Cleaning and Protecting the OUTSIDE of your BV

I've been reading the care threads and there seems to a split between the treat/don't treat camps. I bought my first BV yesterday (maxi hobo, i think color is called signal blue) and the SA was explicit that i shouldn't treat it with anything. I generally do treat my new bags, but I'm not going to treat this one, at least not right away. Meanwhile I'll be keeping tabs on the advice in this thread.

I just got my first BV bag. The instructions says not to wet, not to use any sprays on it. I am confused! How do you clean the bag and protect the leather??

Same question here. Do we used anything to protect it?

BV leather, in my opinion, is of a quality that you do not need to treat it. I have never treated any of my BV items. Pay attention to your SA, they know what they are talking about.

Thanks, India! I'll leave my bag untreated and let it evolve naturally. This reminds me of my hair stylists advice that if I shampoo less often my curly hair would look better. Wait, wash less...huh? But i tried it and he was right! Sometimes the counterintuitive advice is the best advice.

Thank you. I have def followed and not treated at all. Such a soft lovely bag. I need a matching or a BV wallet now. lol. I am truly enjoying this beauty.

I have never treated any of my bags. I did take my black cabat to be "renewed" several years ago. It wasn't in bad shape - just didn't look new any more. But it came back looking new! I think that's the only "treatment" these beauties ever need!

Hey indiaink - you were kind enough to authenticate my BV purchase on the forum recently -http://www.ebay.com/itm/CLASSIC-BOTTEGA-VENETA-LEATHER-DRAWSTRING-BUCKET-BAG-IVORY-CREAM-GOLD-HARDWARE-/351359463218?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=yZfnJPD4mlj0pjNKimzEx1LVEkc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I got the bag at a great price - just $100 (and I only ended up paying $50 out of pocket because I had gotten a gift card for my b'day from my sis:smile1:). The bag arrived on Saturday and is not as pristine as the listing nor pics make it out to be - the lining is a bit dirty, the inner pocket is COVERED in ink marks, and the bottom is rubbed and dirty. I love the style, the price for the hot-style bucket was fab, and I know that lighter colors won't stay pristine forever. My dilemma is whether to keep the bag or send for cleaning. Since I didn't purchase at BV I don't know if I could bring it there. I used Rago Brothers in the past for cleaning the inside of a Chanel bag and they did a fab job but charged $55. Does it make sense to pay that on a BV? I was trying to justify it as saying I had could have paid that money upfront for the bag if I didn't have the gift card but would appreciate some advice - thanks in advance, as always!:smile1:

Unless you are deeply in love with this bag, I would return it as SNAD - . There is no way to remove ink from leather. You could send the pics to Modern Leather and get a quote on repairs/cleaning, but - like I said, send this back unless you are in love with it. Modern Leather is here: http://www.modernleathergoods.com/

Thanks so much! The ink is only on the inside pocket as shown in the pic I attached. The suede is bit dirty, but the issue on the leather is mostly rubs though there is a bit of dirt.
I am waiting to hear from the seller as well as Rago brothers, who I used for the Chanel bag liner cleaning. I just don't like the fact that the seller didn't take pictures of the inside pocket lining which is horrible. The bummer is that I lost out on another bag because of this purchase -:sad:

UPDATE-Am returning the bag-the one I missed out on (a Chloe Aurore Bucket Bag w/cosmetic pouch - think Mansur Garviel) came up again for sale so I grabbed that one even though it was more $$- I liked the BV but just too much to deal with -

Dear all:
I have just bought a preloved white BV tote and stop short of sending it to Modern Leather for a spa treatment, I would like to see if there is ANYTHING I can do at my end :sweat drop: .. There is wear (as per picture) all around. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

::whoosh:: You don't want to mess with this - I'd send it to Modern Leather (after you follow their instructions to get a quote and all that). With it being white leather, there's a big risk you could make any issues worse...

I'm also following this thread with interest - please keep the info coming, especially if any of you do use Modern Leather services. Do all the BV stores do the spa treatment, then? I wonder what products they use, as it doesn't seem that they recommend anything, in contrast to some other companies like Mulberry who specifically advise that you buy a particular product (Collonil, in their case) for pre-treatment for rain protection. Do BVs come with a leather care card?
