Did you paint the little flowers and leaves on it? That's cute! I think about doing stuff like that, especially to bags with discoloration or stains, but then I'm too scared I'll just completely ruin it.
Hi! I bought it already decorated... I took a poll here on keeping her decorated or a new, more dignified look. And Abbie has a date with Mr. Kiwi shortly. I'm dying it black.

I heard that mink oil wasn't that great to use....something about going off if the bag got too much son or heat or something
Just asking if anyone else heard that?,
Sorry to be so vague
I’ve heard something like that too. Does mink oil have silicone in it? I have dunked things with mink oil on them and there is sliminess on them so that leads me to believe there are silicones in it.

I have used Preservation Solutions products and they have worked well for me. CPR is still best for dunking but for rehydrating very dry leather the Preservation Solutions has worked for me. I used it on a leather jacked that was stiff and dry and it restored softness and pliability to the leather. It can’t fix cracks though.

Thanks. Did you use the Leather Saver or the Leather Rejuvenator or the Leather Conditioner on the jacket? Or a combination?

Speaking of dying bags, has anyone ever used this stuff? Seems interesting, but there are no instructions on how to use it on their website, so I don't really want to spend that much unless I know what I'll be getting into.

This bag and I have been through some stuff. My first rehab that was more than a dunk and condition. Had no idea where to start but thanks to all of you I pushed up my sleeves and jumped in. The mystery stains / discoloration on the front were even worse than they show in the photos. My question to all who will answer is, is this as good as the bag will get? Should I do more to it? And if so, what? Thanks so much!

I've used mink oil. I've never had a problem with it. It isn't actually made from mink anymore. It is similar to Obenauf's LP. I've heard you shouldn't use any food type oils, like olive oil or coconut oil because they can go rancid.

Hello everyone, today I have an original RFD mailbox bag that needs quite a bit of attention but I am too scared to dunk it because Debi Barros described how some really old NYC Coach bags disintegrated or cracked on her when she soaked them, and this an old, old pre-creed bag with a Coach metal tag. It is one of my special unicorns, which is misshapen and looks thirsty and dry. Any and all advice would be welcome. I have been advised to use mink oil as well as conditioner. Maybe if I condition it enough it would get to the point where it would be safe to dunk.....?

It's beautiful! Some people on the forum have had bags disintegrate in the bath. I wonder if you could tell beforehand, as it would seem they would appear extremely dry and brittle. All my metal tag bags are in great condition. I can't remember if I dunked any of them.

I feel you on this bag, it reminds me of my BT large Plaza. Regarding the City I have a quirky theory of my own, from looking at lots of listings and using my City that one will often naturally rest the hand on the top flap area while carrying, creating a subtle discoloration from hand oils. Also a bit of discoloration around the turn lock. I have this on my Plaza. I also have this random stain on my Plaza below the turn lock similar to yours!
Overall my City was way more distressed than my Plaza. When I conditioned the daylights out of my City, it came out with a distressed to perfection patina that appeals to me. I have not been satisfied with my Plaza and am on a pause with further work.
I will dunk the Plaza again. I have seen recommendations in another group on using an enzyme stain remover on bags in a dunk as well as pinching the leather and rolling it between your fingers while dunking to help lift out stains. And it could stand reshaping. I was not diligent with that when I dried it and it’s lurch-y.
BT and lighter neutrals imo are always a crap shoot. I have just been extremely lucky
Other opinions are welcome.

I had similar staining issues on my BT City bag…in the end I had tea Roses put on it to help distract the eye from the stains….You rehab looks really good “as is” to me, though.

Wow you did a great job! It looked like the discoloration was probably where the bag was handled repeatedly and dirt and skin oils got ground in. You did very well getting most of it off, and the rest I would chalk up to patina and enjoy your beautiful bag!

EDIT- lol that’s what I get for commenting before reading the rest of the comments. I echo what the others said :)

I agree it looks good. I love the tea rose idea. :) Gauge how you feel about the bag. If the coloration is bothering you, there's always the handy dandy bottles of dye. That's my go to if a bag is hopeless. Yours is far from that.

I only wished my rehab pile looked this good!
Wow - Vintage Coach Prices have doubled or more, in about 1.5 years - that is my estimate anyway.
I looked at bidding on this auction of 8 bags - it contains a willis and a few basic bags and others - all desirable for sure - the red basic is a unicorn but all told, this sold for approx $54 each bag ($405 sale price + $25 shipping).
When I first moved to SF in 2018 I would see basic bags in Goodwill for $10 and occasionally, pass. on. them. I saw a mustard basic bag once for $10 and passed, thinking it was too beat up.

Right before Covid, SF Bay Area Goodwills went HAM and now price most Coach at $30 and sometimes even more. They put most of them behind the case.
