+1 - If you stay on the tPF boards, the progression is inevitable. For me it was:

Phase 1: fixing up my own Coach bags.

Phase 2: browsing for bargain bags to fix up. :okay:

Phase 3: buying every bargain bag I ran across and trolling eBay looking for more rehabs. :cray:

Phase 4: Finding FOS.

Phase 5: Shopping PCE

The only thing I have left is Phase 6: Shopping FP. :faint:

I put myself on a ban but still bought from FOS this week and am seriously looking at a PCE purchase this weekend. Well, OK I guess "ban" would be too strong a word - I was going to be more circumspect in my purchases. In my defense, I only made three eBay purchases this week.

I'm still new here (longtime lurker though), but this assessment is so accurate I had to chime in. I am on the EXACT same path. Currently on Phase 4 as my first FOS order arrived yesterday. Maybe one day I'll have the courage to show off some of my rehabs! :)

No, thank you! I'm in need of that information too and you're doing all the work / experimenting!

I think the hot glue may work if you can get it where you need it with out touching the remaining original edge coating 'cause the gun would probably melt it. Wonder how well the acrylic paint or the edge kote would stick to caulk or hot glue though? I know that you can paint the white acrylic latex caulking, but not sure about the clear kind that goes in a bathroom.

Does the plastic dip leave a nice smooth surface like the original edge coating even though it's not thick enough? Please, let me know how it builds up.

So far I am not liking the plastic dip. It's a smooth finish but it's hard to explain… When you run your hand across .. Your hand stops.... It's smooth but it's not glossy and slick it's more flat and rubbery.....almost sticky-like. Be great for baby proofing. But maybe I can edge coat over it... Stay tuned

Yea, that's what I thought you might have to do because that plastic dip is made for putting rubber type grips on tools. I was just hoping it would build up well and it would be easy to work with. If the edge kote doesn't want to stick to it well, you might have to do a slight scuffing to help it adhere to the plastic dip stuff.

The stuff would probably be great for filling in the holes in piping too.

Hi,

I have an Ergo flap with a break in the leather on the strap, as you can see in the picture.
Any ideas on how I can fix this? I've never attempted a fix like this and it has me a bit nervous.

Thanks for any ideas.

Good primer will make paint stick to just about anything so that's not my biggest concern. Appearance and wearability are the main concerns for this one

Thanks for the link, I think that mine is olive! :D

Funny story...I shoot my photos on my lanai (screen room with roof)...lately I've been doing my rehabbing in my sunroom (too hot and humid to be on the lanai for long) which has tinted windows. Aah, the tricks our eyes play on us. I moved into my bag, stepped outside in full sun and...it's olive too! It's a chameleon bag...brown indoors, olive outdoors...go figure :)

This turned out great, it is a perfect shopping bag. I tend to stay away from newer bags like this because I don't know how to touch up the color. You and Tetondeb have made me rethink that - I've seen kits of the acrylic paint, so am thinking I might get one to experiment with.

I have one of these and also the Monterey flap in smooth leather - it looks great. Mine was the same way - very little to be done to it. Gave it a good going over with a copper brush to clean the surface and raise the nap and conditioned the bridle leather. Done. I have discovered that the bottom corners tend to curl, so I store mine with with a couple of pieces of cardboard and a binder clip on each corner. My flap needs a bath so it is on my todo list.

Thanks! If you have a Jo-Ann's nearby, it might be a good source for inexpensive bottles of acrylic colors...also Wal-Mart. Or an art supply store for acrylics in tubes - much thicker than in the bottles. I have a few of both, but mainly use the bottles, as I find it easier to mix, if needed. The leather on the newer bags is significantly different - thinner and (I think) much more delicate. Personally I like the older thicker stuff!

What brand/type of gel medium did you use as filler for the piping? I think of all the tasks surrounding rehabbing, filling voids is the most daunting. Whether it be replacing thick edge coatings or piping or a gouge, it is difficult to not only make it look right, but to make it withstand wear and tear. Currently I have a bag that has bottom corner piping that has worn all the way through, On all four corners. I've considered patching with scrap leather, but still considering options. I don't want to spend tons of time on different options but I convinced a friend to let me try to fix it before she tosses it

I use Liquitex Gel Medium...the same tube I bought in college (not telling how old it is, but it's old!) But it still works. Patience is the operative word here...repeating thinner coats is better than a thicker application. But wait for it to dry in between. I use it straight out of the tube, but it can be thinned with water. So far, I've had satisfactory results, as it remains flexible after it dries and is paintable. You can probably find it at an art supply store. You may find it in either matte or gloss. Hope this helps.

The story goes.... "Rescuing Maggie"

Once upon a time a beautiful, young bag name Maggie sat center stage. People from all around came to admire her beauty. She shined under the spotlight and her sunny saffron color made everyone feel happier when they beheld her. Inside her heart was a hue of elegance, femininity, and grace as though her soul was made of lavendar satin.

Poor Maggie; one day a careless, hap-hazard young woman wandered by and was also struck by her beauty. She felt the suppleness of her leather and smelled the sincerity of her heart and stated to the caretaker. "This is the one I want. She will bring me joy ,envy of my friends, and will look amazing with my new jeans."

The young lady then offered caretaker and coupon and asked, "What do I need to do to make her mine?" Delighted, the young woman carried Maggie away to her home.

And....

Cool, we're twins on the Monterey Zips! It is hard to pin down the color of that bag!

That is a huge help! you dont suppose the mediums I already own are similar? I know one of them is flexible-ish... even though it says hard, my nail can penetrate. Cant remember which one. I will do a test on something else, but your opinion would be great also on the differences from tube to tub? is there a difference in viscosity or just a matter of smaller vs. larger?
