I don't know how any of these protectant products compare to one another, but I believe I've read on other tpf threads that saddle soap can actually be harmful to purse leathers. The skins and dyes are not the same as what is used on real saddles, so I wouldn't advise saddle soap.

I posted above after carrying my White Grommet Veneta for about a month about how soft and scrumptious it was getting. Now I can say that I've been carrying my Crimson Veneta for about a month and I would say the very same thing -- it gets softer and more scrumptious every day! The color is even beginning to develop a depth and warmth I don't think it had at first. I would never want to put anything on it that would interfere with its natural, beautiful, aging process.

Thanks for starting this thread Jburgh. Im really keen on reading what every one has to say so Ill start with a question, since I dont have any solution/experiences yet:)

I just got my first Bottega. Its white and I am worried about dirtying it. Following Jburghs advice I called Nicole at Atlanta boutique and she adviced me to treat the bag with Meltonian water and stain protector. Here is a link to the product Jburgh sent me

http://www.cedarshoetree.com/shop/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=14&products_id=58

I havent used it yet, just ordered it. Any experiences with this product. What is the difference between Meltonian brand and Appleguard? Does one work better on a particular type of leather compared to the other? Any helpful experiences? Thanks!

I own several hobos and am keen on obtaining a product to maintain the leather, anyone plse help & share your experiences utilising Meltonian brand and Appleguard, thanx!

I've tried both the Meltonian Water & Stain protector and the Apple Garde Rain & Stain Repellent. My observation:

They both have a strong chemical scent when you spray them on the exterior of the bags ( tried them on all my BVs, nappa and the goat skin specchio ). No remarkable change on the leather. Though I'm not brave enough to try and do any water testing. I was more concerned if it will darken the leather, it did not.

Interior - Apple Garde, the suede interior of the bag slightly darkened.
- Meltonian, no change.

Exterior - Apple Garde, the leather glistened with the spray after application. Left to stand for 12 hrs., i buffed with a buffing cloth. Looks same as before application.
- Meltonian, the leather appeared to have a slight whitish film after spray application but after 12 hrs. and buffing this also disappeared. Looks same as before application.

Test Subject: for Meltonian - Intrecciato Tote, Copper East West Belly, Veneta Ash Scuro
for Apple Garde - Large Campana Ebano, Balenciaga City 09/ Part Time 09

As a "newbie" to purse forum, I have read all the postings above on care of BV bags but still not quite sure what to do. I have my first BV veneta in Ivory on the way. Plan on taking it on anniversary trip to Hawaii so stain protection essential. Should I let it age naturally? Don't chance the risk of stains? What to do? Want to take good care of my "precious".

newbags, I would follow beth001's advice! I have never treated any leather bag I own and wear them in rain, snow and sunshine. I am pursuing a BV bag now and have no intentions at all in treating it when I get it. If your bag should get wet I would pat it dry. Stuff it with the dustbag and let it dry naturally, not next to a radiator or heat. Sight unseen I believe beth's answer to be 100% legit! If I were to heaven forbid get a stain, I would immediately run to my BV boutique and let them handle it as well. Something tells me these BV's live up to their cost and are made quite strong. I own the wallet and every time I take it out I find I can't stop rubbing it. Crazy! It keeps softening. Absolutely love it!!!

Hello, newbags4me, welcome to tPF and the BV sub! and congratulations on your ivory veneta!!

If it were me, I'd spray with water & stain protector so that I could enjoy my bag without too much worrying, and it would age beautifully without looking soiled too quickly, especially for lighter colours.

Enjoy your precious!!

a SA at BV in Venice told me to use nivea cream to condition the BV leather, and it really works on my old wallet cream colored wallet . . . but I have to admit that the wallet is about 5 years old now and very dirty because I haven't found anything to clean it.

I treated my Orchid Maxi Veneta with Apple Guarde Rain & Stain inside and out and I was very pleased with the results! I applied two coats to each side of the bag after letting it dry thoroughly in between each and sprayed the interior once. I did not notice any real color or texture changes to the leather, seemed as good as new once it dried. I guess only time will really tell how well it helps and holds up!

Hi girls I just got myself a superlight origami hobo in yolk and I was wondering if anyone had any idea if applegarde would work just as well? I use applegarde for my bals and my chanels but the superlight seems to be made of lambskin that's been treated differently (it looks and feels way more fragile and susceptible to stains!!!) so I'm not sure if applegarde might work differently on it compared to the usual wovens? Does anyone know? TIA!!

Personally I wouldn't use any product that contains silicone or silicates or any form of plastic. I don't know about Applegarde.

I am on my second bottegat venata black hobo. I had my first one for almost three years - and it had a lot of wear on the bottom edges. Just got my second one last december -- and was resolved to be very careful with it. But still on the bottom corners there are worn edges. A little polish camoflouges it -- but I'm wondering what if there is anything i can put on those bottom edges that will protect them?

I think all you can do to protect the corners is be careful not to scrape or bump them. I have some worn braiding on the corner of my maxi veneta, but it doesn't bother me as long as the color doesn't wear off.

So this goes for the Cervo Hobo but I have just treated mine with Collonil premium lotion followed by a hearty spray of Collonil Nanopro for some serious snow and waterproofing, and it looks promising. The lotion even brightened up the colour a bit and gave the leather a moisturized look, although it was looking bright and moisturized enough as it was. The waterproofing spray is working its magic and I want apply one or two more coats before going outdoors but I do belive it is going to work.

I did consult with BV before taking this serious step. They recommended Melatonian cream and Scotch Guard but also said if Collonil is recommended by the likes of Mulberry, they believe it is fine to use. I will report back in a while when I have tested it out in the harshest of conditions.

Just in case, a "disclaimer" - this only applies to the cervo hobo. I have received no such recommendations to any other leather types regarding this issue.
