I have a question and if this isn't the right forum, please let me know...

Has anyone ever had a bag made into something else? Like, taken the leather from a bag and made a totally different item with it? I want to make an agenda/planner cover with leather from a bag.

I'm pretty sure this is like blasphemy on a purse blog. Please don't stone me. It was just an idea I had.

I haven't done it but I've thought about it. Post back here if you are successful. I have a lot of failed rehabs I would like to make stuff wiith.

Here is my twill slim satchel I rehabbed recently. Still has some faint stains but overall the color is much more even as I sprayed it all over with oxy whatever spray. I'm using it for a laptop bag (my laptop is a small laptop/tablet, I think 11 inches).

My question to you all is about the hardware, specifically the rings attaching the handles. They do need a clean but I'm afraid if I use my usual fine steel wool on it it may turn out they are not brass but just brass plated and they might go silver. Is this likely? I have a smaller black leather one of these that is similar that I picked up already with silver there and I wondered if someone had polished the brass off, However I'm not sure that bag hadn't had the handles replaced as the handles appear blacker than the bag which looks navy.2018-03-27 12.55.26.jpg

It’s okay, blasphemy is awesome! Do it.

I think they are probably silver underneath. I would also be afraid that any polishing might stain the fabric.

There was someone on here a while ago who made bag tassels from rehabs that didn't work out, but I don't recall anything other than that. I guess it would depend on the thickness of the leather and ability to work with it - it is much more tricky to work with than fabric. If the bag is a donor bag and not salvageable, then why not reuse the leather for something. You should post whatever you make/the process.

The only reason I haven't done it is I wouldn't be able to turn a piece of leather into anything that looked decent. Once I bought a piece of leather and had the intention of recovering my favorite coin purse, but it was a disaster.

I think that is a great idea! I recently wished I'd kept a gorgeous turquoise bag I had a few years ago. I'd gotten it pre-loved and realized the huge puddler was not working for me; so I gave it away! It was gorgeous buttery leather and lots of it. Now that I'm into bags, I wish I still had it to either try an insert in it or use the leather to make a pouch or wallet or something! Planner cover is a fantastic idea! I want to see pics if you do this!

I love your bag. Some time ago, someone mentioned using stick on plastic wrap to protect a bag while they worked on the hardware. This idea might work here, if you are gentle and don’t use too much water, exposing the handle and nothing else, like in a surgery.
