I feel the same way. If I buy a vintage bag in mint condition, I feel like I am destroying the value if I use it. I'm not rough on bags at all but I am very picky about having them remain in perfect condition. But I prefer to buy a used bag in great condition than a new with tags bag because it seems so final to remove the tags!

I think we all have this in common! sometimes now even AFTER i rehab them I just want to hang them up to look at them and tell everyone not to touch LOL

Sounds like a plan although sometimes you need multiple applications! But I warn you that I have rehabbed bags that didn't mean much to me only to find myself becoming emotionally attached to the bag after I've invested effort and energy into rehabbing it!

Ain't that the truth. I have a new plan to make my trash can city bag carryable.

I feel like I have been gone for so long!!! It has been a crazy crazy couple of days, anyone get anything cool?? I found an old made in italy Dooney and Bourke wallet in pretty good shape just needs to be cleaned up, ill post pics in a day or so. I know its not Coach but I love you ladies here LOL

I didn't get any new purchases but I discovered that my rehabbed Cashin for Meyers bag is worthy of being called a "museum piece" so I am pretty excited!

You're definitely right; I'll see where the bag is after the first application of Leather CPR! And I feel like I might get attached to the bag after investing so much time and energy into it, but I decided beforehand that while it is a beautiful bag, it isn't one I can see myself carrying (I typically shoot for the more utilitarian style bag with long shoulder/crossbody straps). However, I know I'll receive a great amount of pleasure from cleaning it up and selling it to someone who will really love it!

Congrats on your first rehab! They're both gorgeous!

Thank you, so much! I was only expecting to rehab one Coach bag (the green Casey), but I fell in love with the Manor bag almost immediately and couldn't resist!

Today I got my little Coach Wendie. I got her for a decent price and she was in overall in good condition. Just needed brass polished etc. She came stuffed with paper and zipped. I pulled the paper out when it arrived to inspect it the inside. I was just putting a coat of moisturizer on it and started to zip it up to get the edges and the "cloth part" of the zipper was pulled apart at the "closed" end! The leather pull tab is perfectly intact and it's a beautiful little bag . . .the zipper's teeth are fine, just the fabric that's rotten I guess. :-( Any suggestions other than trying to find a leather shop? (We have none!) Tia for your help!

I don't think you need a leather shop unless you think you need to replace the zipper. You can go to any fabric store and get something to repair the fabric. I'm thinking ideally of something you can bond to it from the underside to hold it together, but most of those have to be ironed.

Thanks Whatever. That's a great idea! As a matter of fact, I just bought a brand new tube of "Liquid Stitch!" Maybe I can bond some fabric underneath with it as well as pull the material together. Hmmm. . Maybe all isn't lost after all! I'm so glad I ask here! Thanks again and I'll report back with my progress! :-)

I've been out of control-as usual..but the deals are so good: A Legacy Leigh in Raisin color just arrived in the mail today. (HG happiness). I am awaiting two bags, one that the seller didn't list a name or much info about it, but the photo looked like an Italy bag, so took a shot with her. Fingers crossed. And I decided my reverse suede (Cashin era?) green bag needed a Crescent?/Saddle bag to match so I'll be posting those "family" photos soon. I love Dooney and Bourke....especially the All weather leather vintage stuff, and the new Alto line and Florentines are beautiful. I am so glad they are bringing back some beautiful stuff. Was getting a little tired of the "cartoon" teenager stuff.

Can anyone tell me the name of this bag:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/18092657464...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_6764wt_1002

I fell in loooooooooove as soon as it popped up... The shape, and even the dirt. Waited all week, bid in the last minute & 1/2, got outbid by a dollar within the last 5 seconds. It hurts. But now I need to move on, and it would help to know its name so I can keep a better eye out for it.

The Crescent bag. It looks nearly identical to the Saddle bag except for the line going up the middle, and possibly they are slightly different in size but I don't own both so am not sure about their respective sizing. The gals over in the I.D. thread are the true detail experts. I own a Saddle bag and I love it. The Crescents do show up quite a bit, but are pretty popular so sell well, and often are higher than I can pay.

I would probably use Leather CPR. I got some at Marshalls for a great price. You could always try Blackrocks later but it is tricky to use.

To follow up - thank you (multiple people) for the advice to use Leather CPR on a dried-out cowhide bag. I bought the bag from a gal who bought it from somebody else - it was NWT and the creed indicated a Soho Buckle bag almost 20 years old. Looked like it had just been stored away forever, and the handles were so stiff I couldn't even remove them from the buckle.

I got the 8-oz tube of Leather CPR (12.95 at my local hardware store - I was eager to start this process). The sides and base got much softer with just one application. I did 2-3 applications on the straps and they are much better now.

I like the mild scent of Leather CPR (mint? balsam?) and that I can use it without skin irritation. A tiny little bit of material (dirt? dye?) did come off onto the buffing rag I used at the end and onto my hands. I'm OK with that in a bag of new condition but I hope none of it rubs off onto my clothing! It's airing out now and will hopefully get used soon.

One thing I haven't figured out is how to soften up or get rid of dried out glue. There is an inner pocket that was glued down but over the years the glue has dried up and there's some brown and white residue there. Doesn't seem to be flaking off badly now, but it sounds crunchy when I move the pocket.

You all provided some great tips!

Latest rescue is my Coach Manor 9977 that I bought for 0.99 cents. I figured, what's the worst that can happen for a buck? When I received it it has this large stain on the front, so It is presently having a bath after I covered the stain overnight in talc to see if it had any grease that could be absorbed. Will post the after pics when I see how far I get with it today.
