Hope everyone is having a great holiday! I wanted to share what I've been working on this week since I haven't done a rehab in quite a while. In a last ditch effort to save the black/grey/navy Basic Bag that arrived here moldy and disgusting probably a year ago, I impulse purchased some dye and gave her a total makeover! I have wavered on trying a dye job, so what better to dye than that ugly thing  It wasn't going to be carried in the shape it was in, so eff it, I figured I had nothing to lose. And being me, I went the cheapest route possible! I was getting groceries and saw the Rit dye I'm the Laundry section. I wasn't sure I even wanted to put $5 more dollars(or more time) into that bag. I've read about Rit not being even and drying out the leather, but seriously this bag was THE WORST already, so it was not really possible to ruin it further. Not recommending everyone go out and buy cheap dye that has had questionable results and ruined many a bag...maybe my luck was just a fluke, or maybe this bag was just so damn ugly before that it just seems like it looks great to me lol. Here's a couple of reminders of what it looked like before. You can see just how terrible the fading was. I didn't even know what color it was supposed to be. And ugh the mildew...it was bad.

The outside fading was the worst I've had on any bag. I believe the majority of that was how much time it spent outside and in the window to kill the mold and stink.

And after a 30 minute dip in Rit and vinegar, three coats of CPR, and a coat of Bick 4..My new to me(again) charcoal grey Basic Bag! Still have some buffing to do...

I can't believe this is my moldy, stinky, unknown color and very much hated basic bag! It kind of felt wrong to me to dye an entire bag, especially in cheap dye, but it really was a loss before. She is definitely loved again! Turned out to be a great present to myself. Now if the color doesn't rub off on my clothes and slgs I will finally be at peace with it. If it does rub off then I'm going to burn it because this has been the most difficult bag ever! I have some Fiebing's leather sheen I could finish it with, but I don't think I want to use it. I used it once on a cross grain bag I had to remove some stains from, but that cross grain already feels terrible. I don't want this bag ending up feeling like plastic! Guess I'll wear something I don't care much about and see what happens :shrugs:

That's an astounding result, Lb! LOVE the colour and the evenness of it! You must be so pleased! :hugs:

Thank you :flowers: I am very pleased! I didn't expect to get this result. I was seriously considering tossing it. I have missed having a grey since I gave my aunt 9059. It is a little darker than I wanted to be, but I can't really complain. I'm just happy it is one color!

That came out great! I'm surprised a 30 minute dip would give results that dramatic.

I couldn’t stick to my bag ban (why do I even bother saying it?!) & impulse purchased this Post Pouch! Kindly authenticated by @Hyacinth

I put a lot of work into this bag. I removed all the verdigris, dunked it, CPR’d it, Renapur’d it, polished all the hardware, fixed the strap edging & used contact cement to tighten the stretched out d-ring loops. I don’t know where I found the zap of motivation but I just kept going until it was done!

Wow! That’s beautiful…so inspiring! I have a little rehab pile to address over the holidays…and this result has motivated me to get on with it. I’ve never removed turn lock hardware before, but I’m willing to give it a go for such a fabulous result! Thank you for sharing.

I only began removing the turn lock hardware recently and I just do basic cleaning of the hardware by hand and it looks so much better. I was motivated due to a lot of verdigris around the turn lock on a particular bag and I am so glad I did it.

Thanks for the encouragement @Lake Effect , I’m definitely going to give it a go!

That came out great! I'm surprised a 30 minute dip would give results that dramatic.

The instructions said half a bottle would do a pound of fabric, so I used half, but only used enough water to cover the bag(kitchen sink.) Flipped it and swished it every couple of minutes. I think the ratio of dye to water was the key. Plus, the bag was so thirsty I think it just sucked it all up.

I’ve learned not to skimp on the hardware and give it attention, even if it is minimal.
And make sure if the prongs of the male turn lock (so strange to write that!) are oriented north/south like on my Bella Court, press lower or south prong into place first. Then press the upper or north prong over that. I unconsciously did the opposite. Then reached into it while shopping and caught the littlest bit of the lower/south prong, which was on top, under one of my nails  You better believe I took it out and rearranged the prongs.
Someone here recommended using the curve of a spoon to press prongs into place. Game changer.

Thanks! Im normally very lazy about polishing hardware but this bag really needed it. I get random bursts of motivation to rehab bags. Im currently burnt out from doing the Post Pouch & Dinky tote so Im taking a break. When I force myself to do rehabs I don’t wanna, the results aren’t as good as they could’ve been lol :shrugs:

What a transformation I wonder if you adding vinegar helped color to distribute and seep in better since instructions mention adding salt or vinegar depending on the fabric. Do you know how much vinegar you approximate added?

I used about a cup. That's what it said for fabric, and since I always add vinegar to my dunk water I figured I might as well add it to the dye. As moldy as this bag was more vinegar could never hurt.
