I just bought an old speedy satchel to rehab for my mom for Mother's Day. After soaking, I realized that one of the handles is all wonky. How can I reshape? I didn't notice the problem until it was completely dry.

Is it soft and squishy, or still firm? If it is still firm, I would hang it so it would dry in the right shape. Put some padding where it hangs to give it the rounded shape.

I got in a Coach Station Bag that is in a caramel looking color. I want to dunk it so I can clean it and then reshape it but there is a pen mark on the inside flap. Is there a way to test it to see if dunking it will make it bleed? The pen mark is not a big deal to me because it is not on the exterior so mainly I just don't want it to do damage to the exterior. Thanks, guys. If you need photos I can add them later, heading out the door to get the kiddo from school.

Photo would be helpful. Small lines caused by the pen accidentally coming in contact with the underside of the flap wouldn't worry me. But round blobs or stains, where a quantity of ink has soaked in to the leather, can bleed when the bag is saturated with water.

Had anyone seen a replacement for the other kind of lock that Coach used - like the one on Christie bag? What is it called, btw? I saw a bag with one part of the lock gone at my local thrift store; wondering if it’s possible to repair. I guess, if worst comes to worst, it can be replaced with a turnlock, because the original hole is smaller.

No, I've never seen one.

The type of ink mark does matter I think. I've never had writing from a pen bleed to the outside but I did have blobs of ink, like Catbird9 mentioned, bleed through to the outside of my british tan manor. I checked the bag carefully before dunking and I didn't notice these ink blobs until the back pocket started turning blue as the bag dried. Made me very sad.

Coach called it a springlock. I think I saw one for sale on eBay a while back, for around $30, which I thought was a bit high.

I repaired springlock on a Chrystie. The back part of the top piece was missing. By a stroke of extremely good luck, a salesman in the hardware store showed me a lamp part that was a perfect fit to screw onto the back. But not all springlocks will have this particular problem.

How exciting as I have one of these exact bag in british tan and never knew what it was called until i read the rehab link post.

A couple of weeks ago I bought this. I did not expect the seller to ship a barrel bag in a flat envelope and I did not expect to find split piping either. However, because it was cheap, I decided to keep the bag and report here on rehabbing the glazed buffalo leather.

Here are the results of my experiment. Yes, you can dunk it, and it survived just fine. However, the leather is not as absorbent as the glove tanned leather, probably because of the glaze. The Leather Therapy conditioner did not go over well, I had to buff it off with a soft cloth, after that it was Leather CPR only. No Blackrocks, the luster restored by itself. It feels differently from how it originally was (I have another bag from this line), but it still glows.

This is what I have on my hands now:

It was hard to reshape back to the barrel, and the leather is soft enough that it sags when the bag is standing on its own. It looks better when the bag is carried (here is what it looks like when it’s held by the handles)

As far as the split piping, this is what it looks like now. I’ve just glued it, and will probably apply some shellac (tan cote) on top in those couple of small spots to make it stronger. A leather paint would probably help too, but I don’t feel like investing in this bag any more.

Your bag looks wonderful! Its color & glow are fantastic. :) Great work!

Not sure what you mean by "newer glove tanned leather" but I have dunked and rehabbed a number on non-vintage bags.
Well specifically, 1941 glove tanned leather. I bought a bag that got wet in the rain and the leather under the flap got wrinkly and looks like some air got trapped under the leather. Does anyone know if Coach glues the leather pieces first before stitching? Maybe the glue dissolved.

I was thinking about ironing the flap with a damp towel. Any suggestions on how to get the leather smoothed out? IMG_20190502_092931223.jpg
