I am rehabbing a vintage 1970s zipper portfolio or clutch that has a couple of odd features. There is a hole punched into the side of the bag near the far end of the zipper - and I think it is for the hangtag chain but I have never seen that construction before.

The ends of the leather strap on the zipper pull have come undone and I am having a hard time figuring out what they are supposed to look like. DemRam thinks that the ends should be folded down and stitched, and that sounds right but I am wondering if there is more needed to make the ends look "finished"? I will probably take it to a cobbler but I am not sure what to tell him. Maybe just ask his opinion?

Below is the link to pics of these unusual features and also the link for a completed ebay auction for a similar bag.

I was hoping that a few of you would take a look and give me your opinions on these mystery features. Thanks!

I have no clue about the little hole, but I wonder if the strap should be like the ones on Basic Bags, but was torn away or cut off and is missing the leather covered wrap that originally covered the stitching. Just a thought.

They are both so devious when it comes to getting what they want. They LOVE chicken jerky. They get 2 strips before bed everynight. I used to keep it in the den by my chair, but had to move it to the kitchen counter. The container has a screw on lid with the handle built in. They would make their way back to the container, lift it with the lid and either plop it at my feet, or take it into another room where they would attempt to open it. Thank goodness they don't have thumbs. They open the sliding door to my patio. Rita stands up and pushes the door, Beau sticks his nose into the opening and pushes it all the way. They would have given Houdini a run for his money.:D

Love the puppy stories you (and others) have posted...helps us all get to know each other on a different level.

the little hole is definitely a hang tag hole. The strap is odd. It's almost like the previous owner had the strap break from the metal loop, and then just reversed the handle and put the unbroken part into the loop, leaving the previous inner end as the outer end? Does that make sense? Is the metalstrap loop original to the bag, in other words?

Had I only SEEN the photo and not READ your message, I would rather take my chances with my alligator than these two...this time a few words is worth more than the picture!

Ooooh...I'm so sorry for your loss...happy to have met them, though.

heh, if I wouldn't be taking the thread even further off topic, I would post pix of them with my kids-Justin would toss me around when we played tug, but he was sooo gentle with my (then) 6 year old son, and they would both obey every command from the kids though they could obviously just run 'em over. I was also very careful about how the kids treated the dogs and it was awhile before I would leave Justin in the same room with the kids alone-he was so good with them but considering his history and his size, I wouldn't risk any sort of accident. Anyone who leaves large dogs with small children is risking the dog's life at least-even the most trustworthy dog can be put down by authorities for an accidental injury, and most people really can't judge dogs well enough to know that a child is 100% safe.

steps off soapbox

and thanks for your condolences, I have been very lucky with ALL my pets, they've lived LONG happy lives and I miss them but I know at least it was their time to go. Even my aquatic frog lived to be almost 20. :)

That's exactly what I was going to see-surely Katev has a basic bag around somewhere? :)

are you saying they work together to open the door? or that they each have their own way of doing it? Jessie, the dobe I had before my two doberterrors could open gates, but she would never leave her area. It was like her little joke and you could just see the gleam in her eyes when she did it. She was, I have to say, the most perfect dog ever...sigh.

And I swore I wasn't going to talk about this any more, but...your story about how you got your boy reminds me. When Jessie turned 10 she was still going strong but my kids were little and as much as I knew I would be heartbroken when she died (she went everywhere with me), I thought it would be easier on the kids if there was no gap so we got Scarlett as a puppy...again this is another dog that was "right place, right time". I'm a big advocate of rescue and I purchased her from a breeder I wouldn't normally have supported, but I was kind of in a hurry and I loved the parents and took the plunge. Turned out she had a deformity (my dog had two anuses) and should never have been bred. Worked out find for us as we were going to spay her anyway, but the vet told me that she could have other deformities and never should be bred-if she'd gone to the wrong home you know that advice would have been ignored. She was perfect-gentle with the kids, quite the little lady.

Six months after we got Scarlett Jessie was diagnosed with cancer and passed away soon after. I was up all night with her in a snow storm and she died at home.

Turns out a good friend of mine was one state away in an even worse snow storm delivering puppies. These were extremely well bred pups from famous dogs and they were all spoken for and went for a high price. However one of the puppy owners reported nothing but problems and finally the breeder took the dog back. He had a different name then but they were afraid to even TOUCH Justin when they first got him back. I'm kind of amazed I risked bringing him home considering I had a 6 year old and a 10 year old at home, but I knew his mother and grandfather well, and they were two of the best dogs ever. I can't emphasize enough that this breeder was one of the most well respected breeders ever. So I risked it, J-Mo lived to be 13 and he was BORN THE SAME DAY MY JESSIE DIED!

Like I said, the right dog will happen...

When things are right, you know it. My dynamic duo work together to open the door. At first I thought it a fluke. By the 3rd time I realized they knew what they were doing. Luckily it opens to fenced in yard.

that's amazing! mine were so jealous of each other-they played tricks on each other all the time, and Scarlett came up with some amazing little plots, but I don't recall them ever cooperating like that!

Sometimes I think Scarlett would have opened the door and locked that annoying boy outside if she could have!

Rita likes Beau when he can do something for her, otherwise she would lock him out! They have a love/hate relationship. They are both alpha dogs, so sometimes they disagree!

I need help!

I recently bought an orange soft satchel and she is gorgeous. I knew she had issues and this is where you guys come in. She has an ink stain that starts inside and goes outside (I'm ok with this one), she has another 2.5-3.0 inch pen mark.line on the outside, not totally ok with that. I do not want to paint her, so I used rubbing alcohol with a cotton swab and some ink came off but not all of it, worst is I lightened the leather. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76058330@N03/

She received a bath and you can clearly see that the area treated with alcohol is lighter-YIKES! She is light orange and I am thinking blackrock leather conditioner, I need your help on this one. I will paint this small area if I have to but I don't want to, help me......what should I do here any suggestions? She's drying right now but you can see how light she is in the before wash photos.

Those of you who are admiring the Madisons made in Italy, they are indeed lovely. I have one, love the size and shape of it. The seller pointed out one piece of info to me...the hardware between the strap and the bag has a tiny little screw in it. Hyacinth also confirmed this...a very nice and interesting touch.

See in this pic?

I came here to find smaller bags...all the current bags are just too big for me and I'm not into bags that slouch...except for one...my Zoe. LOL

I hope to add a few more Italian made Madison's to my collection too.

I love this bag!! Beautiful, and really good attention to detail... I can't wait to get the two I bought, I hope they are what I am hoping... like I said, I will be listing some of my other ones and collecting these...

Ok, so in rehabbing my basic bag, which I have before pictures of in my blog... I think I have found the Holy Grail of Coach early bags.
This bag is heavy, like the New York Bags, it has the Talon zipper that opens and closes like butter. Only, on this bag, the Talon zipper is brass, and the ring holding the leather to the zipper is also solid brass. So, the fading and faded nickel ring that is so common on the New York bags is gone on this bag, and the leather is amazing!! It is still drying on day two, it is thick and heavy, and it is coming out gorgeous!!
This bag has a very unusual creed, it says "Made in USA" under the creed. I have some Made in New York bags, and I have some Made in the United States bags, but this is the only bag I have that says Made in USA, and I would put forth that this bag is the one I want to find more of!! The little brass connectors for the handle are a little more rough, and they have a tiny anchor molded into them. The tag is one sided, and has the word Leatherware under where it says Coach, like on the New York bags, and the creed also has Leatherware under where it says Coach.

oh that is a great bag. I am rehabbing a red city bag that had light ink on the front flap...I very carefully applied alcohol to that area and then washed it and it did dry lighter. It needed two more baths and I tried using gel hand sanitizer over the whole flap to even it out. It's wet now so I'm not sure how it will look, I'll report back. I felt like lightening one whole section of the leather wouldn't be very noticeable.

Also keep in mind that the alcohol treatment might affect the way the bag is absorbing the water so it may be less noticeable when dry & conditioned.

Fortunately I'm not really emotionally invested in this one, I almost bought it as a rehab challenge more than anything, but yours is too cool to let go!

That is the problem with trying to remove ink, especially on a bag with any kind of vibrant color, no matter what you use it always carries the risk of discoloring the surrounding leather with the removal process. the only alternative to painting the leather with acrylic, is removing the ink the rest of the way, fading the color as much as necessary, and then taking the bag to a cobbler who is really good at dying leather and can make it all match again. You can try this yourself as well, but it is not an easy thing to do, so it would be better to call around until you find someone who knows they can do it, and I would call first, before you do anything else that might discolor it any further.
You can try darkening just the area with a moisturizer like black rocks, or EVOO (extra virgin olive oil, but it will darken maybe more than you might want, so test it first!!) but this will be a temporary solution, and will have to be redone properly whenever you moisturize the bag or when it fades again. Dye is totally permanent and cannot be removed, and acrylic is removable if you really wet it and scrub it in most cases, not in every case, sometimes it gets into the leather and cannot be removed without damaging the leather. I usually use acrylic when I have ink that I know cannot be removed. I wash the bag, remove as much as I can with alcohol and bar soap, and then paint over what is left, including anything the removal process discolored. I have three bags right now that have serious ink damage, and you would never know from looking at the bag on the outside. The ink is still visible inside. So, it all just depends on what you want to do with the bag. If you are fixing it to resell it, it would probably be worth calling a good dye expert and getting it permanently repaired, and if it is just for personal use, then acrylic is your best bet.
