This is one of my latest rehab jobs. I think it came out pretty well! I did soak it briefly to reshape it a little. I didn't want to get crazy with it, though, because this style of handle often has some sort of fiberous inner that softens when wet, (learned that the hard way once). This bag has sat in my to-do pile since before Christmas.

This bag is great, you did a great job! I did a slim satchel with those handles and dunked for a while, thank goodness nothing happened to it, I would have been so sad, it's one of my fave bags

Whenever I used Rit dye to tie dye, it never seems that rich or bright. I wonder if there is a beter quality dye out there, or maybe I was just mixing it wrong...
You know, I think it depends on the fabric. I remember when I used to do batik, it worked best on 100% cotton. It might not work that well on Coach fabric but I don't know of another dye that is specifically made for synthetic fabric.

Have any of you ever had a new vintage Coach bag and treated it to prevent wear? I have a new vintage Coach Station bag and I am thinking about just applying a coat of Obenaufs. Any ideas?
I am always afraid to do anything to something that is already perfect. I conditioned a red bag that I thought was perfect and all these black marks showed up. Eventually most of them faded, but a little bit stayed. I have applied Blackrocks or Leather Honey to a new bag to protect it from color transfer.

It is a british tan, too. I'd be less anxious if it was a darker color. As of right now I only have Leather CPR, Lexol and Obenaufs.

I once used Lexol on a used somewhat rough red station bag. It stained the leather so bad. I was devastated...

Exactly! I dyed a pair of really faded black cotton shorts black last summer and they came out great. Synthetic fabric is a whole other beast to deal with.

I thought I'd give an in-process update on my vintage Mini Safari Tote. I am finally getting my act together, and making progress with my to-do pile.

Here is what she looked like when I got her. She's in really good shape, considering she's from 1968! I feel like this bag wasn't used very much. There isn't a lot of scratching on her feet.

On closure inspection, I have found a pen mark on one of the outside pockets, about 1.5" long. I am going to try to blend it in when I condition the bag, rather than try anything crazy to cover it or remove it. After 45 years, I am relieved she only has 1 pen mark!

I decided to soak her, because she was a little squashed. I was a little nervous about it, because the bottom of the bag is rigid and is made out of some sort of fiber board. After it got wet, it did feel softer, but I'm hoping that as long as I don't mess with it and just let it dry, it will be ok. It's not like this bag is going to be carrying any major weight; it just needs to retain it's shape.

The brass was dull, and solid green on the back when I took it off. It's going to take several attempts to get it all polished, because it was so gross.

The cool thing about old Coach leather? It holds water! I filled the bag and pockets and it didn't leak *at all*.

She's drying right now. I'm hoping she will be dry enough tomorrow to start conditioning!

I used Leather CPR on the red bag that ended up with the black marks. Up until then, it was my favorite conditioner. Now I'm afraid to use it.

I love this bag! You didn't have any problem with bleeding on the lining?
