I am looking forward to seeing your photos. I'm starting to buy some pre-owned Legacy pieces and am concerned about the cleaning of these bags as well. As far as the drying process, Katev knows a lot, and I personally will wrap a bag in towels for a few hours, then open them up and let them air dry after that, while checking for shaping needs as it goes along.
I will definitely post pictures. She seems to be drying OK. Only the thicker leather around the turnlock is a bit dark, but it is still quite damp (we are having lots of rain and high humidity at the moment)

Ladies, hello there, new to this forum but not new to loving coach. I've been stalking you guys for awhile  and I've learned so much.

I posted in another thread about this find on ebay - been selling and buying since 2002, and was told this bag was worth the rebhab.

It has taken a beating and when I get it, I plan to follow "Katev" (I believe that's her ID) suggestions - vacuum, dunk (ivory), rotate, dry, condition with Apple....

I'll post before and afters, but in the meantime, share with me your thoughts!:graucho:

Congratulations! That is a gorgeous bag and certainly worth saving, but rehabbing it is going to be a serious challenge. Badly stained light, bright-colored bags are difficult to rehab and the more you wash it the greater the chances of fading that wonderful red color.

You should definitely try and rehab it but keep in mind that if you cannot remove the stains it may eventually be necessary to dye the bag. I am not crazy about dying bags but sometimes it is the only option to save a bag.

I am currently working on a navy blue bag and although it cleaned up well the leather was so distressed that I don't think that I will be able to do anything else to enhance it. Dying may be the only option but I haven't made up my mind yet.

Below for your interest is the link for a similar style red bag that I rehabbed. It is not a Coach but a "Cashin for Meyers" bag designed after Bonnie Cashin left Coach in the mid-1970s. It didn't have bad stains but it was dirty, creased, mildewed, stinky, and the stitching had separated!

Good luck with your rehab, let us know how it works out!

I just realized that I didn't answer your question! Your cleaning regimen sounds good to me but wait for other opinions. Apple will condition the leather but if the stains are still obvious you may want to consider using blackrock leather n rich because it will darken the bag a little and that may help to hide some of the stains and discolored high-touch areas.

If you think that may want to have it dyed, it's fine to clean it but hold off on the conditioners until you take it to a cobbler or other leather expert for an opinion. The conditioners make it harder for the bag to absorb the dye. Good luck!

Thanks Katev, you rock and I learned most of what I know from you!

BTW - There's an orginal Bonnie Cashin bag in gorgoeus red on ebay for sale, I passed this one up b/c it was $350...kind of steep but it's new. It's also the smaller version of the one I am rehabbing Style 9704.

I think that is a solid plan of action. It really is a gorgeous, unique bag-congrats! Good luck and let us know how the rehab is progressing.

I posted about a week ago in this thread, and thank you guys for your advice.

I'm currently looking at a bag on etsy that has some pen marks. How hard would it be for me to get them out, if I even could? Here's the bag in question: http://www.etsy.com/listing/75684700/final-sale-vintage-coach-station-satchel

Is it worth the effort? I saw the post about tan bag rehabbing by katev, and I'm worried I wouldn't be happy with the results. There's also some discoloration.

It's a nice-looking bag and the price isn't bad. I think you might be able to lighten the ink mark but if you try to completely remove it you may also remove some color from the bag. That's my opinion but wait to hear from others.

I love this bag, but I have to say I'd probably not take it on...only because Stations bags pop up frequently and fairly affordably online without any ink stains on them, and I think that you will lose a little of the brown dye and it's in such an obvious front spot. If it were inside, I'd go for it. That being said, though,, if you love this particular bag and the price is good for you, then if you do experience color loss when removing the ink, you may be able to camouflage it with some Eco flo dye or an acrylic paint. It's so hard to know since it seems ink removal varies from bag to bag based on stain's age, type of ink, color of bag dye, etc etc. If you go for it, let us know how it turns out for you!! We are always happy to learn something new!!

I am so jealous, what a beautiful bag. It will be even more so when you are finished. You girls are giving me the rehab bug. Has anyone here read Momtok's thread? Her's is entitled Two Seventies/Eighties Made in NYC bags. There is some great info there as well, and most inspiring. I loved the leather on the older bags, really don't care for the canvas and shiny finish on some of the newer bags. These bags you are in process of rehabbing are classics, they will look good forever IMHO!:smile1:

Momtoks thread is the reason I am now a Rehab addict! (doesnt it seem funny ...most people go to rehab for an addiction...not to be addicted to "rehab"LOL) But it's her fault I've spent many hours of my life and many dollars on dozens of bottles of conditioners, paints, and brass polish :D

MY sunflower legacy leigh got rained on and came out in lots of spots. So I tried 'evenly' wetting her using a damp facewasher and she came out in a bad rash. So then I dunked her in the bath for a good soak, dried her off stuffed with towels and finally applied some leather conditioner - an Aussie made one as I can't get Apple products here. I think it is a mixed success. Here are some before, during and after shots

Before first

Even though the leather colour looked even when it was wet, as she dried out it went darker and then lighter

After a bit under a week I decided it was time to condition the leather again as it was a bit stiff. The front turnlock panels have gone darker again. I'm not sure if they will lighten over time or not. I had a go, it was a learning experience, and hopefully this will help others out. After shots:
