Interesting that the Merlot is back again, this morning. I considered purchasing one yesterday, but then realized how much I love the one I have in Dark Navy, and also how very large it is, making multiple purchases of it ill-advised due to storage constraints. I already have a significant collection of bags occupying my closet. So, as much as I would love to have an Empire 40 in Merlot and another one in Maple, I will just have to content myself with the Dark Navy one I have, and am using daily. It truly is a great bag.

If you purchased one in Merlot, I hope you love it!

I ended up taking the navy back yesterday. The stitching was perfect but when I took it outside to see if I could see any burnishing. I didn't see any burnishing but I did see two hazy white spots. One the size of a quarter and then one the size of a button like some sort of product had dripped one it or something. Not sure if the color just didn't absorb in those spots but it made the decision to take it back easier. We'll see if it's instant love when I get the merlot. My husband asked what if it's not? Back to the drawing board? Who knows. Ha. 😂
Haha I love your husband’s reply, “what if it’s not?” Honestly the color really is breathtaking. The burnishing is really noticeable on it, which is also what I think has me in love.

The one I exchanged for had an issue with some white marks on the glazing, it seemed every Merlot in store had some sort of issue, but I loved the color so much I just picked the best option. I was able to use some of their leather conditioner and remove most of the marks. The bag has a 1 year warranty, so at this point I just decided to be glad I got the color I wanted and try to keep my OCD at bay LOL.

I’m going to have a serious impulse control problem when the 48 Merlot comes back in stock. I love the size, but I think the burnishing is more noticeable on the 40 due to its smaller size. Like others have said, these are large bags..I don’t know how I’d store two 48s and a 40 lol

Y’all my saga continues.

Checked the status of my order and it shows as backordered. Did online chat with a rep and this is what she said.

She did give me phone numbers for locations that showed they had stock and I’m not sure how my phone is not a fireball. Managed to get a hold of a store that’s having one delivered tomorrow and it’s mine! So they’ll ship it to me once they get it. If anybody else is hunting for it let me know and I can send you the other locations.

There's a Merlot restock online for the size 48 and 40! Also looks like they have Maple in 48 as well!

A rep told me they didn't expect to restock the 48s until 3/3, I hope these are for real. I am so tempted to get the 48 in Merlot...but it just doesn't make senses to end up having 2 48s and a 40 lol

I wonder if that is the end of the 48 run, I thought I read somewhere that they were limited in this oversized/runway version.
I thought this too, the other day a rep told me they were only going to be making black in the 48 and slowly phasing it out since they didn't expect the bag to be so popular and it's a lot of space/logistics/materials to make.

I guess when the bag first launched they had a size 48 in Honey brown that was hand distressed in their NYC workshop. I believe only about 50 were made a were only sold in select boutiques for $1,700. Those went viral on social media and then the other colors launched with the faux distressing at $895. Ever since then they have had trouble keeping up with demand, but it seems like they don't really have any idea about the future of this bag

I wonder if this will make the non black colors of this bag i.e. merlot or honey brown in the 48 as collectors items someday. It's such a friendly price point for so much gorgeous leather and a timeless design. I'm tempted to get the larger one for my travel bag on top of my rolling suitcase. I think way too big for my everyday bag, but for travel or work here and there, maybe.
