CITES, travel and exotics

Hi, I've been lurking and reading all about CITES for exotics and this had me wondered; if I travel with a mini exotic bags tucked in to my carry-on luggage, would it be a problem still? (not visibly wearing it nad have it packed in my cabin luggage)

I'm thinking of getting a secondhand Fendi micro peekaboo made out of phyton but the consignment I'm dealing with doesn't have the CITES for it. I feel it's kinda unwise to get the bag, but I really looove the color/size of it.

Thanks in advance!
And just to add- note this was NOT exotics but still applicable to your situation.
When returning to the US yesterday, as I declared at Customs, the officer asked if the bag I was using was my "regular" bag I had brought with me ( 2009 K32- in great shape but obviously not new). He then casually asked if he could look inside and get the receipts for the items I had purchased this trip. Long story short, he made sure it WAS my old bag, and took a quick but measured look at my calvis, a card case ( which randomly has a touch of lizard on it, which he passed over and yes, I have the photo of the certificate on my phone)that I had in it. Had I had any exotic tucked away, he certainly would have found it.
Could he have taken a peek inside anything else? Sure- they are allowed to, whether or not you want them to.

Interesting. Which airport was this?

I've tried searching in this thread but seems like my situation has not come up so far; please correct me if I'm wrong.

I bought an item remotely through a reputable Paris auction, and was originally told they have the original CITES. But now the shipping partner is telling me that they need to store the bag for six months so they can issue me a new CITES certificate (and is charging me for it). The auction house now says that that's the rule, as CITES is personal. Does that make any sense? Am I missing some critical understanding here? Is it because I'm buying this commercially from an auction house so it's a "new export" and the original CITES certificate doesn't suffice?

An Hermès item? The original CITES is tied to the actual skin used and you should not need a new one. This does, though, depend upon the country to which you wish to ship the item, and it might be an import permit, not a CITES, that the shipper is trying to get (esp if you are in Australia, which is very strict). Did the auction house give you or at least show you the original CITES?

They said they have it. I haven’t seen a picture of it. Trying to get it shipped from France to the US.

Is there some regulation you can please point me to so I can forward to them? I can’t seem to find any language justifying why I’d need a new CITES certificate - or anything would necessitate a six month storage in Paris

You don't need a CITES if it is for your own personal use. If you love the bag, and the price is right, go for it. You don't need it to travel as long as you hand-carry it and it's visibly being used for your own personal needs. But no, Hermès will not do the work and pay the fees to get you a new CITES, you'll have to do that yourself in your countries CITES department, and it is expensive and takes long, and theres no guarantee. But it doesn't mean you cannot use, love, and even sell the bag later on.
Responding to this old thread to ask your experience. As noted above, I bought a bag from an auction house and am now told it needs to go through Cites again. Is this what you were referring to? I have to imagine that most resellers aren’t going through the process of getting new cites for every resale? I was really surprised to learn this

This does depend on the appendix the skin falls into. If it's not Appendix II that may be the issue.
Impossible to advise without knowing the item, age, and skin.

If it's Appendix II you could just ask someone to hand-carry it over for you. Personal effects under appendix II don't even need CITES.

Do you know if Hermes lizard bags are included in Appendix II? Would appreciate any insight!

I just saw this official video from US fish and wildlife service and they say CITES certificates are not renewable.

So here is my question: So it doesn't really matter if a preloved bag comes or doesn't come with a CITES certificate (in the US) because you won't be able to renew it anyways because they expire after 6 months? So it's good as "No CITES certificate" in a way.

Also I read somewhere on their website that you might need to present some Paperworks (maybe for initial application? or renewal if that's possible) like "chain of ownership". So if I buy from the preloved market, there is no way the consignment store will give any such documentation.

Anyone with an actual experience who was successful securing a CITES certificate from a bag purchased preloved?

Background: I'm currently exploring the preloved market for exotic pcs.

Per my post above, the shipping partner for a French auction house is now asking to keep my bag for 6 months while they apply for an export CITES for me (even though there’s an original H cites). I’m assuming this is the 100% safe and official route but I’m also assuming many people don’t follow it.

Again, if you weren't shipping, you would not need this. There are origin CITES and there are import/export permits.

For instance, if I want to carry one of my croc or gator bags with me from France into the United States (which I have done), I don't need any paperwork, because those are Appendix II skins and the bags are used personal effects. They don't require an import permit to the United States. (If I bring in five bags, I do need an import permit as it is now looking like commercial use.)

When I return to France, the CITES will suffice, as it shows that the original skin was exported from its origin (which for gator would be the US) to France. If I don't have a CITES, technically I need a new one.
If I go to Australia, though, and want to carry this bag in with me, it doesn't matter if I have a CITES. I still need an import permit.

Yes, I spend 5 hours on the phone today with officers from wildlife in the US and two other countries, and the permit is just valid for one time use within 6 months to one year depending on the country. According to US wildlife, they will generally just issue the export permit if you already have the import permit from the destination contry approved. It is a major hassle. Everything is a one time use, and if you do not have the permit on your name they will confiscate and destroy the bag.
Oh my gosh, I didn’t know nothing about cites, only for bags? I have several pairs of sandals, do I need that too?
