Hi ladies, I have just washed my water stained sunflower legacy leigh satchel. I soaked her in cold water until the colour was even and all the water marks had disappeared. I used a gentle soap on the front turn lock leather patch as it was noticeably dirty, and it came up a bit better. Interestingly, all the patina from the corners etc disappeared in the bath also. Anyway, she is now out of the bath and stuffed with white towels and wrapped in a beach towel. How long should I expect it to take for her to dry out? When should I start applying a leather conditioning treatment to get the leather back to soft and lovely again? I am taking pictures as I go along, but will post them all when she is finished. Thanks for your advice

Grease stains are very hard to eliminate. Is the bag British Tan? It looks light-colored. I have heard of rubbing cornstarch on the spots to try and absorb the grease but these are pretty old stains so I don't know if that would work.

You might consider contacting the vendor and asking for a return/refund because the item is significantly not as described. Then you could start over with another bag. I don't know how much you paid for it but the vendor might at least offer a partial refund which might make you more comfortable experimenting with the rehab (and possibly failing.)

I would soak the bag in a bath of ivory suds and then rub oxi-clean on the spots and put it in a bag and wash it in the washer on delicate with Leather Therapy Laundry Solutions and Rinse. After it dries I would condition it with black rocks to try and darken it a little and even out the color.

But I have had mixed success in rehabbing lighter colored bags, so again, your best option might be to try and return the bag to the vendor. Good luck!

It is def British tan. I emailed the seller on eBay and stated my case. I haven't heard from them and I halfway don't expect to. I had trouble contacting them before trying to get my freaking tracking number. So where can I get the black rocks and leather therapy wash?

You can file a claim with eBay to get some assistance. I had to do that one time with a purchase on Bonanza - I paid but the vendor never sent the item! I got my money back and it wasn't a big hassle. I don't have experience with filing an ebay claim but I am sure that other TPFers can advise you. Ask BeenBurned for advice, she seems to know a lot about ebay policies, etc.

I asked about the color because I find tan bags very challenging to rehab. I have had good success with some and bitter disappointment with others. There are before and after pics of 5 tan bags that I rehabbed at the link below. I was happy with the results of some but not others.

I buy Blackrock"s and Leather Laundry Solution and Laundry Rinse at a local "tack shop" a horse riding equestrian store but you can also buy them online, see the links below and good luck!

Cute bag! If it were my bag I would probably put it inside a net lingerie bag (or tie it up in a pillowcase) and wash it in the washing machine with woolite on the delicate cycle.

There is always some risk when washing a bag but since you only paid $5 and you are probably not willing to carry it in its current condition - it's probably worth the risk. That's just my opinion please wait to hear from others. Here are before and after pics of a canvas and leather bag that I sent through the washer twice!

Nice bag. It looks great. Thank you. I will try that tomorrow.

Beautiful bag!

You have to careful using thick white opaque creams like apple on a pebbled leather bag. The conditioner can dry in the little nooks and crannies between the pebbled bumps and then it is impossible to get out.

I usually use the lighter lexol cleaner and conditioner on pebbled bags. But you could spot-test light applications of the apple conditioner in an obscure area and see how it works.

Oh gosh that\s what i did--put Apple on my pebbled leather duffle It seems really dry now. Any hope fot it?

Before investing a lot more money into this bag you could washing it in the sink with Ivory dish soap or in the washer with Woolite. I've done both with no problems. The leather laundry solution is designed for leather so I prefer it but it may not be worth unless you intend to rehab a lot of bags.

I still think that lodging a complaint with ebay to get a refund would be the safest option. Good luck with your decision.

I've never rehabbed a legacy bag and the vachetta leather is supposed to be very delicate, you are brave! I hope that it comes out okay.

It might be better not to stuff a lined bag - or at least don't stuff her for very long. I would pull the lining out as far as possible to air dry and shape the bag as well as I could with my hands while it is drying. Unless the bag had a mold/mildew problem before you started the rehab, it shouldn't be a problem after washing.

I don't usually wrap items while they are drying but I have done it a few times when I was working with a really dried out bag. Usually the straps are the dryest and I have wrapped them with towels. No idea about legacy leather.

You can apply some conditioner while the leather is still damp but not wet. Good luck with your rehab project!

Here is info about a TPFer that successfully rehabbed a water-stained Gigi:

I am looking forward to seeing your photos. I'm starting to buy some pre-owned Legacy pieces and am concerned about the cleaning of these bags as well. As far as the drying process, Katev knows a lot, and I personally will wrap a bag in towels for a few hours, then open them up and let them air dry after that, while checking for shaping needs as it goes along.

I do have what appears to be good news. Last night I emailed the seller and they were very willing to work with me. I asked for a 50$ refund (I paid 70$) and it is enroute to my account, so I think I will use some of that money to go purchase what I need to fix her up. I don't think the seller knew little if anything about the bag. They thought that because it was "vintage" that it didnt come with a handtag. I explained to them that the willis was not nearly old enough to be considered vintage and it most certainly did come with a handtag. I am happy with the way it seems to be turning out, I think the seller was willing to make it right because I think they KNEW that the pictures posted of the bag were inaccurate, because I have went over those pictures and there was NO WAY you could see that huge spot that I showed you guys. At any rate, I am excited to get started on her! I don't have any leather moisturizer so I would hate to wash her with nothing to follow up on.

That's great news, keep us posted on your progress! The partial refund is fair since the bag was significantly not as described and you are going to have to invest time, labor and products into trying to rehab it. Plus, now that it didn't cost all that much, you will probably feel more willing to take agressive steps with the rehab and won't be too disappointed if it doesn't turn out as well as you had wished. s

You probably already know that if you call Coach customer service they will send you a replacement hangtag for free. They will also send replacements for the turnlock and willis D rings, so check all your hardware carefully. Good luck!

Can't see anything white but it does look a little dull .It looked great after I first appled it

Good! You probably only applied it lightly - I tend to be a little heavy handed with the conditioners. One of my first rehabs was a non-Coach pebbled leather black bag and I slathered it with conditioner that turned into concrete and I couldn't remove it.

If you don't see any visible residue just take a soft dry cloth and buff the bag to see if the shine comes back. If not, try wiping it with a damp soft cloth to remove any film. Let us know how that works. Good luck!
