The bag is brown and I dunked it today. Omg the water was so, so brown. I'm not sure if she was shoe polished as she's drying now, but the edges so far look good. When I dunked my red bag I was surprised at how red the water turned, but wow today on the brown. Is that normal or is it paint/shoe polish in your opinion?

Probably shoe polish. I love your cat, saw her pic in the secondhand thread! You got 2great bags.

It is hard to say. When a bag bleeds color it is often due to shoe polish but I recently rehabbed a red bag that turned the water the color of blood, but the bag came out fine, good luck!

Hi all,

I posted this "Saks Fifth Avenue" briefcase for authentication a few weeks ago. I've now recieved it and Apple-conditioned it, but the spots aren't going away.

-- WHATEVE -- you had said they might be mildew, and you had rehabbed this same bag.. do you have any tips for me? :smile1:

Here's the link to the purchased bag:

My briefcase like this didn't have spots so it rehabbed easily. Did you wash it first? I have a burgundy bag that has spots but they aren't as obvious as on your bag because it is a darker color. I mixed paint with conditioner. You can still see them but I think it looks better. It is hard to get a good photo of them, but this is what they look like now.

I have many bags bleed profusely, usually the older ones. I think the dyes used on the older Coach bags weren't as colorfast as those used later. I had an early 90's black bag that didn't bleed at all. The worst one I had was an early 90's green pocket purse.

Thanks so much for the replies. The more the bag dries I think is a mixture of shoe polish and the dye itself. At least I will know for sure what's been done when I'm finished. I was uneasy carrying the bag even if it looked great and shiny.

Good luck with your rehab efforts. It's a handsome briefcase.

Ok, dunk it or no?

She's pretty clean, just needs reshaping. Maybe a quick dip? The only visible soiling is some burnishing on the handles which a dip probably won't fix anyway.

I have what I believe is a Worth bag in wheat, a sort of beigey yellow. It is quite scuffed and scratched around the edges. I washed it and it definitely looks cleaner and brighter. I've put two coats of Lexol on it, but it still looks scratched. Should I use Black Rocks on it? When the Lexol is still wet, the scratches look dark. I'm wondering if the Black Rocks will make that look permanent, which would not be a good look. But the Lexol on its own doesn't seem to be enough moisture for the bag.

The Blackrocks can be washed off if this happens but I bet it will blend in. In my experience, the Blackrocks initially darkens the leather but after a few days, it soaks in and the color returns to what it was. You could try a bit of acrylic paint mixed with conditioner to help on the edges. I find that if I put a tiny bit on and then wipe it off immediately with a paper towel, it leaves just enough color to blend.

What color is the bag? For most unlined, gloved-tanned leather bags my first inclination is to dunk it because I will know that it is clean, and it often plumps the leather and I can reshape the bag if it has gotten a little droopy.

Here is a bag that I didn't want to dunk because I was worried about losing color but it had an odor and so it got a bath, and it came out looking much better:

I am in love with that green color!

I just received a city bag from the bay. She is gorgeous, shiny, seems well conditioned. Faint non offensive odor inside but it's ok. Should I dunk her? I feel oddly compelled to lol and I don't know why. What do you all do?

I know the feeling! Once you clean a bag and see all the gunk that's come off and how clean it looks after, you feel the need to do it all the time.
I'd do it even though she looks clean since I wouldn't be sure until I cleaned her myself.
