Oh no! I'm so sorry this didn't work for you! I feel so bad now. I wonder what the difference is between what you did and what I did?

You're working on one of the older, all leather bags right?? Geez...this stinks.
Don't feel bad. This was actually the very first bag I bought for rehab and it was more than I could handle. It is a slim tote from the early 80's. I really messed it up way before this. The inside pocket ended up pretty light. It was the only part I hadn't tried to dye. It looks like it didn't remove the dye I had applied but it removed some of the original color. I wonder if I would have had better results with more packages of the dye remover or hotter water. I think at this point, the only thing I can do is use the Leather Refinisher. I think it could fix both the color and the texture of the bag.

Thanks...and you're welcome!

Hey! Was wondering if the black rock doesn't help darken the edges what are my other options? Got the bag today and the seller only showed the one corner in her pics and a lot more of the piping is worn as well as underneath of the bag. I just messaged her to see what her response was. At $30+shipping feel like it was misrepresented.

If it is worn through, then you are going to need more than Blackrocks. If it is just a matter of the color being faded, sometimes I'll use a drop of paint mixed into conditioner. The Blackrocks will work for this too but it's temporary.

Don't do anything until you get it resolved with the seller though.

I've had great luck with EdgeKote. I usually mix it with a little conditioner.

I've been working on my first rehab, a Shelton bag in British Tan. Well, it's the first one I started, I have several in various stages at this point. Anyway, She's had several coats of both Apple and Leather CPR at this point, and has been sitting for a week or so. The leather is very easily scratched though, The blue arrow shows where I lightly brushed with my nail, and it doesn't rub away easily. Should I continue with the conditioner? I wasn't waiting very long between coats at first, maybe that was my error. Any tips will be appreciated. I want to carry this bag soon.

Welcome! Beautiful bag...I would continue conditioning, letting it rest 12 hrs or so between applications. How old is this bag? Unfortunately with "pre-loved" bags, we have no way of knowing what their previous owner did - or did not do - to them as far as upkeep. We may not know where they lived either...or how they were stored. I'd bet lots of ladies don't even begin to know what they can - and should - do to take care of a leather bag. I sure didn't until I found tpf :)

Thanks Aggie! It doesn't rub away. I think I'll try some additional conditioner. I need to work on the edges of the piping anyway. I'm just afraid to over condition. As long as it's drinking it in evenly, it's okay I guess?

I don't know that you can "over condition"...I would continue, especially the piping.

I have some Blackrock's that I'd planned to use as a final coat before buffing. I'll pick up a brush too, and see if that helps.
Thanks for the quick reply!

I also use Blackrocks as a final treatment, usually 2 coats with 12 hrs. at least in between...AFTER I'm satisfied I've conditioned enough. About a year ago I rehabbed an 80's Courier Pouch that got 4 intense rounds of Leather CPR before Blackrocks.

Yes, it probably needs more conditioner. I usually use Blackrocks at the end. Some people think it changes the color, but I think it restores the color. Once I thought I had put too much on, but the bag eventually absorbed it.

I agree...with the conditioner. To me, Blackrocks "deepens" rather than darkens color...makes the leather glow!

Amen!

Well, I do feel bad. I'm sure this bag is important to you for you to have held onto it for so long.

This is strange because when I used the removed I only used half a package and yes, the water was very hot. Like I said, it didn't remove all the color but it was MUCH lighter. I let it sit for about half an hour or so.

When I redyed my bag, I wet it first. I'm not sure why. It just seemed like a good idea to have it wet since I was putting a liquid on it. I put some water into my bucket and left the bag in there for a bit to soak. I put some dye into a small spray bottle I bought from the dollar store and added some water to it. Not sure why about this either but that's what I did. About half dye and half water. After the bag was completely wet I lifted it out of the water and started spraying the dye all over it. Everywhere and anywhere. As it was drying, I noticed that there was some streaking and spots that I missed. I left it for a couple of days to work on other things, then I just rewet it again and sprayed dye on those areas. It came out great. I would have done it a third time if I had to, but the second time was the charm.

Can you post of pictures of your bag, whateve?

Sorry should've clarified but that was a before pic, and before the bag bath, it was very, very dry.

I am happy to confirm that CORNSTARCH works on oil stains!! At least for me it did! The leather CPR I dumped onto it without spreading properly left a oily stain but after rubbing cornstarch in, and then moisturizing with more leather cpr 12 hours later, voila! The stain is gone! I also did this to little marks/spots that remained after the bag bath and the cornstarch removed some of them (I guess these were oily spots?). I might give it a second bag bath since I missed a mark during it's first bath on the front, and it's bugging me.. But maybe I should just leave it and enjoy it! Pics to come!

I have an obviously lighter faded spot where I rubbed too hard.. Aside from conditioner and dye, would anything help it?
Never thought of this! Thanks! Will be adding cornstarch to my list of things to buy.

Btw, I love, love, love your signature! Good for you!

This is what it looks like now. It isn't completely dry. On the back of the inside pocket, I had tested out various dyes and you can see that it didn't remove them, but turned some of them green. The lightening is most apparent on the front of the pocket, which wasn't dyed at all. There was a flaw of some kind below the kisslock. It looked like a burn and I had attempted to sand it off, but the flaw went all the way through the leather. The color remover turned it green.

The bag looks much worse now than when I got it. At least I didn't pay that much for it. The bag doesn't have sentimental value. I just don't like to give up. I feel bad that I've ruined it.

I understand. I'd feel bad too since it's a gorgeous bag. Not in it's present condition, obviously.

Did you use the Rit Color Remover powder? I'm asking to try and narrow down what the difference is between what you did and what I did.

Thanks Joodlz. I love this bag. It was my first eBay purchase after I found TPF. She has the xxx-xxxx style serial number, so we've narrowed the age to 1989-1993. The bag was smashed flat from storage, and pretty dry, so probably had never had any type of conditioning. I'll continue with the Leather CPR with plenty of time between applications. I hope to carry her soon.

The seller said that she would refund $7, is this sufficient? Feel like there are just so many more spots than represented and I've never dealt with this before.

I wouldn't give up on her, you can always dye dark brown and she will be fine. :smile1:

I had tried to dye her dark brown originally but it went on so unevenly, which is why I was using the color remover in the first place. I'm more worried about how I'm going to restore the proper texture than the color.
