Rarely am I scared/intimidated by a rehab... I'm scared of this one! I just started rehabbing my Swag Bag :sweatdrop: I've had this bag for a while but she's so dry and broken that I've been scared to get started and risk ruining one of these rare bags. Ugh.... here goes nothing! I'm also doing an experiment on a moldy riding bag... wish me luck!

I'm very curious to learn how your riding bag turns out. I had the exact same problem with the same bag! I didn't have much trouble killing the mold, but the leather remained dry and pitted. I was able to get a lot of moisture back into the leather, but the pitting was still there.

Fiebings was the dye I used that went on unevenly. I've never used the wood-n-stuff. I think I would only use it for bags that were heavily stained. It seems to cover unevenly, but it isn't a dye. It's acrylic. I believe it sits on top of the leather and possibly changes the texture of it. Several people on the forum have had good results with it.
The Wood n Stuff Leather Refinisher does sit on the top of the leather. Though I have used it on a few bags, I would only recommend for a bag that would be a lost cause otherwise. It is VERY hard to remove once on, I have only had success with a magic eraser and then you run the risk of damaging the leather to actually get the refinisher off. In addition, one should note that you MUST disclose the use of leather refinisher if you ever decide to resell it. In the past 6 months I think I have returned 6 bags that I bought on ebay that were painted, including a rare double courier  Some last ditch efforts, including the use of Leather Refinisher, can make a bag unsellable later on. Okay, off my soap box now, just wanted to throw that out there since I have used Leather Refinisher personally and also gotten painted bags that were not properly disclosed. BTW, I'm not inferring that anyone on here is painting bags and reselling, but we do have to think about these things when rehabbing.

What an improvement on the pocket! Congrats...

Thanks!

You've really got your hands full with these two...I'll be watching for progress reports and details...good luck!

Help, please! I was so looking forward to my next rehab project - a 1994 geometric bag style 9947. Well it arrived today and to my dismay it has beeb painted with colour change. The listing stated that 'it appeared to have been polished'. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove colour change? I want to know my options before I contact the seller.

After reading through this thread I'm inspired to try a rehab myself and really like this madison creme satchel, I did read that lighter colours aren't as easy to rehab? Do you recommend I try with this one, would I also be able to reshape the bag?

I'm also considering this one:

Saw this one too! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-Rare-...t=Vintage_Handbags_Purses&hash=item565b47ab1b

I need to stop looking at ebay :)
Thanks for your help!

Have you ever tried cornstarch on oil or grease spots?

I think we had this conversation-I must have posted every step of the rehab of that bag...lol! The greasy/oily spots were one with the leather and nothing worked!

Normally yes... but this one is literally on the verge of cracking. I talked to the Leather Preservation Specialists that make the rejivinator and they recommended at least 2 treatments before I go any further. This one has layers of crusty old dried coatings...wax, etc. Just a mess. Plus I need to fix the parts that are torn and can't work with the leather at all like it is :(

Oh I agree, condition away! It's such a beautiful bag I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I actually just updated.... pretty darn amazing actually!!! Soaking in bleach was a risk worth taking on this one as it was a lost cost and SO smelly! I'll condition her and polish the brass and take finished pics. She smells brand new and I really couldn't be happier. I have a british Tan travel bag with the same issues. I'm just leary of getting too carried away with bleach. On this color/bag...it worked though!

I updated that one too... the color is going to be amazing but the previous owner(s) used what feels like bees wax on it. It's literally coated in it and all in the seams/threads. It's going to take a lot of work but my focus is leather integrity then clean clean clean!!!

wow! She looks great! I didn't notice the mold on mine until after the bath. The day I bathed it we had a power outage and had to leave our house. It was summer and very steamy in the house. By the time I returned the next day, the bag was still sopping wet and the pitting and mold were obvious. I have no idea if it could have been saved if we hadn't had that power outage.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I feel terrible since I encouraged you to buy it. It is almost impossible to remove the color. I'm planning on trying something called Rit color remover, but from what I understand, it will remove all color, possibly leaving it a dull gray color. I didn't notice the mention of polish in the listing. It's best to avoid anything with polish on it. I hope the seller refunds your money plus the postage.

What color is it? I used Rit on a courier once that had been dyed red. I had to redye it in the end. You can remove polish with a product called Angelus Leather Dry Cleaner but it too can remove the original color if you aren't very careful!

The bag I'm planning on using it was probably tabac to begin with. It was stained and I tried to dye it with Fiebings mahogany but that didn't go on evenly. I was hoping I could use the Rit to return it to a natural color.

Please don't feel bad Whateve. It was my decision to purchase and I did see the mention of polish. If I can remove it I'd be happy to redye it as long as the leather grain is visible which currently it isn't.

Can you show us pix of the bag and why you think it was changed? I'm wondering if we saw it we could help determine what they used.

I can't remember, but it seems like you got a good deal. I've had a few disappointments and it really depends on how much I like the bag, and how much I paid for it, whether I try to fix it or return.
