One of my projects is completely dry and I have conditioned it with apple conditioner. I've been carrying it; I couldn't resist. Originally it got a bath in woolite and warm water, which cleaned it up IMMENSELY. However, now I am tempted to try soap and water spot cleaning with Ivory dish soap, to see if perhaps some residual staining is grease based and would come out. Is spot cleaning with soap and water okay? I thought so, since it was soaked completely in water, but is it better to re-wash the entire thing?

Also, a pen mark has faded but is not completely gone. I used a rubber eraser and then alcohol. This was on the outside of the (tan) bag. Is there anything else I could try?

Lindsay, regarding spot cleaning: use caution. You may end to with water spots with generalized spot cleaning. Massage clean outward and get lighter and lighter with the water as you go out to avoid spots.

I have worked with saddle soap before with good results. Unless it was not properly applied/ rinsed it should not be a problem on your vintage bag. If there is some kind of residue or something left, I guess I would try giving the bag a bath with a very small amount of soap and rinse really well.

I've never had to deal with that circumstance. I would suggest a long soak in warm sudsy water. Maybe 2 soaks!

What type and color bag is it?

Thank you. What would you add to the water to make suds? Not saddle soap, I hope. ;)

It's a black vintage leather bag - not lined. I don't remember the style number. It does feel awful - almost waxy & sticky at the same time. Sort of smells, too. I was told she used saddle soap on it FOR YEARS. Maybe I'll just let one of the other lucky heiresses have it.

When I give a bag a bath in the sink I usually use Ivory or Woolite soap. If that doesn't work, you might try the leather wash product at the link below, designed for bikers to wash leather in a home washing machine. I used it on a leather bag recently and it came out fine.

Sadly, I was not patient and I went ahead before seeing this, with not great results. I tried conditioning it, then, which did seem to help the bag overall and make the new water marks (?) less noticeable.

Not only that, but this bag seems to be a magnet for stuff and it has another spot of something that darkened the leather from today. I don't know if I should give it another full bath, then condition, then spray it with apple guard? Or keep conditioning to even out the color of the leather, then spray with something? Thanks in advance for anybody's thoughts.

I'd bet a good soak would do wonders. The saddle soap having been used might just mean that the bag's leather/structure will be wonderful later so definitely give it a shot. Can't wait to see photos...:D?
