Well specifically, 1941 glove tanned leather. I bought a bag that got wet in the rain and the leather under the flap got wrinkly and looks like some air got trapped under the leather. Does anyone know if Coach glues the leather pieces first before stitching? Maybe the glue dissolved.

I was thinking about ironing the flap with a damp towel. Any suggestions on how to get the leather smoothed out? View attachment 4420474

I haven't worked with 1941 bags but the idea trying an iron and a damp towel sounds like a good start. Those bags are leather lined so there may be an airspace (or glue?) between the exterior leather and the lining.

If you have a heavy, flat-bottomed object or bowl (or pile of books?) you could also try setting it on top of the wrinkled area - protected by a towel - to try and flatten out some of the wrinkles.

A couple of weeks ago I bought this. I did not expect the seller to ship a barrel bag in a flat envelope and I did not expect to find split piping either. However, because it was cheap, I decided to keep the bag and report here on rehabbing the glazed buffalo leather.

That is gorgeous. When I saw the first pic I said "meh" but the final pics are fantastic. Which bag is this, specifically?

Here are the results of my experiment. Yes, you can dunk it, and it survived just fine. However, the leather is not as absorbent as the glove tanned leather, probably because of the glaze. The Leather Therapy conditioner did not go over well, I had to buff it off with a soft cloth, after that it was Leather CPR only. No Blackrocks, the luster restored by itself. It feels differently from how it originally was (I have another bag from this line), but it still glows.

This is what I have on my hands now:

It was hard to reshape back to the barrel, and the leather is soft enough that it sags when the bag is standing on its own. It looks better when the bag is carried (here is what it looks like when it’s held by the handles)

As far as the split piping, this is what it looks like now. I’ve just glued it, and will probably apply some shellac (tan cote) on top in those couple of small spots to make it stronger. A leather paint would probably help too, but I don’t feel like investing in this bag any more.

It's beautiful. I would go over those edges with matching puff paint. It doesn't cost much from Walmart or a craft store.

Had anyone seen a replacement for the other kind of lock that Coach used - like the one on Christie bag? What is it called, btw? I saw a bag with one part of the lock gone at my local thrift store; wondering if it’s possible to repair. I guess, if worst comes to worst, it can be replaced with a turnlock, because the original hole is smaller.
I found the listing I'd seen on eBay. It look like it's only for the top half of the springlock and it might not be the right size for the Chrystie. Anyway:

Do you have a suggestion for the brand and color? This is kind of Whiskey colored and because of how the bag aged, it can go darker.
I don't really. It's hard to recommend without seeing the bag IRL. The best thing to do it take it to a store that has a lot of colors and see which one matches. I have an old one from Scribbles brand - the color is just called brown. It might work. The last time I bought one, it was 99 cents at Hobby Lobby.

I'd have no worries about those ink marks bleeding.
I agree! And if you really want to get obvious ones out zit cream can work wonders. Be careful to only put it on the pen line though as it works like a slow, mild bleach and can bleach the area around it. I apply it with a toothpick.

Hi!

I've been reading the thread with fascination for a long time, even gingerly dunked two coach bags with some success, but now I'm asking for advice for a different bag.

I thrifted a beautiful red Liebeskind bag. It's soft and smooshy, and comfortable. Also very very faded.

Can I do something about it? It looks pink in some areas, others are even yellow. I'd like it to be a more uniform color.

Is it possible to dye it somehow?20190503_173914_20190503213732664.jpg 20190503_173940_20190503213655317.jpg 20190503_173929_20190503213713241.jpg 20190503_182446_20190503213637626.jpg

Can one of you knowkedknowle ladies here please have a look at this and tell me if there is anything I can do to make this bag carryable again? It's sentimental because my kids gave it to me for my 40th birthday nine years ago (when it was new) I don't know what happened to it. Cat possibly.
Thanks in advance!

Is that the patent leather version? Possibly puff paint would work.

Dye always changes the texture, usually not for the good.I might try RIT dye. You can paint it on but it is really hard to get it even. Or you could dunk it, but don't use hot water and if you are mixing the powder, don't add the salt. The bag will need a lot of conditioning afterwards to get it soft again. Another thing I might try is Wood n stuff leather paint, but I would mix it with a generous amount of leather conditioner so it went on very thin. You can always add more coats if necessary. You can buy the sample size of the leather paint. It's enough for that purse.
