Haven't tried Laundress yet but it is so popular here have to give it a try. Just searched and it now comes unscented and there is a local supplier.

I had already written the following in another thread, but here it goes again: I always read that many of you use The Laundress. Just a tiny warning: Even the silk detergent contains enzymes. Enzymes kill the silk proteins. I live in Germany and use Perwoll (the light pink one, wool and silk detergent, woolite might be quite similar), it doesn't contain any enzymes that damage silk, and it doesn't even contain some kind of wool softener (forgot the name) that would damage silk. (baby shampoo isn't that great either, it has softeners that damage silk).

I wonder if anyone has washed the scarf I have and could offer advice please ?
It is Les Coupes in Orange/grey/black/white. I know this scarf was made in 1970-78 and I heard this era used dyes that can run....the colourway also seems pretty high risk. This is an image of it for reference:

It has quite a lot of makeup marks on it and some faint red/orange marks which may be transfer from the orange parts of the scarf...not sure. I thought perhaps I should rub a wet cotton bud on the various colours to test the colourfastness. Is this recommended ?
Thank you

Dear juliamike

The colourcatchers are made by a company in the UK called Dylon but I'm not sure if these are sold internationally. However I'm sure there is an equivalent available normally found in the stain treatment section of the washing products in supermarket/hardwarestore or haberdashery.

Basically they are a little white cloth that trap any free range loose dye in the washing water. I had a scarf that was a real 'runner' and even after a short little wash the cloth had gone from white to bright blue. I normally pop a couple of these in the wash just to make sure.

After a while you know what scarves are either colour secure or prone to loosing colour.

Good luck if you decide to take the handwashing leap.

Glad that the washing tips are coming in handy for you HS lovers.

Best wishes

fleursetcarlines.
I wonder if these colourcatches actually "suck" colour out of so they just soak up colour that would have come out anyway ?

I've washed a few of my Hermes scarves in cold water and they came out OK. I used Shout to remove stains followed by Woolite, which is very gentle. I've also sent them for dry cleaning, and with a few exceptions (flatten hems) they did a good job.

Oh no!!! Don't rub a cotton bud on it as you will definitely get a hole!!!! It happened to me when I cleaned my one and only vintage scarf (see earlier posts) and thought along the same lines as you. That aside, in spite of being old and having rich colours it washed very well with no colour run.

I ended up washing my les coupes carre (in orange/black/grey/white). I washed it in cold water & wool/delicates wash with colour catchers. Some colour came out on the wash water, but rinse water was clear. I followed instructions on this thread and it appears to be all good so far ! No transfer and it will s drying flat on a towel. Not all marks came out, so i will not iron it this time. Now i would like to know how to fold it to get the original fold marks back. It is the largest size of carre...is there a diagram to show how to do this please ?

Just for the record...my first scarf was a gift and I was totally ignorant of the cachet of Hermes, but I thought the scarf was pretty. It was a vivid Fantaisies Indiennes in scarlet and peacock blue. I wore it a LOT, and after a while it really needed cleaning. I just washed it by hand in luke warm, not hot water, and used Johnsons baby shampoo. It came out beautifully, not a bit of run and kept its gloss. Not advocating this, just saying the silk twills are tougher than you might think.

Quick update from me. Just got a nice new Samsung ecobubble washing machine with the honeycomb drum. Must have dropped some food down a CSGM (ex L en K) so popped it in machine with cashmere shampoo & colour catcher on 20 deg wash, no spin - came out perfectly. Colour catcher had no colour but was a bit grubby looking, seem to recall that they also catch the dirt so help keep water clean IYSWIM?

Going to try a 90 silk from 2000 tomorrow.

I hand wash my scarves using a small amount of detergent ( no particular kind ) and then several cold rinses. Then roll in a towel and drape over something wide ( not narrow like an airer ). A banister on my landing is ideal for the job and they dry quite quickly so it's not unsightly for long - if an H can be unsightly!
Here are a couple of mine having a soak

Wow you are brave to do that, so glad it was successful!
I have had colour run on 2 CSGMs when washing them carefully , tepid hand wash and all that .
The black pattern on the border of a Femme shawl bled slightly .In fact it doesn't bother me., but the limpness that comes after 3 0r 4 washes is more bothersome but maybe is unavoidable with well used shawls .

More lazy than brave I think! New machine is all techy & works everything out by itself [emoji16] The 90 came out ok too, I am starting to think it's the temp / detergent / colour catcher combo that's important.
