I really doubt you need to recolor the bag. You just aren't using the right products. Coach lotion isn't the right conditioner for rehabs. Try Leather CPR, several coats a day apart, buffing after they soak in. Then Blackrock Leather n Rich for the final coat or two. At the most, you'll have to touch up the corners, which you can do with Leather Refinisher mixed with Coach conditioner. You don't need the leather finish preparer, and I strongly advise against trying to recolor an entire bag. The Leather refinisher doesn't have the same texture as real leather. It is acrylic and if put on too thick, it is bad for the leather and looks bad.

Where can I buy the Leather CPR?

That’s sound advice.
Our local cobbler doesn’t speak much English, so it’s hard to communicate my needs. He does very utilitarian work. He gets the job done, but it’s not so pretty sometimes.
I wonder if I could do a ladder stitch by hand?
I had something similar on a Gucci bag. It was on the side of the bag and the repair person wanted to sew it back in place through the lining, which I thought would look bad, plus he was charging something like $45 for it. So I ended up repairing it myself. I reinforced it with webbing, then sewed it, and then covered the repair with puff paint.

Did you sew by hand or on machine? I might be able to use a leather needle and short zigzag stitch?
ETA: Damn typo keyboard.

I found a couple of catalog pics for the Light Tote, The first one is from 1989, the second one is from 1993. British Tan is a possibility, depending on the year your bag was made.
There we go, I learned something today! A picture is worth a thousand words!
Edited to add, I love being part of an online community that is sooo into these bags!!
