Is this the bag that you bought? OMG! A light blue braided editorial zoe that originally cost $1,000! That is a gorgeous bag! May I ask how much you paid for it? I am so sorry to see that it has been treated so badly and I hope that you can restore it to beauty.

I don't have any expertise with this type of project but perhaps some of the other coachies will be able to offer some good advice. Nice find and good luck with your rehab project! KateV

I think this is called the Speedy satchel. Its a NYC era, and is red. I really would love to restore her as best I can. She is really dry even after 2 apple conditioning treatments. I originally thought I'd give her a bath, but am worried about the hairline cracking. She isn't worn through anywhere and isn't too stained, inside or out. Just dark spots which are normal in the handles, etc. Should I do something more than just Apple condition her? I've been reading the rehab threads but haven't seen one in this condition. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I don't want to cause further harm.

It might take a LOT of conditioning to get a bag so dried out back into supple condition, but I think it can be done! You may want to try a heavier conditioner than Apple for this one, many on here like Lexol (I haven't tried it, but it is on my list to get). I have used Pecards Leather Dressing with success. I think you are right about not bathing it, at least until some of the moisture and suppleness is restored! I understand Lexol has some cleaning wipes, maybe try those for the soiled areas? GL!

You might try taking it to a leather care place or a shoe repair (cobbler) shop to ask for advice or to see if they can recommend products or options.

One time it was necessary for me to give a bath to a non-Coach bag that was known to "dry up and crack" if you tried to wash it. I gave it a bath in the usual manner and then I turned it inside out and stuffed it with towels to shape it and slow the drying process.

I continued to use towels with this bag to further slow the drying. The next day I turned the bag the right way out and stuffed it with clean towels to avoid mildew. For the next two or three days I kept it right-side out but I continued stuffing it with clean towels while it dried. After a few days, when it was getting pretty dry, I stopped using the towels.

I also applied a leather oil product several times during the first few days of the drying process. It was an unlined bag so I applied the oil to both the inside and outside surfaces of the bag.

The product is called "Leather Theapy - Restorer and Conditioner" and I bought it at a local equestian, horse riding store. There is a link for the website below and it includes a store locator. I believe that you can also order it online. It was rather expensive (around $25) but I have been able to use it on lots of other bags and leather products so the price really wasn't too bad.

The oil doesn't contain dyes, perfumes, waxes, or silicones (which is a good thing) and the label says that it will NOT darken leather. It's also supposed to prevent mold and mildew which I think is important when you are trying to dry a bag very slowly to prevent cracking. It does have a faint odor, but it's not bad - more pleasant than the smell or Apple conditioner IMO - and it fades with time.

My bag came out beautifully and it didn't dry up or crack. I don't know if this technique and product will work well on your bag but I am sharing my experience in case it might work for you. You should probably "spot test" the product in a hidden spot and let it dry overnight before using it. Good luck!

Coffee&Coach recommends using a product(s) called Leather CPR. She has a lot of experience with equestrian leather care and once used it to restore a leather jacket that was "drier than beef jerky!" Here are the links to her posts:

I have a similar bag in hunter green - not as old.

I'll add my experience suggestions from past rehab projects:

I would suggest a good outer cleaning with Lexol cleaning wipes first. It looks like dirt may be worked into the cracks. Check online, tack shops, or automotive suppy stores. The wipes are not as available as the spray but easier to use.

A richer conditioner, recommended by docride in the Hermes section, is Blackrocks Leather n Rich. I find it works better than the Apple for older bags. I find it online or at a local tack ( horse riding stuff) shops.

Might try a soft toothbrush carefully to work the cleaner into the cracks to loosen the dirt. I have also used acetone (aka nail polish remover) to remove stubborn stains BUT test an area first to see how much color is removed

I seriously need some of this.

I know ink stains in the lining have come up before, but I was hoping for some more specific input about a troublesome bag. Can I ask a question in this (great) thread if the bag isn't a coach? (It is a Furla - as those show up more often used in the UK than Coach - not that I don't kept trying :-)

thanks y'all. I'm going to look into the equestrian grade products, etc. I want to wash her, but am afraid with the cracking what will happen in water. It just seems cleaner if you can give them a bath ;) I"ll let you know how it goes whenever I feel confident enough to tackle her again.

sorry, messed up my link.....

Beautiful bag!!

Hello, I just washed a beautiful old burnt orange leather Coach purse and it looked wonderful - until I put Apple conditioner on it two days ago - now it looks dreadful - almost as if it's been dyed - you can see dark swirl marks where I was rubbing the conditioner into the leather. Will this fade with time, or should I wash and soak the purse again and try to get hold of some Lexol?. Thanks in advance for your help, ladies. I enjoy lurking and looking at the photos of all the purses you have rehabed!:)
