I am not sure whether I have misunderstood my SA but they have recently issued me with a document that is supposed to cover any 4 Croc items in my luggage . Has anyone else come across this type of cities because as far as I was aware you needed a cities for every item?

Also I have always found it odd that the cities that you are issued with does not specifically say what the item is so in theory you could use a cites given for one item for another assuming that they are the same type of croc.
I have always had to write on the back of mine which item they came with so that I don't get them mixed up .

Perhaps different countries have different practices.......the exotics (bags and accessories) I purchase from my local store do not come with cites (not needed I guess since they know I'm not exporting the items). But I purchased a whole bunch of exotic accessories from a store in Europe a couple of years ago and they applied for the export cites for me (took about 3 - 5 days) for no charge. The export cites have my details (name & address) and the items clearly stated on the certificate. And they issued one certificate per item. In another city in the same country, the SA's told me I didn't need the cites. I figured that they did not want to go to the trouble of getting the documentation.

The cites that I've seen for items purchased from the US show Hermes France exporting to Hermes US and the documents did not state the item, only the type of exotic skin.

Some cites that I have even cover for more than a dozen of items and some just mentioned the origin on the skin, not specifying the actual item. Some stores write at the top of the cites what the product is, some don't. Hermes :shrugs:

hi all, hoping for some input here. I placed an offer for an exotic bag (not an ostrich) in a private sale on the premise that the relevant CITES permit would be available. The bag is from the 1990s. The seller has come back to say this is not necessary because CITES permits were only around the last ten years and previously no CITES documentation were necessary. I know CITES came into effect in 1975 and some reptiles made the appendices very early; what I do not know is whether permits were really issued only in the last ten years...is this true? I am concerned because my country has signed and ratified CITES and unlike ostrich where I understand a letter of origin may be sufficient, permits are currently still issued for bags made from reptilian leather. I do not want the seller to think I am renegading on my offer but given the price I am about to pay, I do not want to take any unnecessary risks here. Any input? Thanks!!

I'm hoping I can get my confusion cleared. Different SAs in Japan have given me different answers. They seem unclear about the entire process. Thank you very much for your help.
1. When I get the Cites, is it sealed and only to be opened by Custom at the airport of departure?
2. Does Custom then complete some fields on the form or stamp it etc?
3. Do they need the original receipt?
4. Is Cites the same as Certificate of Origin? I bought a croc birkin in Tokyo and asked for both Cites and COO. The store said NO, only Cites would be issued.
Thank you soooooo much!

Not true. Permits were not just issued in the last 10 years. I bought a black bear skin rug 24 years ago and had to jump through hoops to get it back to England from Canada. It was confiscated by Customs and I eventually got a CITES permit for it a few weeks later.
I can't speak of specific skin requirements for your country but as far as CITES certificates, I know for sure that your seller is wrong in regards.

Re your 1st question, CITES is only required at IMPORT port, not export.

I purchased a croc bag at my local boutique a few years back and saw the CITES certificate in the box but when I got home the certificate was gone. When I called the store I was told by the SA that sold it to me that they didn't know what it was so took it out but still had it in their possession and would send it to me if I wanted it.

Not everyone knows what this is, we all had to learn a first time. Also, I have a collection of these sheets and honestly feel you could mix or match them because not all of them are really clear about the item they're describing.

I find it irritating that the SAs don't have clear knowledge about Cites, especially after we have spent quite a fortune, don't we expect the H buying experience to be a smooth one?
