This little wristlet (MFF #45981 Ashley Large Flap, I think) presented some paint-mixing challenges...but for $7.99 I took the chance. Before pics are here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-818914-186.html#post24990257.

While cleaning the lining with a dry toothbrush, I discovered ink in both bottom corners...yuck. During a warm sudsy bath with Dawn, I used Soilove on the ink and it came right out. There were a variety of spots and smudges on the exterior that I also used Soilove on. At one point I thought I had gone too far, scrubbing a little more than I should have. (This leather is certainly more delicate than other bags!) There were 2 blue-ish swaths on the panel under the flap that remained. Rinsed well and stuffed her with washcloths to dry. I made a mixture of white, bamboo and linen acrylic paints to cover the blue. I applied it with a sponge-tipped make-up applicator, adjusting the color mix a little as I went along. When it dried completely, I applied the gloss enamel (also acrylic) I discovered a few posts ago...also with the make-up applicator. When that was dry I used Leather CPR all over and I’m pleased with the results. She’s a great little bag for shopping...holds just the essentials...iphone and money!

I had never seen a Monterey Zip Suede #6146 in person...til this one! Found it at Goodwill for $14.99 last week, in very good condition and with its hangtag! While in the store, I attempted to search for the style number on ebay, but found nothing. But I remembered seeing “Italian bridle leather” on other Coach creeds so I bought it. I was thrilled when Hyacinth authenticated her. Before pics are here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-818914-186.html#post24990237

This was an easy rehab. Cleaned out the interior with a dry toothbrush, warm sudsy bath with Dawn, rinse and stuff. The only touch-ups needed were a couple of scuffs on the hangtag and handle. I used Burnt Sienna acrylic (tube-type, not bottle)...a perfect match. After it dried, I dabbed on a little gloss enamel. I conditioned the bridle leather with Leather CPR, and gave the suede a light brushing, as it’s a smoother, less textured suede. I love the simple, elegant lines of this bag...she’ll be a favorite.

Good Saturday morning!! So I washed and scrubbed and cleaned my burgundy courier that came with a makeshift strap and here she is. I did buy a Janice legacy 9950 bag for $26 just so I could use the strap, what are your thoughts, does this color look the same, I ask because I never knew that the legacy came in burgundy? Thoughts please. ImageUploadedByPurseForum1374326691.891170.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1374326773.135247.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1374326787.441499.jpg. I'll attach a pic of the legacy in like 1 minute.

It looks fantastic and you are inspirational; I have one of these in my rehab pile! You got a great deal! I paid $25 for mine and it is in pretty bad shape; but I was attracted to the color although I can't decide what it is; do you think it is olive or gray or brown?

I was actually hoping this was a rehab for coach aholics and that you could rescue me. :-s

This thread makes your coachaholism worse! Once you discover that you can fix them up, you end up buying even more Coach bags. My vintage Coach addiction is even more out of control than my current Coach addiction.

Ha! I confessed over here:

I'd still be in ignorant bliss if I hadn't cleaned out my closet. Seriously, I have too many! I don't know what to do...

Thanks so much, katev! I thought the price was real good, based on condition...the style of this bag was an extra, added bonus! I think yours might be olive...check out this one on ebay (not mine): http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-COACH-M...399?pt=US_CSA_WH_Handbags&hash=item20cbf7be2f

There is much more contrast in color between the suede and the zipper. Mine is more close in color. Getting Leather CPR on the smooth leather trim around the bag (without getting it on the suede) is a real challenge. Can't wait to see yours! Oh yeah, and the nickel hardware is the icing on the cake (you know how much I LOVE polishing brass LOLOL!).

Thanks for the link, I think that mine is olive! :D

I don't have a lot of suggestions. I would ask Coach for replacement hardware. The break in the piping I would attempt to repair with glue and acrylic paint. There are current discussions about using edgekote or trying silicone caulk, hot glue, or plastic dip. I would probably wash it and reshape it. Maybe touch up the worn parts with a tiny amount of paint if I could get a good match. Then lots of conditioner.
Here's a link to the post I was thinking of - the blogger used 5 minute epoxy (?) to fill in where the piping had worn through on the corners. I assume the blogger is a tPFer, so if she sees this - nice work!

This old gal had serious issues, but for $5.00 at Goodwill’s 4th of July 50% off sale, I couldn’t pass up a Coach Leatherware Stewardess Bag #9525 from 1988-94...they just don’t make them like this anymore!

In addition to my usual rehab routine, this one needed some stitching replaced and a piping repair. The stitching was a real nightmare, as I had trouble lining up the stitch holes, and the fact that it was close to a corner didn’t help matters at all! But it’s done. The piping repair was daunting too, as it’s on a significant wear point near where the front flap joins the back and goes over the front. I filled it with acrylic gel medium and after it dried, painted with black acrylic. Lightly dabbed on some gloss enamel acrylic after the black dried. It’s not a work of art, but it’s on the “hip” side of the bag and I’m happy with its stability. Leather CPR and Blackrocks worked their wonders on taking care of the other piping scuffs and she’s ready for another 20 years or so!

+1 - If you stay on the tPF boards, the progression is inevitable. For me it was:

Phase 1: fixing up my own Coach bags.

Phase 2: browsing for bargain bags to fix up. :okay:

Phase 3: buying every bargain bag I ran across and trolling eBay looking for more rehabs. :cray:

Phase 4: Finding FOS.

Phase 5: Shopping PCE

The only thing I have left is Phase 6: Shopping FP. :faint:

I put myself on a ban but still bought from FOS this week and am seriously looking at a PCE purchase this weekend. Well, OK I guess "ban" would be too strong a word - I was going to be more circumspect in my purchases. In my defense, I only made three eBay purchases this week.

This turned out great, it is a perfect shopping bag. I tend to stay away from newer bags like this because I don't know how to touch up the color. You and Tetondeb have made me rethink that - I've seen kits of the acrylic paint, so am thinking I might get one to experiment with.

I have one of these and also the Monterey flap in smooth leather - it looks great. Mine was the same way - very little to be done to it. Gave it a good going over with a copper brush to clean the surface and raise the nap and conditioned the bridle leather. Done. I have discovered that the bottom corners tend to curl, so I store mine with with a couple of pieces of cardboard and a binder clip on each corner. My flap needs a bath so it is on my todo list.

Here's the legacy hobo. So you guys think I can use the strap for both?

Ooh there she is! I love this style so much I wish I could find a couple more colors, at a steal of course. I hope that strap works out for you, even if it differs a little I'm sure it will be ok. It looks brown in the picture but I'm sure it's the photography.

What brand/type of gel medium did you use as filler for the piping? I think of all the tasks surrounding rehabbing, filling voids is the most daunting. Whether it be replacing thick edge coatings or piping or a gouge, it is difficult to not only make it look right, but to make it withstand wear and tear. Currently I have a bag that has bottom corner piping that has worn all the way through, On all four corners. I've considered patching with scrap leather, but still considering options. I don't want to spend tons of time on different options but I convinced a friend to let me try to fix it before she tosses it
