Lol @ looking weird! My currant bled too much not as much as yours! I only have one coat of CPR on it and then quit. I need to finish mine. Glad to hear she's looking gorgeous!
She is still fairly damp, but looks amazing so far. I took a damp cloth to some of her spots and they were there the next day so I gave them a vinegar wipe because it somehow removes spots/stains. Wish I had remembered to do that on the one Sherbourne spot. The currant darkened up too and has strong purple tones.
So Ive never rehabbed a coloured bag before but I have the opportunity to buy a red made in NYC vintage coach bag for a pretty decent price. The only issue is- the front has scratches!
So any of you that have rehabbed a red vintage coach or lighter coloured one with scratches, did it come out great or should I pass on this bag?
If you could post some pictures here we may be better able to advise you.
Red bags can be tricky; I've had good success with some and not as good with others. I am re-posting the link below because it is for 3 NYC red coach bags that I once rehabbed and they all come out pretty good, and 2 of them had scratches. Take a look and see if how their "before" pictures compare to the bag you are interested in buying.
Just a couple of comments, if you are new to rehabbing then it would be easier to start with a dark bag that is black or dark brown, but I know that it's hard to resist a red bag! But if the bag is pretty cheap then you may want to go for it, good luck!
I have been enjoying bags in various shades of pink/red lately, including both new bags and vintage rehab projects. Here are pics of 3 bags that were "Made in New York City" in the 1980s. I will show before and after pics of the 3 bags firsts and then post photos of the rehab process. I...
Got my ergo pocket Zip the other day and she has finished her rehab. I can show you the befores now and afters tomorrow
Im having difficulties is getting a photo of its purple colour. Just looks black on camera. The before was taken out side in full sun and had too much shine .
Hi I’ve a taupe Prairie and the leather feels rougher and harder than the black Prairie I own. Is there a way to soften up the taupe bag or is it just a matter of breaking it in further? Both are preloved items. i also see that the taupe shade has some darker bits but I can’t tell if that’s normal wear and tear. Any advice/thoughts would be great
What I would do is use a dry, white paper towel or Q-tip to wipe the green off the leather first. I find if I get the green wet, it leaves a dark mark. Then wipe all the brass down with straight vinegar to remove all the green and shine it up. Then if I fear mold, do a vinegar and water dunk before washing it, or if no mold fears I skip that step and just go straight to the wash. After a few coats of CPR have gone on, I do another vinegar wipe on the brass to clean off any accidental conditioning it may have gotten or green I missed.
if you can get the rings off (I have not had luck with this) they are easier to clean. Some use Brasso or a dremel, but my dremel experience was bad so I don’t use one.

I have had good luck with two NYC reds, and so-so luck with a Made in Unites States red. One of the NYC bags even has a glued in registration number. I didn't let that one soak all that long and I used more like room temperature water, whereas I usually use lukewarm or really warm water. They both turned out fine. They took awhile to dry, especially the glued in reg bag, that leather is so thick! But scratches came out and they both conditioned up really well. My water turned very pink in both cases. The Made in United States bag seemed to dunk fine color wise but there was something different with that leather, it would absolutely not get soft. It dried to a really dry feel as soon as the conditioner dried no matter how many coats I added.

Ive attached the pictures from the listing. The seller states the bag is darker than what its showing as. I included the interior creed picture which I believe is probably closer to the actual colour of the bag. Also, I have my eye on a different black bag as well but Im only planning on buying the black or this red one but not both. If it looks like it might be a hopeless cause to you guys, Ill probably just pass on it
I already posted these on the vintage thread, but thought you all would appreciate it, too! These pretties arrived yesterday:
Jade Scooter, Olive Soho Small Basket, and Grape Nubuc Sonoma Flap! I can’t work on them today since I’m not at home, and I want to finish my faded red Drawstring Small Sac before I dunk these, but I did pretreat some parts of the Nubuc with vinegar + brushing and it’s already looking better. Can’t wait to start on these! My faded red drawstring should be ready for buffing when I get home today. Might be able to dunk one of these tonight.

It doesn't look hopeless and it will probably rehab well from what I can see of the bag; does it have the original strap and hangtag? Is there green verdigris around any of the hardware? Is the piping intact on all of the bag?
What is this strange place? Why are my notifications on the wrong side now?
I've finished my Mitchell! This was a pretty straightforward rehab, but the bag was extremely filthy. Her bath turned the color of mud with scrubbing, ew. The overall layer of dirt was hiding a bunch of problems, I think this is the first bag I dunked that looked a lot worse after a bath. She was 50 shades of faded green and dried feeling like cardboard. I gave her lots of love and she kind of came around. The corners are still discolored, but at least feel healthy and smooth. I might paint the strap edges when I get a bout of motivation for doing fiddly things.
Whoever came up with the design and got it approved while the Basic Bag was still in production probably got a big chuckle out of it.
Something I have noticed about this bag is that it is very comfortable to wear, probably because it tapers towards the top.
Overall I'm pleased with the outcome, though not ecstatic. Before and after, here goes:

It has the original strap and the original hangtag. Theres no verdigris from what I can see, theres a close up of the turn lock closure and theres no verdigris on that either. Thank you for your response. The auction on the black bag I really want ends in a few hours so if I don’t win that, Ill put in an offer on this bag. Its a red convertible clutch
