I would like to argue that newer bags today cost over $2000 easily and the quality of 20 year old bags are way better. So for $1700 if it's in very good condition or better is a bargain. :biggrin:

And vintage is somewhat of a flex these days.
Neither one I mentioned was “very good or better”

I’m referring to used bags, obviously worn with missing parts. Not to mention it was black - not exactly a rarity or considered a collectible color.

There’s an Emerald First in the Finds from the same season that I’d argue is more collectible than a black first, thats almost half that price & been around for months. Doesn’t make sense to me.

I dunno, there are some oldie black bags that I would consider desirable, but I do get your point. A lot of people are just posting stupid prices on some of their bags that aren't in good shape.

You also mentioned this though-
"Sorry, but thats nuts
I suppose if you have money to burn, but if you didn't pay $1700 for it 20 years ago why on earth would you spend $1700 on it today?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I took that as a generalization not on a specific condition but to Protein's point maybe this person didn't have the funds in their 20s and now has disposable income. In the end, I would agree with you that I wouldn't spend $1000+ on a questionable bag from TRR not knowing the year of the bag. But for someone who is knowledgeable and decides to sell their 20 year old bags in very good condition or better, I wouldn't think $2000+ asking price is nuts at all. Some of these bags are very rare depending on the color and hard to find in very good condition and thus would command a higher price tag. You do not need 10 people who can afford the bag, you only need 1.
I was referring to the Black First with no mirror & unshown wear
If you didn’t pay $1700 for a black first 20 years ago, why would you pay that much for an obviously used one now? Black is not rare, not considered a collectible
and anyone waiting for one person isn’t really reselling their collection to fund new purchases or trying to help others find those oldies they’ve been hunting for, hoping to sell sooner rather later - they’re hoping to score big $$ waiting for that one in a million buyer & can afford to wait as long as it takes. Those are the sellers causing the prices for the average buyer to skyrocket to unaffordable places
I disagree on the black not being collectable, some black oldies certainly are. And sorry but I certainly don't believe someone selling an oldie at a higher price is driving the market.
In the case of Bal, the rise in City prices is due IMO, to the new Le City. Similarly, with Bottega Veneta, the Jodie has caused the prices of older Tomas Maier Veneta bags to skyrocket.
Thats why sites like TRR are selling heavily worn bags in Fair condition with no straps for more than $1k :no::whut:
Speaking personally?
20 years ago I was 15 years old…. So $1700 definitely wasn’t in the budget 🤣
Again you're not understanding what I wrote. Maybe this person didn't have the funds 20 years ago, or maybe they weren't into Balenciaga's 20 years ago. Maybe they're just discovering these precious oldies now. Maybe they are in love with the leather.
I disagree, there are some black Bals that are very collectible such as the black pebbled FBF 2001 which I have seen sell for $2500. Back then these bags cost $995 in 2001. Many have only discovered these bags recently thanks to the purseforum. Even authenticators today are not well versed in these bags. They are rare and I think asking double the retail price is not outrageous at all. If something is rare, it drives up the price. I've been collecting Balenciagas for a long time. I remember the days in 2006 when a Balenciaga Turquoise 2005 sold for $2000. How do I know? Because I bought and paid for it at the time. The retail price was $1245 the tag was still on it, but because it was so sought after and hard to find even then!!! The demand and pricing reflected that on the secondary market. There was even a bidding war for it. It's supply and demand determines pricing.
I agree TRR is just awful with models, year, and worth. I've only purchased bags on there that I KNOW what they are because you can't trust (often) what they say they are. That being said I found some good deals on them (up to 2 years ago), but mostly now they're overpriced for the conditional they're in for ME. I totally get someone late the bals just wanting what they want if and when they see it. I'm glad I went in early as I'm only into the oldies and couldn't keep up with the price jump these days for them.
Even now, some crazy beautiful bags sneak in for a fraction of the price … I missed two recently by naming to myself as a mantra what I already had 😂 and felt a great relief when they sold. That is VERY rare these days as opposed to only a year ago 😢. I thought it would then be a great time to sell some I really don't carry, but in my case that is not happening 🤷🏻‍♀️ (I cant sell to TRR because I am in Canada). So I am in a stagnation mode on all fronts.
Agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. Just like beauty, worth is in the eye of the beholder. There are $5000 bags circulating that I’d not want for free, and I would happily pay double the original retail price for a rare and perfect 20 year old Bal I’ve been searching for for years. To me they are pieces of Art, capable of eliciting emotion like no other possession.
Exactly my point ultimately! Our bags are better, Rarer, and superior in quality.
I surely would have paid for the 03 lilac (did it sell? ) what was asked or something close if I wasn't saving and committed to another bag. I'd have asked her to hold it for me if I thought sam would have done it and been over the moon to have it.
So did I! IT was my first collectible sought after bag and i too bought it brand new uncarried .
Had too have it, most I've ever paid for a bag. I think I've carried out twice. Pristine.
for those who don't know...That was the height of the craze when she was still dragging around that filthy Seafoam.
And I can argue it's worth more now because of condition, relative rarity, unfaded and amazing leather that will only improve with breaking In.. and I struggle to bring myself to carry it carefully.
And I don’t know what a Le dix sold for initially, but i would love to have one or a caribou (this could be redundant ,I'm not versed in these) and would pay a reasonable price that reflects its rarity. But I would need it held for me (which some sellers do if you ask nicely), and and teal, and blue jean, sometimes others if you ask if they have other bags... the price is typically what the market will bear
Yes there were a few years where the prices were absolutely insane. I paid $1600 for a beat up rose city 2004 in 2007 because it was so rare at the time.
