I do! I want the bag in the wine red and there is a damaged one in it too...so if this works, I'll snag it!

Beautiful bag! I have never rehabbed a patent bag but I would probably start by washing the surface with mild soap and water to see if that helps.

I have also read about using baby wipes on patent but I haven't tried that. I have also heard that pledge polish brings bag the shine to dull patent areas but again I haven't tried it.

A few TPFers have successfully used high-gloss acrylic paint to overpaint damage on patent bags but that would probably be a lot easier to do on black krinkle patent than on smooth olive patent.

Please let us know what you try and how it works out; no matter what happens, it is a stunning bag! Congratulations!

I rehabbed a patent leather bag at one point and the baby wipes with out the alcohol do work well for cleaning. If you have any color transfer or finish scratches, wipes will not really help. I think the wipes are the first line of attack and then see what else needs to be done to help it along.

As for your patent leather bag...I had a rose zoe that got some marks on it from it rubbing against my black coat. It's really tough to get out dye transfers (from clothes/jeans/etc.) I think your best bet would be to cover it with paint rather than trying to get it out. Hope it works out for you!

Side note:
-feels dumb- I never knew Coach would sent out a replacement turnlock free of charge x__x And here I was just about to BUY one from ebay for $9! Ahh...well it makes sense, since they did give me a replacement hangtag.

Thanks! I have already been looking for a matching paint and found a few that could be close...Hurry up and get here bag...I'm all giddy! Even for $40, I think I can fix it well enoguht to make it a awesome dinner out purse!

I usually take the hangtag with me to the hobby store and unscrew the caps to find a few bottles or acrylic paints that are a close color. One time I lost the hang tag so be careful! I always find it hardest to match the mate finish on a glove-tanned bag, but a glossy patent leather might be easier to match.

I just ordered a turnlock replacement kit for the first time yesterday, along with a new hangtag, and the Coach reps were so nice about it!

Even if sometimes it takes a long time for the replacement parts to arrive - they are free and they are genuine and you sure can't beat that! I understand that they will also send free replacements for the large D ring hardware in the Willis bag dowel rod, if you need them!

Someone once told that there is a limit to the number of hangtags or freebies that you can request within a year or 6 months. I haven't asked for a lot of stuff but I have made several requests for freebies, and I have never had any problems so far.

And I recently got an extra large, shiny silver replacement hangtag from the boutique and they were great about it too!

question about dye: hi, i was giving a bath to a couple of distressed bags i picked up. one was a tan, and the water was a bit yellow after soaking/rinsing. the other was a dark brown, mahogany. that water i had to do at least 10-15 rinses, and the water is still pinkish.
so my question: is there a chance these bags had color (dye) added to them; or is this just a natural process that whenever one washes these bags some of them bleed color. is there a way to tell whether color was added? both bags are vintage, unlined "New York City" creed.

Yes, the lady on the phone told me it would take around 2 weeks. You're totally right about not beating that, especially not charging for shipping! :graucho: Love it

Not a REAL rehab but.....

My sister has a nice op art Maggie in brown that she got from the boutique a while ago. She isn't crazy obsessed about bags like we are. I saw her bag handles and cringed, leather was cracked! >_< After conditioning it for her, she just complained of the smell and didn't really care about the handles. The smell will go away but...I wanted to share with people who DO appreciate a good conditioning!

Left: Unconditioned
Right: Conditioned

I'm not sure how to tell if a bag has been re-dyed but you can try to wash it with a dye remover. I know Rit sells fabric dye remover that preps the fabric for another dye. Perhaps you can find one for leather dyes? A leather dye/color remover?

Some other TPFer's have washed with the Shout dye catcher. I don't know how well this works for leather but if the bag is bad enough, maybe it's worth a try?

How do you change the turnlocks? The one on my station bag is coming loose and I'm always afraid of banging it and having it fall off or something :(

Bags always release a little color when you give them a bath, it usually isn't a problem. When I have washed bags that were touched up with shoe polish or magic marker ink, the bags just bleed color and the water turns dark. I have rinsed bags with rubbing alcohol and water to try and remove shoe polish.

I am hoping that the turnlock kit will come with instructions! But DemRam says that she always removes the turnlock when she rehabs a bag, see below:

From DemRam:
"I carefully pry both parts of the turnlock completely OFF the bag when I rehab. It's much easier to clean the brass parts with Brasso, let them dry, and then clean the leather underneath. When the bag is ready, I carefully put the turnlock parts back on. I haven't lost one yet!"

I just pulled this off the Coach website:
The turnlock closure on my handbag needs replacing. Is that something I can do myself?
We can send you a new turnlock with instructions for replacement. Please call 1-888-262-6224 for more information.

I will call and see :) I would like to replace it but was too afraid of ruining the bag or something dumb. Hopefully the instructions are simplified!
The prongs on the inside of my bag that hold the actual turnlock on are open a bit and I have never been able to fully close them so it has been loose since I started carrying the bag. It's not too bad but I think it might just get worse with time. Better to completely replace with new and not have to worry about it.
I'm wondering if the top handle on the station bag had anything to do with the turnlock coming loose. I can see if you have a heavy purse it putting a lot of pressure on the turnlock when you carry it since the strap is on the flap part.

Just when I thought I might be alone in my obsession, having collected Coach since 2002, I discovered all of you wonderful tPF-ers! WOW - what a wealth of useful (!) knowledge and details for implementation. After a couple of days of reading and learning, yesterday I joined up, bought my first bottle of Lexol at Walmart and started rehabbing! Whodathunkit?

I'm lucky to have the ability to spot a Coach in a thrift store from about 10 paces, and lucky to live in an area where deals are still to be had - like the $4.99 "as is" 9976 at GW. In fact, all that was needed was a little surface and interior cleaning and a LOT of conditioning, still in progress.

I'm thrilled to have all of you as a resource! Thanks and watch for future photos of my projects!
