Thank you for your kind words. I’ve enjoyed looking after her but am working hard on letting go vs hoarding

I’ll look forward to seeing your Rambler in due course!

Take care

Shout out and thanks to so many of you here (@Nataluccia3 too) who have been interested in this bag and have kindly inquired along the way. Most of you may recall I found this on Craigslist last November. I had not been particularly interested in an original Rambler, but when I saw this in what I believed to possibly be a spectator style in saddle/BT, it was like *screeching tires* to a full stop. It was $60 plus $21 and change for a priority ship box. I though why not . . .
The up side was the possibilities of that gorgeous looking natural pebbling and that the piping had not worn through on the back and that the seams were all good (in the areas that could be a problem). . . . I had never seen a spectator Rambler. The down side was that when I got it, the leather was in the worst condition I ever had my hands on (between my bags and the ones I have seen at flea markets, thrift shops I would estimate I have had my hands on over a hundred bags, conservatively). Dry and stiff. And reeked of mildew. Verdigris, lots of it. I was a bit discouraged from the start.
Two dunks later, lots of CPR and yes, (newbies, do not use this as your guide to rehab) smearing it, multiple times with Renapur. At least ten apps overall with CPR and as many with Renapur. A cup of bleach in the water with the first dunk (and like I posted originally, please don't roast me on that, the mildew was awful) and a wipe down of the inside of the inside with a Krud Kutter solution before the second dunk, I began to have more hope as the flap, front pocket, sides and back began to feel like Coach leather and the smell of mildew dissipated.
The side of the gusset pocket pocket was damaged from something that must have been carried permanently there, like a huge janitor sized ring of keys, or other item that would rough up the leather from the inside. There is no improving that issue. Also on the front and back, while it did clean up well considering it is a light color, there is some surface discoloring that conditioner will not change, at least not on a light color.
After the second dunk I was beginning to think maybe it was all BT and the extreme wear on the front and back just wore off the color. And it had been left out with the result of extreme fading. However, even though I have no catalog info to support me, I believe it is a spectator style. I am guessing Saddle and BT. In the 4th pic it is clear the inside zip pocket and front of the bag (where the gusset pocket is attached are clearly BT. In the 3rd pic you see the back of those panels is clearly darker in color. Under the flap and the pieces of the gusset attaching to the front are clearly lighter and different from the BT and I would guess Saddle, just from what I have seen from what others post here and online. I did not take a pic of this, but when I lift up the tab on the front, the little are where it is not faded, looks like the nice caramel color of what I am calling Saddle too.

Well, what really helped it along was the last app of Renapur, warming it and the bag after applying and then warming the bag again over the next few days (:flowers: @LadaZuri). The strap is quite sad, although it is lagging in apps of CPR/Renapur. I will give it another app of Renapur. I have decided not to touch up the bag at this time with any dye or recolorant. I was toying with the idea of touching of the piping on the flap. For now, I will see if this is a forever bag for me. It was a really good project, if not one of the most impulsive buys I have ever made. I am contemplating a touch of the piping of the strap with BT recolorant.

If anyone has any catalog pics or insider info on Made in NYC spectator styles, I would appreciate it! Here are listings of what appear to be other NYC spectator styles:
Coach #636-6849 1970's Authentic"Dinky" Bag British Tan Crossbody NYC W/Tag | eBay
Vintage 1970's Coach New York City Stewardess Tan Messenger Crossbody Saddle Bag | eBay

Between the nice looking cleaned hardware, pebbled flap and it's borrowed BT strap, I am enjoying it!

I bought it back in late November and it was a real off-on process. I recently got to a place where I feel satisfied with it, yay!
Good for you on clearing out. That is a message I need to hear. Since I started buying vintage Coach several years ago I let myself go buying whatever I wanted (within a somewhat limited budget). Even a bag a month times 4 and a half years adds up. Stating the obvious.
I too want to avoid hoarding too. I believe I’m up to around 60 bags! I have many small bags so it feels like less. My goal is to see if I can decide to cut that in half by the end of the year.
There is an amazing rust bag up for auction. While part of me would like to go for it, I already have this large rust Saddle that I don’t want to let go off yet, which feels like a good idea if I get the other one. So maybe I’ll keep my Saddle for now and see where I am when the next rusty comes along!

Wow! Can’t wait to see her finally restored to her (best possible) glory....!
And yes, those little indulgences soon add up and, in my case, became a problem...though I am tempted to keep a navy blue Convertible Clutch and a black CR Patricia that I’ve currently got for sale...give me strength!
I’ll look up that rust saddle...just looking of course ha!
Take care

Any link to that rust would be appreciated x

Hi, again!

Last night I finally gave my legacy hippie its bath. Once it was mostly just damp, I gave it a coat of the Leather Therapy. This afternoon when I checked on it, it felt pretty stiff and dry. Is that normal? I just put on another coat of Leather Therapy, and now it's really tacky. From what I read, that means no more coats of that, right?

My game plan from here is to give it a day or two to dry completely, buff it with a horsehair brush, and then add coats of CPR (buffing in between) until it's all soft and moisturized again. Thoughts?

As always, much appreciated!

Hi ladies, has anyone tried to get the free generic hangtags from Coach lately?
I re-applied to an old coach customer service email asking for 11 generic hangtags (and I provided the serial numbers).

This time she referred me to 866-533-3467 Ext. 70020.

When I call their number, there is nowhere obvious to enter an extension. The CS rep I did get told me they are not giving out *any* hangtags due to covid.
Is there a secret to getting hangtags? You all seem to be able to do it.

I still haven’t received mine & there’s been no follow up email. I placed my order in June 2020. I read somewhere on the forum that coach said to try ordering in May 2021.

eta: since it’s May & you’re still not able to order, it’s very unlikely you’ll get them shipped. Maybe you can go into a store & see if they have extras? Also, if Im not mistaken, I believe the limit is 3 tags per year per customer.

Renapur once it’s fully dry. Im waiting to re-try Blackrocks on my grey rambler, but I don’t know about chamberlain’s as I’ve never used it. When the bag is fully dry, the stuff clinging to the leather should come off with no problem. Let me know how it goes
I've put a coat of Renapur on mine too:). I've got BR on the way which I'll try out too!

I mean Chambers, which I think is a local small product, not Chamberlain's.

Good Morning Everyone,

I have been overwhelmed with paralysis in attempting any rehab on this special girl.

However, I have conditioned her with a goodly number of CPR coats and applied a top coat of Renapur (before I imported my Blackrocks). The brass I have given a cursory buff, in-situ, with a jewellers’ cloth.

She is too precious for me to keep in a dustbag in my wardrobe and I don’t have the competence nor the confidence to rehab her further. So with a heavy heart, and following the old adage “if you love someone (thing) let it go”, I’m going to be doing just that.

Beforehand though, I wanted to thank you all for your wisdom, support and encouragement, and have attached a few photos of her current progress.

Take care

Why do you feel bad about the rehab? I think she looks beautiful! I think you just need to take a break and a step back for a minute. Don’t let her fly away too quickly! She’s lovely!!

Oh! 3 per year? OK I will be maxing out for a while.

Are you able to order those online, or do you need to call?
Thanks for the info1

LOL that Rambler is done! At least by me. That is after two dunks and loads of CPR and Renapur. It was a beast.

For my rust Saddle, this is the before pic from the seller. It came our really nice, with some patina and distressing that is fine by me. If you search this thread, I finished it last August, I believe.

You can use the “contact us” form on the website to place the order with the repairs department but since they aren’t giving out tags right now, Id recommend going directly to a coach store near you & asking them for spare tags. Just to be sure they’ll even do it, call in before you go & ask to speak to a manager :)

Both are gorgeous...I continue to be inspired x
