Good morning! Did you end up washing these yesterday? If so, how did they turn out?

I didn't dunk - but did start with the black wallet. I rubbed it down with a baby wipe (SO MUCH BLACK CAME OFF) then I've done two coats of Leather CPR. It is SHOCKING how fast it has absorbed the CPR. I rub it and it slurps it up.

Do you have experience with wallets? I'm just winging it at this point!

Umm...should this worry me that the dye is coming off while I massage in the Leather CPR?

I have only done one. I dunked it through because it was filthy. It was the first thing I dunked! A magenta Bleecker wallet (I have a thing for that buckle!) I read some of the older posts before I washed it and ended up stuffing it with paper towels rather than washcloths. I read another post that said she wasn’t pleased with her wallet dunks because she thought she stuffed them too much and they came out just okay. Here’s the post I have from Whateve that I referenced when I did the Bleecker. Unfortunately, mine was lined with coated light pink leather and some of the coating came off. You shouldn’t have that problem.

Also, mine was advertised as red when I bought it for $10 online and it was actually pink, which I didn’t care for. It was mostly an experiment for me to test washing leather before I dove into my moldy lot. I like the way it turned out though! May resell it

Here’s the one from Whateve:
The little wallet was called a multi-function purse by Coach. I don't get dramatic results with wallets as I do with purses when I rehab. I think it is because the leather is thinner. I think you can wash and condition it just like a leather bag. Blackrocks will help disguise those scratch marks.

Unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can to remove the dye on your city bag. Too bad you didn't come here first. You can't dye over the top of black with normal leather dye. I might experiment with RIT dye remover. It might make it a gray color, which might be easier to dye over. The only other option would be to cover the entire thing with Leather Refinisher by Wood 'n' Stuff but it is an acrylic coating so it isn't quite as nice as leather.

You can wash and condition your husband's knapsack. It would help to see pictures and the creed, and to know if it has a lining, to know how to advise you. Several of us have been successful in fixing edges.

I've heard about the baby wipe trick. I would only recommend it for newer bags that can't be washed. I find leather cleaner to be pretty much a waste of money. Soapy water works better, or for bags that can't be dunked, I've used vinegar or a mild spray cleaner with success.

Hi Aerinha! I found your previous post about repairing edges. The edging is peeling off a bag I dunked yesterday and I’m wondering how I could re-adhere it to the flap and strap. Thoughts?
What kind of edging do you have? The leather kind that is a narrow strip of leather sewn in place or the rubbery kind that sits on the edge of the leather?
The leather kind you would probably have to take to a cobbler. The rubbery kind you can buy edgecoat for. Most vintage bags just have the edges painted or use the strip of leather.
Can you post a pic?

Is it possible that that the previous owner applied shoe polish to the black wallet and that's why it is losing so much color?

I've rehabbed several wallets and I have had mixed experiences.

Below is an example of an Ink Bleecker wallet that I dunked and it came out great without any problems.

But here is an example of a Butter Madison French Purse Wallet that was drying all wavy and stretched out. I tried various methods to get it back into shape - including steam iron and press cloth and pressing it under heavy weights - but without much luck. I finally decided to fill the slots with plastic credit and gift cards to reshape and it eventually dried dried in fairly normal condition:

In general, if the wallet is fairly clean and in pretty good shape then I just surface clean it, but if it is very dirty or I am displeased by the results of surface cleaning, then I take a chance and dunk it. Good luck!

I dunked a wallet similar to yours (except mine has a kisslock coin part on the side) in dish soap and water, total time including scrubbing and rinsing was probably like 10 minutes, I can’t remember, but it wasn’t long. A lot of black dye came off on mine too! The wallet itself stayed in tact structurally and no wrinkling for me, but the leather looked worse after, more grayish. I put CPR and Blackrocks on it, similar to regular vintage bags, and it eventually looked back to the way it was in the beginning. The dye seemed to only rub off when it was wet, either with water or conditioner. I’m not sure but I think it might’ve been shoe polish on mine but I ended up being a little lazy and not trying anything else because it looked clean and ok to me.

It’s the rubbery kind. I’ll look for edgecoat online. Any recommendations on brand.

So I recently acquired one of my wishlist bags, a dark brown (Mahogany?) Prairie and honestly I was planning to do a dunk but it came with such a pristine, lovely-smelling interior I said "Nah! I'm just going to try a conditioning first." After a light surface clean, I applied 2 rounds of Leather CPR (really went nuts with the stuff!) and then followed up with an application of Blackrock's (technically 2 apps on some of the more faded areas). I'm very pleased with the result, especially as I do not mind a little wear and fading/patina on my brown bags. I think browns carry the wear better than black. No tag but I don't really mind as sometimes those bug me on a smaller bag, but I am thinking about sprucing it up with a charm! Here is a collage of Before views + my Afters. NOTE: Pardon the "eskew" strap ring in the Afters. I neglected to turn it around so that the gap in the ring wouldn't show oops!

Haha. My hands are still pink from the oxblood Bleecker I washed last night. I don’t know if it’s normal or good but it always happens to me
I often get dye transfer with oxblood/mahogany bags and Blackrock's but it has always settled down for me once dry. I DO however have a black Stewardess I dunked that still has transfer. It is very old and am a bit worried to dunk again. Has anyone put a sealant on post-dunk? Like resolene?

Did you dunk with hot water? Vintage coach bags made prior to 2000's usually don't have edgepaint like that. No big deal if water is a little too warm. Newer bags with edge paint like that, if water is too warm, the paint will melt or crack. Better to dunk with room temperature water.
If you can find (or mix to )matching color with acrylic paint or fabric paint, you can carefully remove damaged section, then use a high quality thin tip artistic paint brush to touch up. I am pretty sure you can find more instructions on internet such as Google or YouTube.
