I usually stuff and shape it for a several hours and then remove the towels and pull the lining out; but everybody has their own method.
Good to know! Thanks. As long as it’s someone’s tested method, I’m all about trying it. I set the spin cycle to high so it was just a bit damp when I took it out of the wash. I think it looks cleaner? I guess it’ll be a morning surprise ;)

I would rub the surface of the bag with laundry soap, like Woolite, and then scrub it all over with a soft brush - like a nail brush. They I would put it inside a laundry bag or a pillowcase and run it through the washer with more Woolite, good luck!

Yes I would throw it in the washing machine.

Good morning, ladies! It is MUCH cleaner! It’s a bit stiff, though. I brushed it out and it got somewhat softer but not by much. Do you think it was the Dreft compared to Woolite or is this just what I can expect now that it’s been cleaned and dried?

also, I like the hangtags as well. I don’t really notice when they’re missing but I like the idea of complimentary accessories, like when I buy my toddler clothes with a matching hair tie :flowers:

New question

I’m cleaning and building up my collection because we’re in the states for a short period of time. We’re from Hong Kong and I haven’t had access to good vintage bags for 5+ years now. My bags were shipped from HK and arrived last week - they had been packed by the moving company and very poorly handled, just thrown at the bottom of huge boxes, not wrapped or stuffed or anything. Everything is filthy and moldy after 4+ months in transit. We’re going back soon and I’m trying to pack things for the move. Cleaning them, stuffing them, bought muslin organic cotton non-dyed cloth bags, and I’ll put them in plastic bins for transit with silicone packets to absorb moisture. Do you have any other recommendations for packing them? I’m so afraid my leather goods will be destroyed when I see them again. With Covid, there’s no telling how long they’ll be in transit.

thank you again! You all have been such a wealth of information. I’ve scoured through so many older posts to learn how to restore my bags and other leather goods. I’m taking all of my cleaning products with me this time so I can rehabilitate somewhat when we arrive, but it would be a shame if they didn’t arrive in good shape.

Hello Coach Rehab Experts!

I will be polling the audience for advice in the coming days - so my first question revolves around wallets....

I read mixed reviews that sometimes dunking causes wrinkles and they don't revert back to their wonderful shapes. I have two to rehab - the black looks cleaner (may just be hiding behind the color) and the honey-colored wallet (that is all sorts of dirty)

WWYD?

I just bought a cute little mahogany Murphy for my first rehab! I'm excited but nervous! I wanted to attach a before photo but for some reason I can't. I'm not the most technologically advanced person. My biggest question about this bag is whether I would need to put something in the bottom once it has been rehabbed to keep it straight. It is super flat right now and I wonder if the rigidity has been lost foreverl

The shape will come back after dunk, pat dry with towel, and carefully stuffed with towels to dry. Do not over stuff otherwise will stretch the leather.
I usually fold a soft hand towel to the same width as the interior bottom. Lay the bag flat and line the hand towel along the bottom , with extra length bend and line along the sides of bag. Then fold more towels to stuff the bag to desired shape. You can gently pat the bottom or each sides to adjust the shape till you are happy with it. Don't forget to Condition the leather after 8 to 24 hrs while the bag is still damp, depends on how fast the leather dries in your home environment. Usually after a day or two, you can remove the towels, and the bag will retain the shape while drying.

It looks much better! Bags normally get stiff from washing no matter what you use. Brushing should help. If it was a leather bag rather than suede you could condition it. Is your brush a stiff one? For suede, I usually use a nail brush (one for manicures) but I have been known to use a fine sanding block.

Ok, THE DUNK is my project for the afternoon. Wish me luck! And I'll try to get photos posted. I tried dragging and dropping and attachinf files, etc, but underneath my thumbnails the photo description is in grey, and it says to contact an administrator... so who knows...?

Enjoy your dunking!!! I have enjoyed it a bit too much, I’m inclined to dunk everything leather these days

Thanks!! I will condition the underside of the straps and a bit of the trim inside but that’s about all the smooth leather it has. I’ve been using a suede brush, the ones with somewhat rubbery bristles on one side and nylon/wire combo on the other. I used the nylon/wire side to fluff up the really dirty sides before washing but have used the rubbery side afterwards. There are a few stray threads of nap hanging around so I’ll sand them off lightly with a fine grit sanding block. Then I planned to spray some protectant on it. I’ve used this stuff for years on some suede boots and it works well. Is there another you’d recommend for bags?

Haha. Wow that’s a big pic. I seem to have the opposite problem as FrecklesRock

You're welcome! I don't have another spray to recommend. I used to use something called shining monkey but they took it off the market.
