The Wood n Stuff Leather Refinisher does sit on the top of the leather. Though I have used it on a few bags, I would only recommend for a bag that would be a lost cause otherwise. It is VERY hard to remove once on, I have only had success with a magic eraser and then you run the risk of damaging the leather to actually get the refinisher off. In addition, one should note that you MUST disclose the use of leather refinisher if you ever decide to resell it. In the past 6 months I think I have returned 6 bags that I bought on ebay that were painted, including a rare double courier  Some last ditch efforts, including the use of Leather Refinisher, can make a bag unsellable later on. Okay, off my soap box now, just wanted to throw that out there since I have used Leather Refinisher personally and also gotten painted bags that were not properly disclosed. BTW, I'm not inferring that anyone on here is painting bags and reselling, but we do have to think about these things when rehabbing.
I agree with you on all of this. I have used it to touch up a few bags, but I would never use it on anything I was planning to sell (I don't sell, but if I did...and who knows I might do some housecleaning some day).
I do, however think it is very easy to use, comes in colors that pretty much match Coach leather exactly-as in I've used it in parts of the bag and left other parts untreated. It doesn't harden or stiffen the leather like acrylic paint. I have used paint to touch up bags but if I was going to do even a little touch up on a bag in a color I don't already have, I'd buy refinisher before I'd go looking for acrylic paint. He sells little sample bottles and he ships FAST. It's the only thing that saved my Burgundy courier and I only used it on the front panel, it matches the bag perfectly otherwise. I tried EVERYTHING I could think of on that bag-she almost got "studded" until I decided to try the refinisher.
I've had really good luck with very light coats. I put a light coat on my white Ali and it is smooshy and soft and looks great. But I fully agree that a bag with anything but a clean and condition shouldn't be sold without full disclosure and if the seller wasn't clear then you definitely have a case for a SNAD.
