I am about to embark on my first rehab attempt. Navy City Bag with no obvious stains.
After reading through these threads it seems like the basic process is as follows (assuming I don't intend to dye in any way. That's clearly at least intermediate level expertise.
1) Clean and brush out the inside
2) Give her a bath in warm water with dawn and / or vinegar. This can clean and help moisten

3) Dry and reshape using towels.
4) Condition, condition, condition. Most seem to use Leather CPR (thankfully available at my local Tractor Supply).
5) Apply BlackRocks Leather N Rich. Let sit and wipe off.
5) Brush with horse hair brush to shine.

I have several questions, so please bear with me. And thank you in advance.
Did I miss any steps?

When do you use vinegar in the bath ?
Do most people use their hands to apply the Leather CPR? Or are there inexpensive towels or sponges you like?
I found a horse hair brush that is intended for show pigs. What do you think? Or do you have a better suggestion?

Finally I've also seen references to Lexol. What is this used for?

Thanks in advance for your help. I also plan to spend some time on YouTube. If you've found any videos particularly useful or bad, I'd welcome that input too.

One more comment, navy vintage coach bags were often very dark and sometimes after the rehab it's hard to tell them from black.

@emilylia

Lexol makes a cleaner product and a conditioner product. I have found them at Walmart and auto supply stores. I learned about them early on. I use the cleaner instead of Dawn in the dunk, and for general maintenance cleaning. The conditioner is very thin. I used to use it for maintenance. Now I use it for shoes and boots. I use Cadillac Supreme for maintenance conditioning. For both, just my preference.

Hello ,

I recognize some of you from Instagram (you may know me as coach_problem ) and Poshmark so this is the PERFECT place to ask this ... The rehabs y'all do are phenomenal ❤️‼️ ...

I recently aquired a vintage large Swinger from the mid to late 70's and I want to step up my rehab game from just dunk, moisturize, and buff ... The Swinger has a waxy feel to the leather so I'm wondering what I should look for in my rehabbing to address this ... Is there something I can add to the dunk other than Dawn to remove the wax if that's what's on the leather? ... Is there a way to tell if wax has been applied to the leather?

Also, I see a lot of you use Leather CPR ... Why this over Coach Leather Moisturizer? ... And when, if ever,
should one use Leather Honey?

Thank you so much for your time in helping me with my new found, pandemic created passion and sharing your knowledge with me ... I greatly appreciate it .

Welcome! You are off on your dates. The Lightweights collection wasn't made until around 1987. The earliest catalog I see with a swinger in it is 1989. The creed of your bag indicates it was made between 1988-1993.

I think your bag looks wonderful. It is possible the previous owner already rehabbed it and the waxy feeling is from the conditioners used. I would try buffing now to see if that makes a difference.

If you really feel a dunk is necessary and it was previously rehabbed, some of the conditioners will come off in the bath. You can use warmer water to help this happen.

Coach leather moisturizer is a maintenance conditioner, fine for bags that are already in good condition. CPR is a heavy duty conditioner that helps restore the moisture that has been removed in the bath. IMO you need something like CPR if you are going to have a successful dunk. Leather Honey is also heavy duty but it can drastically change the color of the leather and I would only use it in extreme cases; i.e. when the leather is extremely dry and isn't responding to CPR.

The color of your bag is gorgeous. I would be cautious not to do anything that would change it much.

Which maintenance conditioner(s) does everybody use?

Thank you SO much for your reply ... Also, thank you for the heads up on the dates of my bag ... Anything 1994 and on I'm good with ... But it looks like I'll need to find a better website for dating bags prior there to ...

May I ask, is Black Rocks wax? ... I would prefer to not use wax in my rehab process if possible ... If it is a wax, can you polish Vintage Coach using a non wax product or just the horse hair brush?

Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge ... Tracking down, reading, and deciphering everything that is out there can be REALLY overwhelming ‍♀️

I think there is some wax in Blackrocks. You can buff with the brush after using any conditioner. The last rehab I did I just used CPR and it came out beautifully.
