So pretty! Would you mind posting the shade/name/brand of purple dye and other products you mentioned?

If I find some stained light colored bags I must try this; such a lovely shade of purple!

Now to find some bags...
Thanks! I used Angelus products: Angelus Preparer & Deglazer, Angelus Suede Dye (in Purple), and Angelus Matt Acrylic Finisher. Oh, and a mix of Angelus Brown and Purple leather acrylic paint to touch up some areas. I also used Leather CPR and Leather Therapy during the dyeing process, Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP after the last coat of dye completely dried, and Blackrocks after the last coat of finisher completely dried. And lots of buffing between all the coats of everything!

What size bottle of dye did you need? I did a quick search and it comes in a few sizes. Lol I always tend to buy the biggest. But I would use this on a Court, I believe comparable in size to your Devon. All the dets are very much appreciated.

I've finally gotten the courage to dunk a bag and this metropolitan briefcase I ruined in my teen years seems like a great place to start. I wondering if anyone has advice on how to fix the discoloration. It got wet and stuck to a piece of paper, dried, and when the paper was removed the color came with it. After washing and conditioning, would the next step be acrylic paint? I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself, but I feel wholly unprepared beyond Dawn and leather CPR. Thanks!

Go for it! Dark colors can be very forgiving. Yes , dunk and do a thorough conditioning. Then post what is looks like so those who have touched up with acrylic paint can give you guidance.
If you think about it, this is a great starter project. Bag has already been through a lot!

Thank you! I feel a lot better now. I already wrote this bag off years ago, so if it doesn't come out well it won't be a tragedy. I was deciding between the briefcase and a dirty British tan City bag. I feel like this is the better choice since read that British tan can be tricky, and that bag is pretty discolored.

Make sure you have plenty of old towels to stuff it with. My first dunk took more towels than I had and I had to use paper towels. And know where you plan to hang it or lay it to dry.

I bought an incredibly scratched distressed and somewhat stained BT City Bag so I could condition it for a distressed to perfection look. I love it

Thanks for the reply! Do you have a picture? That might be a good route to go. What do you think of this one? It has areas of texture and discoloration from hand oils and grime (I think, based on where it's located) I got it very cheap. It's such a great size and shape so I've been carrying it as is, but I want to give it some TLC. I just don't know if washing it will make it turn out worse than it started.

I forgot to upload the picture

I finished dyeing my Devon purple! There was a lot of trial and error, and there’s some uneven dyeing, but I’m pretty pleased with the results.
Here’s she is after I rehabbed her:

I wasn’t pleased with all the discoloring and scratches on the tab. I only used her once then she sat on the shelf for 6 months.
Here she is after prepping her for dye:

Only the 2nd time I’ve ever taken off the turnlock!
Here she is after 4 coats of dye, 4 coats of conditioner between the last couple dye layers, 1 coat of acrylic/conditioner mix to color some areas that weren’t taking dye, and 5 coats of 3:1 water resolene mix:

I’ll have to take a pic in daylight tomorrow.
Wow you did a terrific job! What does Devon's size compare to? I was considering this style but I need something that can hold my day to day essentials.

I bought 2 of the 3 oz bottles, and I used all of one bottle and about 1/3 of the other. I put way too much on in the first couple coats, though! If the dye dries kind of bronze, then there’s too much dye and the excess dried on the surface. It’s an easy fix (buffing or cleaning with CPR), but I feel like I wasted dye!
