...So, when I say there are no nicer thrift stores in my area, I could take an expedition into town, there are some thrift stores in nicer areas, but considering the dearth of Coach stores, (we have always had dept stores that sold Coach though) I think the odds of me finding anything besides fakes on any random trip are next to nil. They are out there, but I suspect it would be very slim pickings, unfortunatly, and it's too far to go on a regular basis.

My problem is too many thrift stores and absolutely no willpower!

Yesterday I drove past a religious thrift shop on my way to an appointment so I just had to stop and check out the bags! They had a few interesting items at very good prices. They had a Kate Spade microfiber Messenger Bag for $3. I have one that I use for travel and it is great and I was sure that this one was authentic; but the corners were wearing through so I left it there.

I did find a cute Kate Spade microfiber accessory zip pouch in pristine condition that will match my messenger bag perfectly, and it was only $1! It's mine now!

Next I found a fake legacy zip so I passed on it but then I spotted a navy (or black?) court bag in generally good condition; except that the previous owner had shortend the strap and did a very poor job of it! I probably should have left it there but the bag was only $3 so I caved in and bought it. Why didn't I just leave it behind, now I will have to deal with the strap problems?!

You can see authentication pics of the Court bag at the link below and I am posting a pic of the butchered strap here. Also below is a pic of the back of the bag that shows just how short the strap is now.

Any suggestions? Should I just try to replace the strap or do you think it would be worthwhile to see if a cobbler could do anything with it? Or is there something I could try myself to make it a little better?

It would have been preferable if she had tied a knot in the darn strap rather than hacking at it with a dull scissors and a rusty ice pick! Good grief, the hangtag is also missing from this poor abused bag!

And I can't drive past garage sales either! I just came back from a hair appointment and stopped at a garage sale. No bags but I picked up a large nambe vase for $10! :graucho:

any idea how much she hacked off? how annoying!

One of the neighbors was having a garage sale. I was heading out for my run (waddle), and I forced myself to not stop. It looked like they had TVs and appliances and I saw a truck pull out with some washers and or dryers that may or may not have come from that sale. But they also had a table full of stuff and, like I say, this area runs the gamut of income levels, this is probably one of the nicer houses and they've lived there quite some time-you know how you accumulate stuff. ;)

Anyway, I forced myself to walk on by, I already started too late and it was getting too hot, I knew if I stopped I would turn around and go home. I consoled myself that I'd stop on the way back but by then I was way too hot so it wasn't even a temptation to take the few extra steps past my house to check it out.

I hope I can make do with my current projects for awhile and not spend any more money! I don't think I could handle the tempation you have to deal with.

At least a third of the strap is gone if not more; and she put the new holes very high up on the strap so the available length is really quite limited.

I was think of asking the cobbler to repair the butchtered end of the strap and insert a new hole near the end to add a few inches of length, but I don't know if it is worth the repair expense?

I should have left it behind, why do I do this to myself?! :shucks:

Maybe you can use a strap from one of your other bags when you want to carry this one? The Willis strap is very similar...

I have my own good news today! I have mostly stopped collecting and repairing Coach bags, I am now selling the ones I don't like on e-bay, and am hoping to save up for my dream bag by this time next year... a vintage Hermes Kelly... Docrides threads really inspired me, and I really want to take the plunge...
Anyway, Coach called me today. I had sent my Stewardess in for grommet repair, and they said the bag is now repaired and I should get it back in two to three weeks from today!! Yay!! I hope they were able to match the grommets!! I will post photos once the bag comes back!!

You're telling my life story....:)
That Court bag was WELL WORTH $3. I love the Court bag and I think it might be worth buying a strap for it since it's such a classic enduring bag!! Your thrift shops are over all much better priced than mine are!! Mine are just getting worse at ratcheting up the prices.
I found some great stuff this week too ! Just had to "drop in and look" ....I almost always find something cool.

Hi ladies,
I was hoping making you can help me. I have a dark brown leather satchel, sorry I forgot the name of it. The corners of my bag have started to turn orange and also areas in the back of the bag. Any ideas of how I could fix the orange areas. I was thinking brown shoe polish but am to scared to try it. What do you recommend? Thanks for your help in advance.

I would recommend either acrylic craft paint (take the bag with you to the craft store and look for the best possible match), or Meltonian shoe polish (it sinks into the leather and does not rub off or wash out, miracle worker for bags), or even Feibing's leather stain (also sinks right in and does not rub off or wash out). You can get the last two on e-bay, but since the bag is brown you might need to order two colors that are similar and blend to get an exact match...

The Court bag is what started this whole journey for me in the first place!! I bought my first one while active duty in the US Army... matched my uniform and was the only brand endorsed by the US Army for carrying with a uniform... they used to sell them in the PX on some bases...
I paid $150 for mine at the outlet store in Carmel, CA in 1997 and thought I was getting a deal. $3 makes me want to cry... lol!!
And then, after all that... it was lost during my divorce when my ex husband sent me to jail for something I did not do, cleaned out the house, and put all of my belongings out on the driveway... he let his employees (he owns a restaurant) come by and take whatever they wanted.

I have been slowly replacing the things I lost ever since... and mostly have everything back again except heirlooms that were not replaceable...

Your Court bag is beautiful, and my favorite color for any bag... black!!
