I am completely sold on recolorant/dye called Saphir Juvacuir. I googled Saphir leather products after they were mentioned on this thread. I applied it to a universally faded black Plaza bag and Pocket purse, and the leather feels fine. And they have a medium brown that I feel is a dead on match for British tan. I touched up a BT Classic Compartment tote with scratches and wear on the edges.
If you do a search on this thread for Saphir, my posts as well as others will come up. It is not exactly cheap with shipping, but I am very pleased with my results.

Thank you.

Thank you. I’ll do a quick search and see how I feel. Ha! I need to muster the courage, I would really hate to ruin this bag and might just use it as is. The stain doesn’t really show while I’m wearing it.

Hi expert rehabbers,
I just bought this basic bag, and I was thinking it could be my first rehab project. I was going to “dunk” it but I am not exactly sure what that entails. Do I use a soft brush or sponge, or just rinse it? Should I remove the strap first? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Also, I was planning to use Leather CPR based on what I read here, do you suggest anything else? I amazed at all your successes!

Also there is a very faint smoke smell. Will a wash get rid of it?

A wash may or not get rid of the smoke smell. Vinegar in the rinse water might help. A dunk entails soaking it in soapy water. I usually do 15 to 30 minutes. Most of us use dishwashing liquid, like Dawn, for this. Remove the strap and wash that too. You can use a sponge or a very soft brush. You don't want to brush too hard on the smooth leather as you don't want to damage it. You can brush harder on the suede inside. Rinse very well. Then wrap in a towel and wipe out the excess water. Lay out to dry, propping it open so the inside can dry. When it is partially dry, stuff so it will dry in the right shape. I use old tee-shirts and rags for this. You can flatten the strap while it dries under books if it needs straightening.

Your bag looks to be in pretty good shape and will improve after a dunk.

First I would check the entire bag for any stains (especially ink, or anything that might bleed in the bath), holes, missing stitches, damage, verdigris on the brass, etc. Look for dry areas and breaks or worn-through spots. If you find any problem areas, post here to ask for advice.

If there are no problem areas to address, then I would remove the strap and vacuum out the interior and brush the suede lining with a clean brush (I use a nail brush). Then the bath. For basic dunking procedures, this post and the one following it might be a good place to start.

I'd detach the strap and soak it with the bag, but take it out sooner (10-15 minutes) You can leave the bag in longer if it seems dirty. I mostly use my hands to scrub the bag, and a soft nail brush for the inside suede. Be sure to rinse well and add a little white vinegar to the rinse.

The smoke smell might or might not go away with the bath. It might get stronger! After the bath, you can leaving the bag outdoors to air for a few days (or longer) which should get rid of the smoke smell, if any remains after the bath. There are other odor removal techniques which you can find by searching this thread.

Leather CPR and Blackrock Leather 'n Rich are the two conditioning products I'd recommend.

Have fun!

Thanks so much for clarifying the bath process, very helpful!

I contacted the seller about the smell, but I’m torn b/c I love the bag, and it seems in really good shape otherwise.

Thanks so much for your advice! The details are very helpful. I guess if the smell doesn’t go away, at least I get practice with my first wash. I don’t see any problem areas, except a tiny end thread on the bottom stitching, but all the stitches seem fine.

I just bought a stewardess that smelled to high hell of cigarettes, I put white vinegar in my dunk water with dawn dish soap and let it soak. Absolutely no smell anymore. Try not to get addicted like I did, and have one lucky thrift find suddenly become 10 bags you now don't know what to do with lol.
