Right now I'm really eyeing this vintage Coach portfolio clutch.

The good new is that this is the cheapest I've seen the price on one this size off of eBay, but the bad news is the color! I really want this in a warm, british tan. How much of the blackish color would come out after a long bath and some leather conditioner?

I have the exact same bag which I've given a bath to and have conditioned. If anything, it remains the same or gets even richer chocolate toned. There's a possibility that the sellers photo looks darker than in real life. But, I am not sure this style bag ever came in British Tan. Hyacinth who answers a lot of authenticity questions might know the answer to that. Here's a close color sample of mine.

Once you get it cleaned up, you might end up liking that color...it's a beautiful color bag, and I don't normally like browns!

Here are before and after pics of a dark brown basic bag that I rehabbed and it includes pics of the same bag in the same color that was been rehabbed by momtok:

Thanks so much everyone! I cant wait to try this! I actually am looking at a Coach made in NY on ebay to try this out on before the Bonnie Cashin. Hope it works, as this one is a light blue, but only $30 with shipping. Thank you all, your all so helpfulland nicel!

Thank you Katev for this wonderful explanation of your rehab. I have been wanting to fix up my Bonnie Cashin, but could not think of dunking her in water! Now you have given me the faith. I did just buy a vintage made in usa Coach Soho Bucket in light blue on ebay #250892292266 that was a steal, and I cant wait to try my hand at rehabbing. Everyone here is so nice, cant wait til I can post a few pics of my girls.

I am really struggling with some serious ink spots on a vintage basic bag I am trying to restore. I have done searches for "ink" and read through tons of posts, but if anyone has ideas for me I'd love to hear them. The bag was only $4.40, so even though it had suffered a blue ink pen explosion, I wanted to give it a shot.

Tons and tons of ink has come out already. I started by using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Two baths in the sink - one with ivory, one with woolite. I pretreated with shout gel and then bathed the bag for the second time. Then I made a solution of water and non chlorine oxyclean, dabbed it on the spots both inside and out, and got tons of ink to come out onto a white rag. The bag then went through the washing machine with TIDE with bleach alternative!! :D The other night I went back to the cotton swab/alcohol method and blue ink is still coming out!

Would you guys keep dabbing alcohol on the spots patiently? Believe it or not, they are still dark, dark blue. Any ideas for what would work more quickly and effectively? Suggestions for risky methods welcome - the bag was not very expensive and I put it through a lot already.

What color is the bag? Can you post any photos? It would help us see its current status :smile1:

Lindsay, is this bag with ink on it fabric? For ink on fabric liners, I have in the past soaked the liners in alcohol with very good results. I soaked the liner for a couple of hours. I was able to turn around a vintage Cashin Kiss lock tote with the vintage legacy lining. It was covered in ink and came out perfectly. If your bag is leather, I would not do this.....

Pictures would help.

ok all u rehabbers out there- anyone have any ideas for cleaning discoloured patent?

Discoloured patent? Is it faded or is it a stain?
If it is faded, there is nothing much that can be done aside from conditioning. Stains may be removed possibly. Magic eraser or baby wipes may help....

I recently purchased a coach vintage bag from ebay. I like it but feel it needs some rehab work. The bag is quite clean, but the brass is rusty and also it got some scratches on the surface of the bag. Here are some photos from ebay seller.

I have no experience on how to fix it. Could you give me some suggestions? The more details, the better. Thank you all so much!

I'm working on a rehab project as I type this. I am finally working on my legacy shoulder bag that I purchased on ebay well over a year ago. It's the clay color but when I got the bag it was more of green dirty color. I tried to clean it unsucessfully when I got it with a lot of apple cleaner and conditioner and it did help but didn't totally resolve the issue.

I dumped it in a deep bucket with a bit of mild cleanser(woolite). It was amazing the dirt that was released off that bag. Let's just say it's now back to the clay color. When it dries I'm going to really apple it.

It's not fabric :(

Here are some pictures of it's current state; the first four pics show the inside and outside where the ink stains are (the second and fourth pictures are of the same staining, same goes for the first and third pictures).

The last pic I included just to show you the overall color of the bag - obviously it's not the side of the bag with the round spot on the outside. The stain depicted in the first and third pictures is on one of the bottom corners of the bag.
