Hi everyone! I have my eye on a Quincey bag that has quite a bit of damage to it, but I’m wondering if it’s worth the $67 price tag to try and fix it despite being a novice vintage Coach collector. Attached are the photos of the bag. It looks like there are a few places that have had chunks of the leather trim taken out - possibly by a pet. Thanks in advance for any insight or advice!

It's a beautiful bag but that's a lot of damage. I would probably take it to a leather repair professional to try and replace the damaged areas and that could get expensive. I wouldn't try to repair it unless I got it really cheap, but others may have different suggestions.

I think that's kind of pricey for the amount of damage present. I'd keep looking for a reasonable quincey bag in better condition! Here's a nice one in red for not much more. https://www.ebay.com/itm/126291877105 Here's one in black: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235120648627 ETA: Tip! When you're looking for this bag, check both spellings, "quincy" and "quincey."

I would also pass on that.

Has anyone ever had edging like that replaced professionally? I have a red bucket bag with a chunk gone from the edge that could do with it. I just have no idea what that would cost or where I would have it done.

Thank you (and everyone!) for your helpful replies on this! And thank you for sending over other listings, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for another bag - appreciate the help!

About 10 years ago I picked up a mahagony Patricia's Legacy 9951 bag for only $4.50 at the thrift store, but it was badly damaged, including a tear that involved the edging. For that price I decided to try and get it fixed. I took it to a professional shoe repair (leather repair) shop and discussed the issues with the cobbler. I liked his suggestions and so I turned the bag over to him and he only charged $28 and the repairs came out great. You can see pictures of both the damage and his repairs (before rehab) at the link below. I don't know how expensive these repairs would be now.

This was the same cobbler that had previously repaired my badly damaged Cashin Small Shopper so I trusted him, but I have heard a few horror stories about rehabbers that have had bad experiences with leather repair shops. I suggest first taking the bag to a few different shops and discussing the damage and the repair options with the cobblers; then making a decision to hand it over to a professional, but that's a lot easier to do when you didn't spend much for the bag!

Hi again everyone! I found a listing for a Willis bag for about $47 but it does have cat scratches on it as well as worn out edges on the bottom of the bag. Does anyone have experience with trying to repair that or any advice on how to tackle it? Attached are photos from the listing and thanks so much everyone for your help!

Haven't had that type of repair done professionally, but I did have a heavy metal zipper replaced on a Coach bag about 3-4 years by a shoe repair (cobbler) shop. The guy did a nice job and I knew his price before I left it for repair. But I thought I was a bit pricey for $40. He also made (using a like strap as a pattern) a wrist strap that was missing for the same bag. Another $25 for the strap, so $65 total.
Note to self - be sure the bag is for yourself, or consider that the repair price might be harder to recoup if the bag is for resale.

Those cat scratches and edging issues may be very difficult to fix, and I know that the strap is a replacement but it may not even be a genuine coach strap (it might not even be leather?) I would give this one a pass.

Thank you! Appreciate your insight on this, I had a feeling this might be too big a project to take on as a beginner to collecting vintage coach bags. The most I’ve done for my bags so far is just cleaning and conditioning so a project like this is definitely something I gotta work up to!

I've repaired a cat scratched bag. The thing that worked the best for me was taking teeny tiny amounts of leather cement on a toothpick and gluing down the bits that are sticking up. It is very tedious and you have to try not to leave any leather cement on the surface. After it dried, I took very fine steel wool and went over the surface to smooth it out.

I also tried using leather filler on the deeper scratches, but I think I ended up wiping it all off because I didn't like how it looked. That bag was a labor of love. I don't think I'd pay $47 for that bag. But I was a relatively new rehabber when I worked on my cat scratch bag. It's just tedious work but not too terribly difficult.

However, I do not like repairing piping, so if you aren't ready for that, probably a good idea to pass on that bag for now.

Once I repaired a bag with donated edging from another bag. It's not that hard to do but it would be tricky if you had to go around corners. It is hard pushing a needle through the layers of leather. A repair shop would have the right equipment to do it easily.

Hi all! I’m still stuck on getting my first Willis bag and found one for $65 in great condition but it is missing the strap and the hardware for where the strap is supposed to connect to the bag. Is it difficult to find those two pieces? I know that I can purchase a strap directly from Coach. Attached are pics of the bag, and thanks in advance!

Here's one with all the hardware and the strap and it's only $7 more. https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-Coach-Wills-crossbody-bag-9927-6598752bfb73043163f7e671 I'm not an authenticator, but I did read here that X is a legitimate plant code for Dominican Republic Coach factory.
