There's a lot of basic information about rehabbing unlined glove-tanned bags, like your pocket bag, at the link below. I usually use Ivory dish soap or woolite to wash my bags. I have heard of using Dawn to remove grease spots but I haven't tried it myself.

I like Leather CPR conditioner, but there are other good conditioners like Apple and Lexol.

You rub it on all the finished leather surfaces and that includes the piping. You don't rub it on the rougher suede interior surfaces.

I like to use Wenol metal polish on hardware but Brass also works well on brass.

Perhaps if you post photos of your bag we could give you more specific advice. Good luck!

Thank you!
The bag is in relatively good condition but the odor is so strong I'm sure it needs a good, long soaking.

Here are the pictures I posted in the authentication thread. (Thanks again Hyacinth :smile1:.)

Nice bag! I just amended my post above to include this thread from Momtok that shows the process of giving vintage bags a bath.

It looks like your bag has verdigris (green gunk) on the hardware. Has the verdigris stained the leather too?

katev, Amazing! I took a quick look at the before and after pics and it's just stunning!
The brass does have the green gunk on the inside facing the first pocket and has stained the leather there, but there's no other gunk anywhere else. Is this a particularly difficult stain to remove?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks but I don't deserve the praise, that rehab was done by Momtok!

I believe that your bag is black or navy, correct? When you wash and condition the bag it will darken a little and that will help minimize the green stain. But in your photos it looked like there was verdigris on the clips too? You will need to clean them well to avoid staining the leather in those areas.

Verdigris stains are hard to remove and I am not an expert, but the link below contains info about a bag that I worked that was afflicted with green gunk!

Here's some before pics of a vintage Rambler the same as Jessi's but in a Mahogany Brown instead of British Tan.

Following message will have the after pics.

Okay here are the afters. She came out such a pretty rich color! This style is also deceptively roomy. Thankfully she didn't smell like an "old baseball glove" as the seller had described. She also responded really well to conditioning and I love the contrasting color of the piping. Not bad for about $28 shipped!

Beautiful! I have a black rambler in my rehab pile and you guys are inspiring me to get her out and work on her!

Hi,
I'm hoping you can help me with a rehab.
I have a Pocket Purse from 1995 that reeks of perfume and cigarettes that I'd like to try and rehab...The brass is fairly banged up. Any suggestions on how to rehab the brass?...

...I like to use Wenol metal polish on hardware but Brass also works well on brass...

I just noticed a typo, I meant to say "Brasso" works well on brass hardware, sorry!

Thanks, she is drying nicely. I had always hoped to find one of the larger Cashin totes, but I was thrilled when I found this tiny beauty for only 2 bucks! I wonder how much she cost back in the early 1960s?

they are hard to find under $100 but I too want the double kisslock with chains. Love that bag!! They usually are from $250 to $500 though for a nice one
