Hello,
I hope I am in the right place, I am new too the forum so apologies if in wrong thread.

I have been given a used Mulberry Hayden tote in Oak (I think!).
It has darkening to the handles and general grubbyness to leather.
This has been used a lot so the leather is thinning in places.

How do I clean the leather? What is the process and products?
How do I take care of the leather generally?

Any advice much appreciated as love the bag and want to bring it near its former glory!!

Hello, welcome to the forum, i was a newbie a couple of months ago and i read through this thread and it helped me so much! i advise collonil suede cleaner for the grubby suede bits ( mine was grubby inside the flap) and collonil spray to keep the outside clean, and ive also got some colloil leather cream type stuff which cleans the bag and brightens it :D you can find all these on ebay which i found was easiest to find them. It might be useful for certain stains to have a look through the first few pages of this thread i found they helped me most :D i think the suede cleaner was the best on the suede, as that was grubbiest, and the water stop spray helps to avoid future stains :D hope this helps a little :)

Hello, Thank you so much for all your advice! Very helpful, finally know what to do! Many thank;)

Hello,
I posted this week about cleaning a pre-owned Hayden Tote in oak. melanie789611 very kindly gave me some advice but after reading all the pages of the thread I am now a little confused!

Would like to clarify before trying anything as the bag mainly just needs a light clean and mainly on handles.

So to clarify am I supposed to spray the collonil waterstop first before applying anything else for cleaning?

For this leather( Hayden lamb I think?) is it the collonil soft cleaner cream or the collonil gel?
Ideally do not want to darken the leather.

Any help de-mystifying much appreciated!:smile1:

i dont think it hurts to spray the waterstop first, but most do, however when i was cleaning mine i didnt spray it first, just afterwards.

links below :)

the gel i bought, this is neutral, i bought a pink one as my bag is pink, the neutral is the most recommended though.

I wouldn’t use the Collonil waterstop stop first if it’s dirty. This spray is for protecting so you could seal in the dirt and make it more difficult to clean. Clean up the bag then spray with Collonil waterstop regularly as it makes it resistant to stains as well as water

I use it regularly on all my bags and they have stayed very clean. A bag liner also makes loads of difference to keeping the inside clean. It also makes it so easy to change bags. I couldn’t do without one.

Thank you so much for clarifying that for me, will try the clean today! Bag liners are wonderful aren't they, organize the chaos!:smile1:

Hi
Have just bought my very first Mulberry - Oak Phoebe - and want to keep her looking lovely inside and out. Can anyone suggest a good handbag liner to get? Also, what would be best to treat her with - she already has a lovely patina and has darkened nicely.

Hope someone can help - thanks!

Might I just say, what a fantastic resource TPF is -totally incredible!!:D

Hi all,

I'm a newbie, but looking through these helpful posts has prompted me to ask for some clarification before I launch a DIY cleaning mission!

I have a much loved 2 and a half year old Somerset Tote in Oak. I've probably used it pretty much everyday, and living in Manchester have been wearing my thick black coat everyday too. So, unfortunately, there is some dye transfer and discolouration on the side of the bag. I've seen some suggestions including baby wipes and gel cleaner. I'm going to try babywipes this evening, and then buy some gel cleaner if needs be. Is this the type of thing I should be looking at using? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collonil-Leather-Gel-recommended-Mulberry/dp/B003XNB14K

I did colonil waterstop spray it when I first got it, but should really have done it more regularly. Just want to get it back to a nice condition and then take better care of it.

I spoke to the furniture clinic, but at £150 that's just waaaay more than I can afford being a lowly intern!!

Any help much appreciated!

The Tintamar liners are really great.

They are quite pricey but worth it & come in lots of lovely colours. I have tried other liners which can be rather stiff and make it difficult to get into your bag.

Tintamar are very flexible whilst still give good shape to your bag. They are also machine washable & dry over night.;)

Hi - thanks for your advice; they look really good and in a lovely selection of fabrics as you said. I've just received a "Baggitz" liner this morning which I think should be pretty good. I've just stuffed it with all of my handbag things and it seems to have a good shape and capacity.
Time will tell....

Thanks again

Can anyone recommend a good online service where you can send a bag to be cleaned.

I have a bag where the exterior is showing grubbiness from what i think is ingrained dirt & it’s lost it’s magic.

The Handbag Spa Limited shows some great before & afters but don’t feel I want to trust it to anyone without a recommendation. I have also emailed them and never had a reply so am a bit wary.

No idea about sending bags away, but have you tried Lord Sheraton leather wipes? They are great for getting rid of grubbiness and bringing shine back.

I second these wipes ^ perhaps worth giving a try first. I bought them from a supermarket & use them for my sofa too. But there have been threads on here of bags restored to there formal glory. Can't remember off the top of my head who. But I'm sure someone with experience will be along soon.
