Hi, I am considering buying this bag, but have questions about possibly rehabbing it. If you look at picture four in the listing, it shows some heavily damaged hardware. Is there anything that can be done for that hardware? Any way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Sure! It will be some work though. You could scrub it with the finest steel wool you can get, then polish with brass polish. Or use a dremel if you have one.

Thank you! That's so good to know. I have another vintage Coach Court bag with the same kind of damage on the turn-lock. I was going to contact Coach to request replacement hardware, but this may be fun to try instead.

Sure! The kind of steel wool you want is super fine 0000
Might take a good scrub. You can remove the turnlock hardware to make it easier to get at.

I just finished polishing up and replacing my mini Winnie's hardware and she's looking great! Maybe I can post some pictures tomorrow.

I have two rehabbing questions as a first-time Coach owner and rehabber.
  • I've just purchased my first vintage Coach bag, a green Station bag from (I believe) 1994 and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive. It has an odd stain on the front but I (optimistically) am hoping I can get it out. I was wondering if I need to keep anything special in mind while working with the colored leather or this color in particular? Or perhaps this is an easily identifiable stain that others just happen to know things about that I do not...

  • I also spotted this great little tan Murphy bag and am just wondering about its discoloration. Is this the kind of thing to stay away from? Or does that appear to be something that could be removed or treated?

Most stains don't come out. Some aren't as obvious when the bag is conditioned. If you want perfect, you probably want to stay away from used bags. I think the Murphy could have an ink stain inside that is showing through, or it could just be patina from oils. Either way, I don't think you'll be able to get rid of it.

I agree with the above post. I would expect a rehab/ conditioning to deepen/enhance the green of the station bag and possibly minimize the stain. My disclaimer is that I don't mind certain minor stains, in the context of how a bag looks overall. So I would love to take a crack at a bag like your green baby.
I would pass on the Murphy. While I do not have whateve's keen eye to identify it as an ink stain, instinctively it gives me a vibe to pass on it,
When you have time, scroll through old posts. There are many successes and duds posted. This may help you get a feel as well. Welcome and good luck!

I agree with whateve on the Murphy stain and stains in general.

On the Station Bag, you might have better luck getting some of it out or at least minimizing it. I'd use vinegar in the bath, soak a few minutes longer, vinegar in the rinse, and rinse very well. I love that color!

On a second look, I think at least some of the stains on the green bag could be water stains, which could come out in a bath. I agree on the use of vinegar. The Murphy looks to me like it has already been rehabbed. It glows like it has been conditioned recently. It is likely that is as good as it will ever look.

Thank you. I'll stay away from any bags I come across that look like that one then. I'm definitely still going to give the green station bag a go once it arrives.

Yes, the glow is quite noticable in the first pic! Too bad about the stain.

IMG_3587.JPG IMG_3586.JPG I got my first Sonoma and I'm in love. Whateve authenticated earlier this week and I got it 2 days later. https://www.ebay.com/itm/HONEY-BROWN-LEATHER-COACH-Duffle-Sac-Feedbag-Bucket-Shoulder-Bag-Purse-4927-/253332958495?nma=true&si=WvcfysxH%252BNk5JBFcOE9dT05qbhY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

It's in great shape although there is a slight smell -- I'm just sensitive. I would like to do a dunk bc of this. There are also a few spots that I would love to get out. After reading the post above I'm not sure it's possible. I'm attaching closein photos. Let me know what you think. Thanks

I can't tell what the spots on your bag might be but they don't look too bad to me.

I have dunked a Sonoma natural grain large flap (saddle color like yours I believe) so it can be done but spots may or may not come out. Odors might not be affected by the bath at all (or new odors may arise).

Before dunking you might try airing the bag outside or putting it in a closed container with bowls of aquarium charcoal. This might take a few days or even weeks.

Here is a picture of my Sonoma drying upside down (it's a good idea to keep turning the bag into different positions as it dries):

I agree with Catbird9, you should air it out to get rid of the smell. It works better than bathing. I got a bag with a musty smell. The smell didn't come out in the bath, even when I used lots of vinegar, so now it is airing out.

I don't think there is a good chance those spots will come out. However, it is easier to touch up color with paint on a pebbled leather bag.
