You rock, @K.E.W. !!!

Yeah, I pre-ordered a $700 Gotham Tote last summer. I didn't realize that the charge sits on your card as a pending charge until the order placed. It was only a few weeks until the bag came into stock, but it still felt weird just having that lingering around. I pay off my card(s) every month, and I wanted to pay it but couldn't since the charge wasn't actually there.
Sure you can. Just pay the amount including the pending charge, the credit card is not going to send the money back. It will just be credited to your card. If the item doesn't ship or you cancel your order then you just have credit on there until you use it up. I have done that numerous times, but of course the your credit card may be different than mine.

Oh this is helpful! I could "overpay" even though the pending charge only deducts from my available credit (and not on the actual card's balance). I always felt a little weird paying something off that I don't have in my hands yet, lol!

Yes, I have done what Suzanne B says, as well. And if you do end up canceling order or returning and having that "overpayment" on there, you can contact your credit card company to issue you a cheque (or leave it on there as sort of a pre-payment for other future purchases). It is not necessary to do since it is not owing yet, but if you need or want the room on your card then this is a way to get that :)

I know the charge is coming so I've never thought much about 'pre-paying'. Just as with anything else, it works for some people, but others don't like doing it.

I am learning so much! Y'all rock. I'm always careful with credit because I don't want to be hooked on using it. I use my credit cards like a debit card and pay the balance at the end of each month, solely so that I can keep up a rockstar credit rating. I've actually declined higher limits that were pitched to me because I don't foresee myself ever needing to use something absurd like $25k in credit.

That is a very good practice. I do have higher limits when I total all my credit together (as long as your use of it is low, then your credit rating can remain high, or even higher as it goes to the percentage of usage...i.e. $500 on $1,000 limit is high at 50% usage, but $500 on $10,000 limit is low at 5% usage) but we don't carry balances either. We just put everything we can on them initially so we can get the points/cash back. There are definitely good ways to use credit, where you never pay interest but take advantage of rewards and purchase protection, and not-so-good ways to use it.

Sorry to get your hopes up -- it was just a way of showing my enthusiasm. I forgot who, but someone recently PM'd me that her SA told her that it IS available for preorder, but I wasn't interested in shelling out 1K too far in advance (Coach will have my money while I sit and wait? No thanks!) Is the style number only known to SA's?

I hope there won't be a shortage -- seems EVERYONE wants that Tote! Wish I could help you, I don't even work with an SA.
They don't charge your card until the bag ships.

Very smart of you! Like my mother would say "credit cards can be the work of the devil." Lol....she didn't believe in buying something you didn't have the money for. We would tell her you can pay off your card every month, and she'd say..."just buy it then."

Mothers are usually good with those philosophies that are timeless.

When it comes to "luxury" items (non necessary indulgences), I only use my debit card so that I'm essentially buying it on the spot in real live time (what your mother suggested)...I'm paying cash and will never see a forthcoming bill for it. I pride myself on that discipline. Having said that, just because I was able to pay cash does not mean it was a wise or frugal choice, if you get my drift. :giggle:

PS -- I'm also not comfortable with anything that is NOT in LIVE time -- I won't do Pre-Orders, Back Orders, etc., which is why I won't Pre-Order the Rexy Tote, even if it's in the Pending status and not actually deducted yet.

My mom was very good with money plus she didn't like to buy anything unless it was useful. Us 6 kids used to beg her to buy things for herself and she'd say, I don't need that. Funny woman. I've never done a pre order either. I've always figured if I still want it when it comes out I can get it then.

And good for you being disciplined, you'll never regret that.
