Yes, it might be worn down there. You could try using fine steel wool. I have one bag where part of the suede got completely smooth, like regular leather and I've never been able to fix it.

Thank you for the reply I will give it a try. It is odd because it is one whole "panel" and the other 3 on the purse are fine. If the steel wool doesn't work there will be a scarf hanging over that side lol.:D

Honestly, I don't see any reason to get Apple. I think their products are for new bags. I've never used Leather Therapy. I use Leather CPR, Leather Honey and Blackrocks. Sometimes you can get Leather CPR at Tuesday Morning, Marshalls or TJ Maxx. They also have it at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but it costs more there.

Conditioners also clean so I'm not sure you need a separate cleaner. I haven't noticed my leather cleaner actually ever removing any stains. Conditioning your red bag might make those spots less noticeable. The darkening could be where the color has worn away, so cleaning won't help.

The darkened spots from the oils in your hands is called 'Patina' and not much of anything will ever remove it. It just becomes part of the leather. Many people LOVE the patina & consider it a plus!

I'm pretty sure the darkening is from hand oils/soil from use, because it's on spots like the strap you buckle the bag closed with, and the edge of the pockets. Is there a spot cleaning method at all? Conditioning hopefully won't darken the red one too much, I hope. So which is your favorite for general conditioning then? And how often do you do yours?
I bought Leather Therapy only because I got to stop by equestrian shop when I was driving my son to school, and to get Leather CPR I would have to drive to Bed Bath and Beyond almost a half an hour. I loved it - if your phone will let you go a couple of pages back, you'll see before and after photos of my first rehab that I only completed yesterday, the convertible clutch. I put 4 coats of Leather Therapy letting each dry for a least 12 hours, and finished it off with Blackrocks. Yes, Leather Therapy is pricey, but it's super concentrated, and I hope that 16 oz bottle will last for a while. I think it's totally worth the price. Blackrocks is definitely a heavy duty conditioner and I used just a tiny amount, but it was the finishing touch that brought the color back to life. I will try other conditioners when I have a chance, but so far I'm very pleased with the results. Good luck with your project, everyone here was saying it's always a good idea to start with a black bag because black leather is very forgiving in general, so you should be ok with your NYC bag. Good luck!

I agree you don't need Apple. I can only get Leather Therapy so that's what I use. I just today opened my third bottle and it's 12 months since I got hooked on this drug called rehabbing, so it lasts a long time, and I apply it really liberally.

Post pics of your red bag if you think it will help.

I did it! My first dunk! :D

I think I went a bit overboard with the soap, but I made sure I rinsed it all off. I can already tell the difference, and most of the spots I thought were bad, were some kind of gunk that now is gone.

When the whole project is done, I will post the before/after pictures. I hope I was an attentive student, and now that I am going to put all your great tips to work, the result will show it.

Can't wait to see it when it's done!

Okay....lol....I will slow down and work on one bag, I think I have the new hobby crazies :p I hate to admit it but I have bought 6 bags in 2 weeks, all of which are older and need tlc. My MIL gave me my first Coach so I blame her for starting this, and then I came across this website with the rehabing which has always been a problem for me with furniture and now has moved on to purses lol.

LOL! Same here Shannonmarie - I've reupholstered my couch and chair, and am getting ready to start a 2nd chair - in between working on my purses of course! Can't wait to see the fruits of your newest obsession!
