I just got that exact same bag and rehabbed it this week!! It came out fantastic. I forgot who it was on this thread who told me that made in nyc red rehabs really well, but they were right!
Eta: mine didn’t bleed out very much when I dunked it and also my strap drop measures 19.5 inches on the dot. I think it might be different for each bag though because these skinny tube straps seem like they could stretch depending on how much you’re carrying

Thanks so much for letting me know, am definitely tempted to get it, just seeing if the seller is willing to negotiate on price. It does look lovely. Would you mind posting a pic of yours now you have rehabbed it please?

Hi! That's so nice that your DH bought you this bag. You've got the general idea but I wouldn't do it exactly that way. A 20 minute bath is probably long enough. Rinse completely. Wrap in a towel and blot up the excess water. Put a towel inside and reshape the bag the way you want it to dry. The next day, or possibly sooner, you can remove the towel and the bag will stay in the shape you put it in. It shouldn't be completely dry. Once it is partially dry, you can start conditioning. Apple isn't a good enough conditioner for this. I prefer Leather CPR and I suggest you get it before you dunk the bag. You don't want the bag to dry out completely before you start conditioning. Do several coats of CPR about a day apart, buffing with a brush or cloth before applying the next coat. For best results, a coat or two of Blackrocks Leather n Rich or Renapur at the end will make it shine and protect the leather.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and detailed response!!! I now have a weekend project though I will need to order the product first.

I have Blackrocks from when I condition my other bags. I also have Saphir Reanovant. I will see if saphir is similar in composition to leather cpr because I may be able to use that instead. Really appreciate you taking the time to list out the process. I’m looking forward to bringing this baby back to life!

Thanks  , it feels like Christmas! I did see what looks like a pen mark, maybe an inch, on the flap, that came out with the dunk. We'll see if it stays or fades as the leather dries.
On a different note, the bag measures 13" across the widest, toward the bottom. A Pony Express, iirc, is 11". So I am visualizing a Pony compared to this bag. It would seem to be a smallish bag. I don't know why from the pics, it is so easy to imagine it to be on the big side.
I don't have that bag to use as a comparison but I know you have a Willis so I used my green Willis. The Pony is smaller than a Willis when it comes to usable space. It measures slightly wider than a Willis but its curved shape and tapered top allow for much less interior space. The Pony is extremely comfortable to carry though. It hugs the body and since you can hardly fit anything in it, it isn't heavy.

FYI - my Pony is not lopsided but it keeps photographing funny! It does have an "Irregular" stamp by the creed and I have never been able to figure out what is irregular about it but it is NOT lopsided. Or maybe it is and the camera is "adding 10 pounds" so to speak, to exaggerate the flaw? I don't see it in real life. I just had to mention that to defend her integrity.

Saw my bestie yesterday, the one that I gave a black Pocket bag as a gift at Christmas.
She is using it which really surprised me and my goodness has she been using it The bag has been thrashed as we say here in NZ, she is marked and dirty and worn and I couldn't be more happy about it.
The leather is still soft infact softer now and she was a bit worried when I saw her using it.
No worries my friend. Its a gift and Im glad she is using it.I also gave her a small bottle of CPR and shes going to give it a go over some time.
I love my bags and I look after them but Im not precious about them when they are passed on to someone else.
I really happy she loves the bag and is using it.

This is what the bag looked like when I gave it to her. Now its a bit faded on top and scratches around the turnlock but her leather is still as soft as butter.

As promised, sorry for the poor lighting. If we have a little sun tomorrow, I can get a good afternoon picture. The process, 10 minutes in warm water (kitchen sink) with about 1/2 ounce of Leather Therapy leather cleaner. I wore disposable gloves as I did not want to scratch the leather with nails. I did a gentle toothbrush scrub of the suede inside and just massaged the leather surfaces. Then it had a 10 minute rinse in cool water with 1 cup of white vinegar. I let it drain for 10 or 15 minutes upside down on the LT bottle. Then I laid it on a towel and stuffed with another. About 30 minutes later I decided to apply Leather CPR, wearing gloves, with my fingers. I moved the CPR around, making sure it was absorbed for the most part. When I was all done, I patted it down with a paper towel. Will tomorrow, most likely after work.

Rust Saddle Bag update: the flap is almost dry, with 2 generous apps of CPR, things are go amazingly. Sorry for the mess, taking a quick break from work to take advantage of lots of natural light, helped out by a table lamp. This is actually a decent photo of its true color. I have it hanging by the buckles. We are having a low humidity day, about 35% so I tuned off the air and opened the windows.
Somebody pinch me, this is my HG!

Oh gosh LE, that bag is gorgeous!! I think rust is one of my favorite vintage colors and that bag is a perfect rust specimen!

That's lovely. What a thoughtful friend.

Any suggestions for which product I should use on an expensive bag that has clearly been oiled with something? Would a bath in a lot of Dawn soap be effective? The leather feels wonderful but it smells very strongly of Obenauf Oil (? that's a guess) and it is much darker in color than it should be. If it were a cheap bag I would be more willing to experiment but it was not cheap. I want to keep the bag but it smells so strong that I cannot carry it as is.

The Leather Degreaser product Valv used on the Yellow City after she put O Oil on??
For crap’s sake, I wanted O Oil to darken a few bags and it did’t.
