Where is Teton Deb? She has a wealth of knowledge about Coach, I'm sure she will have ideas for you.
This is what it looks like now. It isn't completely dry. On the back of the inside pocket, I had tested out various dyes and you can see that it didn't remove them, but turned some of them green. The lightening is most apparent on the front of the pocket, which wasn't dyed at all. There was a flaw of some kind below the kisslock. It looked like a burn and I had attempted to sand it off, but the flaw went all the way through the leather. The color remover turned it green.
The bag looks much worse now than when I got it. At least I didn't pay that much for it. The bag doesn't have sentimental value. I just don't like to give up. I feel bad that I've ruined it.
Thanks. Where do I find industrial grade acetone? I have nail polish remover and it doesn't do a thing. I'm not sure I can get oil based dye delivered to California.Pretty bag! Looks putty originally? There's only 2 options at this point. .. well 3 . 1 is a total dip dye with an oil based dye. 2 is hand dye with a water based dye and redye the zipper. 3 is to get some industrial grade acetone and scrub all that off then heavy condition.
I loathe dyes so I'd probably try the acetone first. That's what I'm doing on my swag bag. Easiest is the dip dye to maybe a mocha.
I had tried to dye her dark brown originally but it went on so unevenly, which is why I was using the color remover in the first place. I'm more worried about how I'm going to restore the proper texture than the color.
It'd be ok on a tan bag? The brown one?
EdgeKote comes in multiple colors. I'd recommend buying the color closest to your bag. The brown that they sell is a darker brown. I have both it and the black. They make a tan colored one, too. That might work if your bag is lighter. I've used the brown on a couple bags. When you mix with a little conditioner, it seems to blend right in.
Ok. Thanks.Yes, it was the powder.
I think you can find it in Home Depot or Lowes.Thanks. Where do I find industrial grade acetone? I have nail polish remover and it doesn't do a thing. I'm not sure I can get oil based dye delivered to California.
Thanks. Do you think it will work on the sanded leather? It has almost a suede texture. Will the leather refinisher sink in or sit on top?I'd do the lesther refinisher in whatever is the closest to the original color was as possible. I don't think you'll ever get dye to take evenly at this point, and you'd probably have to go darker. Also you would end up with either a different color on the Inside or be at risk of dye getting on your stuff if you dip dye the inside with a dark color.
He sells smaller sample bottles that are more than enough to do a couple thin coats on one bag. The leather remains soft and you can continue to condition after you use it.
I have finished all my easy projects and now just have the difficult ones left. Maybe I'll switch to one of the other lost causes for awhile.Ok. Thanks.
The bag still looks very structurally sound so I'd agree that you should keep trying. If you're tired of it at this point, just put it aside until you're up to it.
Sorry this didn't work out for you this time, whateve.
Thanks. I'll look for it.I think you can find it in Home Depot or Lowes.
Never thought of this! Thanks! Will be adding cornstarch to my list of things to buy.
Btw, I love, love, love your signature! Good for you!

Great! You've convinced me. I'm sorry I told you about sanding. It doesn't work as well as I thought it would.I sanded the spot on this bag before I used it.
