Here's my second rehab and it is yet another reminder that I shouldn't rehab light-colored bags unless they are already in very good condition! But I thought that it was cute for summer and I don't have any bags in this color so I crumbled (again!) It was graciously authenticated by @BeenBurned and @whateve as a Buckle Bag 4157 in Lime, made in 1996.

The bag has wrinkles and stains so I gave it a bath and stuffed it and then gave it a couple of coats of leather therapy to try and smooth out the wrinkles. Next an application of Leather CPR and Black Rocks to finish and I gently polished the brass hardware.

The wrinkles and stains are improved but not gone. In the past I might have tried to mask the flaws if I had any Lime paint, but this would be a difficult color to match so I decided to leave it alone for now. See below for the Before and After pictures and a Catalog page.

After, Buckle Bag 4157 in Lime (decorated with a Multi-Charm Leather Flower Keychain 92081):

Very cute, a great little bag for summer. That flower keychain...perfect!

Thank you @whateve! I am amazed by the gorgeous color of the Cocoa Terrace Bag; it looks so much better than the auction pictures; I wasn't sure what I was getting into but now I love that chunky brown bag!

Thanks @Catbird9! When I saw that fob online I immediately thought of this lime green bag. I usually try to match the hardware, but not always if I think that the charm is perfect for the bag and thanks to @BeenBurned for the 92081 charm picture!

WARNING: This is a ranting post.

I bought a MUCH desired (by me) and expensive vintage bag that, as shown in its auction photos, was a beautiful, rich, mahogany color (yep, wait for it). NO mention/NO photos of any wear, tear, scratches, scuffs, color fade or loss. I was so excited when I opened the package and found the bag to be just as "gorgeous" as shown in the auction photos.:heart:

So, I dunk it.
Lo and behold.......that deep mahogany color starts coming off the bag and onto my hands. And into the water.:amazed:
WTH.
I contact the seller to ask about any touch up with painting/polish??? Yep. It was touched up. Nope. That wasn't disclosed anywhere in the auction information. Neither was the wear, scratches, scuffs, color fade/loss that are now very obvious.:annoyed:

I am SO disappointed.
I was offered a small discount to keep the bag or a full refund to return it.
I will return it.

RANT over.

Thanks for "listening".
Just out of curiosity, what style bag was it?
I hate undisclosed dye jobs so much. Happened to me once. The bag looked to be in mint condition in the auction photos and you really couldn't tell the edges had been painted. It was super obvious upon arrival in natural light though, neither the color nor texture nor sheen were a good match.
I debated for days whether to send it back or not and in the end decided to just keep the bag and start using it because it probably wouldn't be noticed by onlookers other than myself.

Next day, I got caught in a light drizzle and the paint came off on my hands and the contents. Decided to tackle her with acetone and an aggressive dunk as I'd rather have suedy edges than paint smears on my stuff. I got it off for the most part, only to reveal very healthy edges underneath. A completely senseless act of vandalism, lol!
Nasty. I'm sorry you had this experience, it just sucks. Thanks for 'listening' to my rant in return.
If you feel comfortable doing so, maybe you want to disclose the name of the seller?

@aerinha
I'm too lazy to go back and quote everything, but regarding your Sherbourne handle: Have you tried penetrating oil like WD-40 (not sure if that's an internationally known brand though)?
If it really won't budge, maybe you can find a twilly you can live with for the meantime.
Please don't paint over the beautiful patina! Is it still sticky? I can see how that would be annoying.

It is no longer sticky. I think first owner must use too much hand lotion which darkened the leather and left a residue. I think I am leaving it as is, it was just surprising that it looked clean when so dry it felt rough and once hydrated, darkened. I discovered a dark section on the strap too. She must have carried it by the handle with the strap held up

Seems like there should be some kind of sealing product for acrylic paint that can be applied to spots that are touched up, but as I type this I realize it would be hard to match that natural sheen with anything.

I have a question for you experts and people who are familiar with the Mitchell and similar styles like the Basic Bag. After deciding against buying from the questionable seller I ranted about I found the original Mitchell that sparked my love for the style had been relisted and the seller is willing to ship it to Germany. Also had it authenticated.

Now, I believe there were two versions of this style. #9968 is older and looks like a marginally fatter and more trapezoid version of the Basic Bag. It has a single wider adjustable strap that attaches with clips, and a wristlet-type zipper pull.
The younger #9938 is a little smaller, more trapezoid, has a small zipper pull and the strap attaches via buckles on the body of the bag.
I'm currently eyeing the older style with D-rings and clips, and I have looked at many in various colors over the last weeks. On most of them the little loop holding the D-rings is much narrower than the width of said D-ring. Long-winded introduction to ask: Is this normal or do they just stretch out on this style for some reason? Have you ever had a bag that did this and was it a problem?
I asked the seller for pics of the D-ring area and yes, same thing. Would this put you off?

In my files, the 9938 is the older version. The shapes look about the same. 9968 is supposedly 1/2 inch taller. 9968 has a wristlet strap and the removable strap. I can't recall every bag I have had with that kind of strap but most have a loop that is close to the length of the D ring but they have a similar shape with the part that is attached to the bag being much wider and the loop part tapered. On that Mitchell, the bottom part is narrower which may account for how narrow it is at the top. I don't know if all Mitchells are like this.

Got my first Ergo in the mail today...got one in black plus a vintage ergo shopper on their way as well.
Double checking...you all dunked yours didnt you. This ones dirty and the lining is stained which I will pull out and wash first before I dunk the bag.
Such a great size...I admit I thought it would be bigger but think Im still getting confused with all the different sizes. Dont think Im going to get the handles as clean as I would like but that ok...shes a working gal.20200514_123850.jpg 20200514_123906.jpg

View attachment 4730038 View attachment 4730039 Here’s the finished pocket purse. With the exception of the ink stain, she is quite lovely. I also got 15 dollars back from posh!

@tealocean used Folex. I’m going to try that, but in all honesty, I don’t mind the stain. It gives the bag a bit of character.
Its on the back so it wont be seen when in use. I have a big stain on my plaza but its on the back...I call it her history scars

Hi all. I just received this Lindsay bag (from Nairobi, her shipping journey was pretty cool).

She has flap spots of indeterminate nature. Oil maybe? Plus fading under the flap. And an ink stain in the back outside pocket, a bit of which has started to bleed through the back and another stain which the seller said was ink but it was actually thick, and I was wondering if ink thickens the leather or if it is blood bc it’s not a true blue or black.
EE892722-2ADB-411A-8640-B575FDD89166.jpeg
I bathed her w Dawn and it didn’t do much for these spots on the flap so I used a natural cleaner (Puracy, which has removed old dried blood from fabrics and stains on my sons goalie uniform) on it as well. Nothing. Well the cleaner made it super hard to rinse so I tied the bag in a pillowcase and put her through the machine on gentle cycle. She is clean but still has spots and ink (blood?) stains. I knew I couldn’t get her pristine but I would like to try my best for her. Here she is washed and stuffed. 76AD8DCD-F307-4445-AF30-4D2CFB41F5A1.jpeg
Any tips on treating the spots? I read here recently about a “Grandmother’s “ spray for ink. Has anyone had success removing old (could be from the 90s) ink?
I am going to apply CPR and Blackrocks but am willing to try most anything but paint.
Thanks!
