Coach doesn’t want to encourage your business

Especially 20-something women...Coach, in general, is not a cool brand to that demographic. The young 20-somethings fashion forward women I work with do not carry Coach. They carry Celine or Balenciaga...or completely unknown, nameless brands.

I guess this could be true for the majority of this demographic, but a lot of people, (myself included) do carry LV, Prada, Balenciaga, etc. in addition to Coach.

Coach is something I can buy pretty much whenever I feel like it, and the premier brands are more of a once in a while type purchase. I have a huge collection of Coach leather bags & then a smaller collection of premier bags. The fact that I have premier bags doesn't mean I love my Coach bags any less, in fact I think I love them more!

I don't blame Coach for trying to expand their customer base and attract new clients but it is foolish to do so through by ignoring their core business. We have seen many different sales techniques coming from Coach over the years and I predict that they will be back to courting the favor of dedicated customers just as soon as their profit margin drops significantly. They have new leadership on board so I suppose they insist on discovering the obvious all over again!

Thanks again for all the responses.

As rude and stupid as this SA's comments were, I can't help but feel there is a grain of truth in them. The refusal of Coach to make plus sizes (hello, Abercrombie & Fitch!), the fixation on the fashion forward whatevers, FOS games, etc.

I purchase mainly at the outlet and mainly FP deletes. NEVER have gotten a PCE except the FB ones, not hey you didn't get it THIS time, NEVER. The SA at the FP where I have purchased a few items: the dragonfly duffle, the studded Legacy duffle in black, are recent examples, always says I will call you when there is PCE, but she never has. Not once.

I am embarrassed to say I have spent $1000s with Coach-- $1000s. I've cut my purchases a lot lately. This last experience and the decline in quality I am seeing will mean further cuts.

I repeat my hope that Coach succeeds with it's new "maybe-we will get them customers" instead of its "hey we already have them customers" philosophy.

They are really going to have to win me back in.

Several people here have offered their PCEs in the future. The word I've gotten is they are not transferable. But we will see. Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it and will keep you in mind,

all i can say it is their loss as you might stop shopping with them all together. and SA was rude. what the heck?

i do have to say i get PCEs every time, i am 48. i never buy FP bags (unless deletes on FOS), I only buy tiny things like key fobs, some jewerly and small gifts for people. i only buy bags in outlets or FOS or other discount stores and i get PCEs all the time, i recently got one for 30%. and now have one for 25% just few weeks later.

i do not buy their clothes, i did buy some shoes but in DSW not in Coach store. and i am not fashion forward. i buy conservative stuff, i buy for my DD sometimes who is 26 but she also is rather conservative, plus i buy on FOS for her not FP store.

why the heck they give you this story??? i am in MI by the way too

Unfortunately, it looks like with their margin dropping, Coach tends to go for the "innovative" (i.e., potentially stupid) solutions, rather than building their customer base the secure way. Let's hope they'll finally learn a lesson or two though!

A bit of a long story, but I want to show the setting, please bear with me)

I went to pick up my daughter at her school and had a rare opportunity to visit a FP store this one at the mall in Grandville,MI. I planned to visit Macy’s, I didn’t even know there was a FP there. I really wanted to see the Borough bag in person.

Of course we took the opportunity to look at other items we liked. I was carrying my FP Madison shoulder bag. Dd also had a small FP Coach. As the SA showed me items, I mentioned that I had this or that (several Phoebes, etc…)

DD found a mini skinny she liked, but I thought $38.00 for a coated canvas mini skinny was more than I wanted to pay, especially since I know there was JUST a PCE that expired. I mentioned the PCE, and the SA said there’s one coming out the 7th. I said it won’t matter because I never get them anyway, so she pulled me up on the computer and verified my information.

I then mentioned that I never get PCE. But I seldom buy FP because I don’t live near one. I said that if they sent me PCEs I might chance mail ordering more. I also said I wished they made plus size clothing because I’d love to buy those items (and would).

Then the amazing comment: Coach PCE and other decisions come from corporate (yep, knew that). You don’t get PCE because Coach corporate is trying to move in the direction of the young, hip, fashion forward customer who carries Prada. They want to encourage their business.

I said well, I guess they are pushing away their loyal customers. (That means not the 50+ fat lady who is not fashion forward.)
Oh that’s surely not the intent, she replied. EXCUSE ME you just said in almost so many words, “They don’t want to encourage your business.” Sounds pretty clear to me.

Needless to say we left without the mini skinny and without the Borough. It will be a long day before I am back.

signed not FF lady who doesn't carry Prada. And I'm pretty sure I will NEVER get PCE.

added: I hope that FF Prada lady spends a lot at Coach!

I think the SA was misinformed because I receive PCE's quite often an I'm no where near twenty anymore. There were usually reserved for those people who buy a lot. Also the SA can invite their preferred customers. If you get one and want to continue to get them you must buy with the invite that signals to the company that the PCE works and draws in buyers

lizmil,
Sorry you had to go through that and with your daughter present. SA should have used more tact. I have not been into a coach full price store in ages because of the attitude they have.
Lately, I am buying Michael Kors and Kate Spade. I find I don't get penalized for spending money on these designers like I did with coach. Coach says, you buy too many bags, therefore we cannot invite you to buy more bags, how insane is this? I don't care for the games and nonsense with coach anymore, so I just buy other designer bags and if I do see a coach bag I like, I either get it on sale at Macys or get it at the coach outlet.
Coach stop sending me invites to the factory sales and don't send me pce anymore. That's ok, coach doesn't want my money I guess. I do occasionally stop at the outlets when I am near one in my travels but don't get as many coach bags as I did in the past.
I am happy with my coach collection and don't let their nonsense get to me. I just move on to another brand.

Fashion-forward young women in their 20s, usually means they live with their parents and are broke. lol. Though there are young women with good jobs but nationwide even worldwide that is not the case, esp with newly grad students.

Moments like these when the world treats aging women as a sickness, I think of the scene from Fried Green Tomatoes when Kathy Bates rammed her big car at the VW and said "Let's face girls, I'm older and I have more insurance!"

Remember this: it is none of your business what other people think of you.

That includes one stupid SA & Coach corporate. I'd be damned if I'd let one minimum wage sales girl make me think I was anything less than fabulous, even if I were old, fat, & in sweats.

Coach cares about nothing other than money. They are a business. Who cares if you never get a PCE, everything ends up on clearance at the outlets or another retailer. Everything. With just a little patience, you can get the items you want at a better price and get it without someone's snotty attitude.

So, as someone else said: don't let her ruin your swagger!
First of all I want to say that it is sad that you will believe anything you read on here. lizmil could have misunderstood the SA, or maybe she didn't. Who know? However, if the SA did say that, I will agree that it was probably better left unsaid.

Coach knows they are not a premier brand. Of course they are about business. What company isn't? But to say that they care about nothing other than money is a bit extreme. No, make that a lot extreme. They have great customer service. Are they trying to get you to buy something? ABSOLUTELY. What SA isn't? But they also want YOU to be happy. Maybe the SA lizmil had an encounter with handled the situation poorly; maybe she misinformed her.

Coach is going in a new direction. They hired a new creative director for heaven's sake. That doesn't mean they want to completely change their customer base. They want to broaden it, what company doesn't? But of course you are not going to get PCE if you never shop there. It's called PREFERRED customer event for a reason.

xx

Yep lucydee, that's what I gotta do too.

Yes, I would move on as well, and get the bags from another store that appreciates your business! Or you can buy Coach at the department stores, and even possibly save some $$! With the large patchwork , and the Bleecker Preston that I have just purchased, they're actually just my 2nd and 3rd Coach.

Seven years ago, when I was living in another state, I had non-too-stellar service from the SA's, who treated me like a broke teenager; unfortunately, I look young, and I like to dress comfortably. Needless to say, I bought only small accessories like keyfobs, and planners, and my acquisitions were few and far between at that time; I moved on to premier designers like Balenciaga, Dior, Ferragamo, Lanvin, Prada, and YSL (currently just Saint Laurent). Then I moved to NYC for three years after that, where the service was professional, but never more than that.

This year, I am in the north, and have an easily accessible FP store that I frequent. Before, I thought the styles are cute/interesting, but at the end of the day, not stuff that I would actually wear; this year, on the other hand, Coach really impressed me with their ready-to-wear, shoes, and bags. Granted, I now buy one or two items a month, and sometimes large-ticket items as well; however, the SA's here literally bend over backwards to service me, like you won't believe. I even get personal calls/emails about upcoming PCE's, and thank you notes for my recent purchases. And no, I don't wear my Pradas in the store. I wonder if this change in attitude has to do with different stores, the location, or whether Coach is trying to achieve a new image as a brand. Probably a mixture of both.

But anyway, maybe let this incident reconsider your love, and try to see if you want to branch off elsewhere, or buy the bags from another source?
