Here's all 3 of the stone bags nearly done. The NY Basic still needs the brass polished and the strap thingies covered in new leather. I'm going to try to tackle that today and tomorrow. As much as I love restoring leather I equally detest restoring brass when it's got that coating on it.

Interesting how they're all slightly different tones. I love love love the color of the Beckett Zip. It looks like mushroom color, but I suppose stone sounds better. I don't usually do hobo bags, but this one's a keeper. I love the way the strap attaches and that I can wear it crossbody.

I am admiring your work not these light color bags, especially the basic bag because it is so old. What color is that basic would you say? Bone?
I have a Bone swinger and it looks like S-. There are scratches and marks but the real problem is the uneven color after all these years. I suppose some sort of dye is in order but I hate to resort to that.

I feel you on this bag, it reminds me of my BT large Plaza. Regarding the City I have a quirky theory of my own, from looking at lots of listings and using my City that one will often naturally rest the hand on the top flap area while carrying, creating a subtle discoloration from hand oils. Also a bit of discoloration around the turn lock. I have this on my Plaza. I also have this random stain on my Plaza below the turn lock similar to yours!
Overall my City was way more distressed than my Plaza. When I conditioned the daylights out of my City, it came out with a distressed to perfection patina that appeals to me. I have not been satisfied with my Plaza and am on a pause with further work.
I will dunk the Plaza again. I have seen recommendations in another group on using an enzyme stain remover on bags in a dunk as well as pinching the leather and rolling it between your fingers while dunking to help lift out stains. And it could stand reshaping. I was not diligent with that when I dried it and it’s lurch-y.
BT and lighter neutrals imo are always a crap shoot. I have just been extremely lucky
Other opinions are welcome.
Thank you for sharing and making me feel like it’s not just me . I think you are absolutely right about these bags discoloring where they are most touched, etc. My favorite thing about anything vintage is it has a story, you can see that it’s had a life, been used and loved. I got this bag for a low price at a thrift store so I felt / feel like I don’t have anything to loose. As a result, I’ve done some things I’m not proud of (and to embarrassed to admit) to try to fade the stains and pull out as much of the overall color as possible. Now, pretty much every time I walk past it, I apply more conditioner and / or recoloring balm. It seems to keep getting better and better or I could just be imagining things . I’m resisting the urge to dunk a third time. I probably should stash it away and leave it be for a while. I suspect ultimately it will always have a patina to it and isn’t that what makes these bags beautiful?

I had similar staining issues on my BT City bag…in the end I had tea Roses put on it to help distract the eye from the stains….You rehab looks really good “as is” to me, though.
Thank you! I love the idea of adding some camouflage to distract the eye. Right now it might be the best thing for me and this bag is for me to give it the “it’s not you, it’s me” speech and take a break.

It's beautiful! Some people on the forum have had bags disintegrate in the bath. I wonder if you could tell beforehand, as it would seem they would appear extremely dry and brittle. All my metal tag bags are in great condition. I can't remember if I dunked any of them.
I wont take the chance on dunking it - it's just too risky! I am looking into @pammbw's suggestion of Preservation Solutions products. For the moment I have used Leather World Technologies Hydrating Cream, which I had on hand, followed by CPR. it looks and feels a lot better but I would like to do more.

I'm pretty sure the color is stone. Bone is white on the interior. The Basic's color is not very even, and it didn't clean up as well as I'd hoped. It's the best I could do without damaging the leather though. Even as much as I did left the leather so very dry. I had to put on numerous cotes of CPR and even a couple cotes of Blackrocks after I washed it. I'm not super happy with it, but I think after I finish some modifications, I won't be so bothered by the distressed look, I hope.

Yes to patina and yes, time is often our friend in rehabbing!

Wow - Vintage Coach Prices have doubled or more, in about 1.5 years - that is my estimate anyway.
I looked at bidding on this auction of 8 bags - it contains a willis and a few basic bags and others - all desirable for sure - the red basic is a unicorn but all told, this sold for approx $54 each bag ($405 sale price + $25 shipping).
When I first moved to SF in 2018 I would see basic bags in Goodwill for $10 and occasionally, pass. on. them. I saw a mustard basic bag once for $10 and passed, thinking it was too beat up.

Right before Covid, SF Bay Area Goodwills went HAM and now price most Coach at $30 and sometimes even more. They put most of them behind the case.
I've noticed the same thing. It was in May last year I stopped buying bags because I was in grad school. When I started back up about a month ago, I started looking again. Omg, so expensive! Even for bags that are in terrible condition. I have a stockpile to start hammering away on, which is good, because I can't afford the jacked up prices.

The strap is mostly done, just need another application of CPR, then BlackRock. I am glad with the result, now I can wear the large Courier crossbody.
ETA: add 2 photos ( attached at the different holes )

Quote my own post to share how I made this strap. I recently posted it on instagram.( I am still just learning about how to use instagram).
Also made a red strap for the Rambler, and a burgundy one for the Shoulder bag.

I've been meaning to post this rehab (which I did in summer)—this is my second one.

I found the purse for $12.00 at a thrift store I regularly go to every weekend. I almost didn't get it because someone was holding onto it: I was watching them handling it while talking to someone on the phone and the moment they put it down, I snatched it.

I believe it's the pocket purse based on the dimensions.

At the top, the pocket purse; at the bottom, the City bag, my first rehab.

The flap was a little stiff, there were some white marks on the back and I could spot some verdigris. Lots of surface scratches but nothing that scared me. The piping had some wear as well. It was a bit dirty inside.

I removed the hardware and gave the bag a bath. The white marks were removed with a nail polish remover. I first conditioned it with Leather CPR with a cloth at first, but I then went back with a horsehair brush that I bought after thinking I should be more thorough. I forgot how annoying removing the verdigris was (I used a paper clip to scrap everything). I used lemon and baking soda but I recently cleaned it with Bar Keep Friend, it looks much better now. I finished conditioning with Blackrock.

Some before and after pictures.

After a few months of daily use:

The dents on the back are still visible. I may try to flatten it again, but I am unsure how to proceed other than giving it another bath and work on the dents specifically as the leather dries. I don't mind it too much, especially since I use the back pocket a lot for my phone or anything I need accessible a lot.

I really love this bag, I use it almost daily since it's small and versatile. If it gains too many noticeable scratches, I just condition it again and it looks great again!

Hey all,

I have done around four rehabs so far and would like some advice. The weak spot in my rehab game so far (aside from totally ignoring hardware so far) is the reshaping. I put towels inside to reshape, but I would love to hear tips and tricks for reshaping. Like, how to get it so the bottom of the bag doesn't sag??

Thanks!
