I would like to share my very first dunking project
This soft satchel was listed on Mercari Japan.
When it arrived, the color had faded and the inside was covered in mold, and the worst thing was the odor…
I thought about asking for authentication here first, but I just couldn’t stand the odor, and went straight to the sink, dunked it into lukewarm water with some mild detergent that can be used to wash wool and silk (Dawn isn’t available where I live).
Leather CPR is also quite expensive here, so I decided to apply some left over baby lotion that I had used for our kids instead.
… and this is how it turned out!

The color came back just by moisturizing it with the lotion (I may have overdone it a bit ).
There’s still some odor left, and I regret not having added vinegar while dunking.
I’m wondering whether I should dunk it again in vinegar…

Well done!

As whatev mentioned you want to ensure the mould is dead or it will continue to grow. If sunlight isn't sufficient, pour some plain white vinegar directly into the bag and swish it around so that all surfaces are touched, then dunk and soak using soap and at least 2 cups of vinegar. Condition like last time. Let us know how it goes! :flowers:

It looks good! You need to be sure the mold is dead. It might work to put the bag in sunlight.

Thank you so much, @whateve and @LadaZuri, for your insights!!!
I did put it under sunlight for a little while, but was afraid of damaging the leather and brought it inside fairly quickly…
Vinegar will probably help with the odor as well, so I will try spraying the inside with vinegar, dunk it again, and put it under sunlight for a while

I might need a little break before restarting the process, though — it was quite a bit of work for me just to dunk, dry, and condition it, and I truly admire those of you with so many great achievements!!

Lovely bag!

Mold can be persistent, I know that access to products is limited by location but some leather lotions list mold-inhibitors in their formula, you might try looking for something like that in your area; just a suggestion.

Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing a vintage Coach Berkeley drawstring bag in russet, but the one I am looking at looks to have some sort of color transfer. Does this type of color transfer come out with dunking?

If anyone has experience with the Berkeley line, I'd really appreciate your input. Thank you in advance.

I don't think that is color transfer. It is just wear. It might look a little better after a bath and brushing. It might not go away completely.

Baby got it's first bath. Probably the first in 40+ years. Already looking better.
Yay! Thanks for posting!

I agree with whateve. I bought a russet Zip in good condition so I didn’t have to deal with that. Iirc MrsGAM bought one that had a little more wear than mine and hers cleaned up nicely. If you search for her posts on it you can see what she did to rehab it.
Berks are beautiful bags!

I have never rehabbed a Berkeley but I have worked on a few suede bags. I also agree that the dark mark is a sign of wear and it should improve with cleaning but it might not disappear.

Make sure that you have a Suede Brush and perhaps also a Suede Eraser available because they can be very helpful. The fact that the bag is a Rust color is good news because light-colored suede is more difficult to clean.

I've noticed this Apple Brand Suede Cleaner on Amazon but I haven't tried it, but I do use Apple Garde to protect bags and it is a good product:

Apple Brand Suede & Nubuck/Fabric Shoe Cleaner:

I've posted these pics before, but the links below are for an oat suede fringe dinky that was very dirty and distressed but it was much improved (but not perfect) after rehab, I discuss the steps that I used for the rehab so you may find that helpful. Good luck!

Would anyone be able to tell me if wall paint is hard to remove from vintage coach bags? I tried scraping a spot with my nail but it doesn’t budge. TYIA for any replies :

Eta: I didn’t use anything on it yet because the seller never disclosed the paint. I don’t wanna alter it in a way that could void the return if I have to go that route (but Im hoping it won’t come to that).
I'm working on a similar problem right now but mine is much much worse, much more splatter. it's a Legacy slim duffle in a beautiful red. I bought it at the GW outlet for $7. I've already given it a long warm soak and though I could pick some of the spots off with my fingernail there are too many. I also tried scraping at it with a butter knife. That took some but not all of it off. So I tested acetone on the strap and the few spots on that came off but it also took off the red shine. It's still red just not shiny. I don't know if I'm ruining it. I'm quite nervous about it though I've used acetone on many an older bag this one is more modern. If the cat wasn't on my lap right now I'd snap a picture of it.

I have that drawstring Berkeley in black and I love it. It think the mark with lighten but might not disappear. It's amazing suede.
