tote that had miraculously been stored, essentially unused in a climate controlled closet and I have not wiped it down or conditioned it. It still has that new bag texture! I should build it an altar!
I do recall wiping down the inside and outside of a barely used Oliver and Bancroft in BT when I first got them. They did fine. I find that a new to me bag is the one that may have surprises; if I have aleady dunked it, not so much.

I neglected to take the before pics...and the ebay listing is long gone. VERY stained. I got the bag on the cheap ($89) in November of 2022. Been sitting and waiting for some attention since then. Also, one strap edge where it attaches to the bag is ripping. Got to dig out the leather cement! Structurally, this bag is in really good shape. Much better than the tan skinny tote I worked on awhile back, that bag is still a mess, cracking all over. This bag the dye is staining my hands when I rub on the CPR--so I believe the color is moving around and will even out. So far, I've put on about 4 applications of Leather CPR.

I thought this was style that seemed to have a problem cracking!

Thank you! Love learning that you use a very dilute Lexol leather cleaner solution to do your wipe down!

Sharing another rehab. I'm super happy with how this one turned out. Got this bag on shopgoodwill, it was vying for the filthiest bag on the planet. Sharing a few before photos. (Probably why no one else bid, and I got it for $12.99.) The studs were scratched, chipped, silver color showing through the black. Lots of fading and scuffs on the leather to the point I wasn't sure of the color. It's black now!

Process:
Dunked and scrubbed the lining hard with a pot scrubber in the soap. (Didn't do much.)
Scrubbed and de-gummed the bottom of the bag, used scotch tape to remove all residue.
Re-dyed with black dye.
Used heavy duty foam upholstery cleaner on the interior and scrubbed with a toothbrush and washcloth. I actually turned the whole bag inside out to work on it.
Fingernail polish enamel (black) on the studs. LOOKS GREAT!!
Leather CPR.

I love this bag. Interior stains/marks did not come completely clean...I hate to speculate about what was in there, but I'm happy with it now. It smells fresh, anyway. Bottom mark was gum of some sort, came off pretty easily. Here are some photos.

Wow! That gross interior would have scared me away. Using nail polish on the studs is genius.
